[ENG-SPN] Our Lady of Castro: Where Romanesque Art Holds Celtic Secrets / Nuestra Señora del Castro: Donde el Románico Guarda Secretos Celtas

We momentarily change scenery, and although we don't stray too far from that seductive Alava Plain, which holds so many surprises and unforgettable memories, we return to the north of that other island—not Barataria, of course, as was promised to that noble and humble Cervantes hero, the squire Sancho Panza, but another, pure-blooded Castilian in character and, to boot, from Burgos.

As we did so, we left behind a village named Momediano, with its small Peto de Ánimas (Body of Souls) at the side of the road, to enter a picturesque mountain, which, in the opinion of this restless adventurer, would have served perfectly as a setting for any of the great Hollywood classics dedicated to the court, adventures, and exploits of King Arthur and his famous knights. Perhaps the most notable feature is the legendary 1980s film, directed by John Boorman and titled "Excalibur."

It is true, on the other hand, that we will not find a sword stuck in the rock, but we will come across an enigmatic Romanesque hermitage, whose dedication, to Our Lady of Castro, already warns us that we are treading on Celtic land, around which the ancient Druids already collected mistletoe with their small golden sickles, centuries before Christian evangelizers, converted into "fishers of men," as a magnificent illustrated capital clearly indicates, entered these lands, erecting this temple on that very spot, where other altars once evoked long-forgotten deities.

Cambiamos momentáneamente de escenario y aunque no nos alejamos en exceso de esa seductora Llanada Alavesa, que tantas sorpresas e inolvidables recuerdos depara, volvemos al norte de esa otra ínsula, no la de Barataria, desde luego, como se le prometió a ese héroe cervantino, noble y llano, que fue el escudero Sancho Panza, sino otra, de carácter castellano de pura raza y burgalesa, por añadidura, para más señas.

Al hacerlo, dejamos atrás un pueblo, de nombre Momediano, con su pequeño Peto de Ánimas al borde del camino, para internarnos en un pintoresco monte, que, a juicio de este inquieto aventurero, hubiera servido perfectamente de escenario para cualquiera de los grandes clásicos que Hollywood dedicó a la corte, andanzas y aventuras del rey Arturo y sus famosos caballeros, donde posiblemente destaque la mítica película de los años 80 del pasado siglo XX, que, dirigida por John Boorman, lleva por título ‘Excalibur’.

Cierto es, por otra parte, que no encontraremos una espada clavada en la roca, pero sí nos toparemos con una enigmática ermita románica, cuya advocación, de Nuestra Señora del Castro, ya nos pone sobre aviso de que pisamos tierra celta, a cuyo alrededor los antiguos druidas ya recolectaban el muérdago con sus pequeñas hoces de oro, siglos antes de que los evangelizadores cristianos, convertidos en ‘pescadores de hombres’, como bien nos indica un magnífico capitel ilustrado, penetraran en estas tierras, levantando este templo en ese preciso lugar, donde antaño otros altares evocaban a deidades hace mucho tiempo olvidadas.
