[ENG-SPN] Orbaneja: Where Water Holds Memory / Orbaneja: donde el agua guarda la memoria

Like Santillana del Mar, another of those picturesque places that remain true to their ancient isolation and seclusion, we find it in that mysterious north of Burgos, in a place called Orbaneja, located beside some fantastic natural canyons that share the spotlight with a very particular area of Cantabria, still anchored in the unfathomable enigmas of the High Middle Ages: Valderredible and the Ebro Canyons.

Situated on either side of that stream of crystalline water, which, born in the dark womb of the so-called Water Cave, descends silently to form delightful natural pools, Orbaneja also sees its tiny population multiply twentyfold every summer.

Given its characteristics, there is no doubt that this was, from the time when Roman legionaries roamed the Iberian Peninsula, another of those special places that, while not reaching the status of Roman baths, served as makeshift hospitals and resting places for armies that never ceased to take advantage of the site's suitability. Perhaps for this reason, and also motivated by the presence of pilgrims, it is believed that the Knights Templar once had a hospital in this very spot.

Como Santillana del Mar, otro de esos lugares pintorescos que permanecen fieles a su ancestral aislamiento y ostracismo, lo encontramos en ese misterioso norte de Burgos, en un lugar llamado Orbaneja, situado a la vera de unos fantásticos cañones naturales que comparten protagonismo con una zona muy particular de Cantabria, anclada todavía en los insondables enigmas altomedievales: Valderredible y los Cañones del Ebro.

Situado a uno y otro lado de ese reguero de aguas cristalinas, que, naciendo en el oscuro útero de la llamada Cueva del Agua, desciende silenciosamente hasta formar unas deliciosas piscinas naturales, también Orbaneja ve todos los veranos su reducidísima población multiplicada por veinte.

Por sus características, no cabe duda de que este fue, desde los tiempos en que los legionarios romanos pateaban la Península, otro de esos lugares especiales, que, aunque sin llegar a tener la categoría de las termas, servían de improvisados hospitales y descanso a unos ejércitos que nunca dejaron de utilizar la idoneidad del lugar. Quizás por ello y motivados también por la presencia de los peregrinos, se supone que en este mismo lugar tuvo en tiempos un hospital la Orden del Temple.
