[ENG-SPN] Orbaneja and the Canyons of Time: Following the Footsteps of the Way / Orbaneja y los Cañones del Tiempo: Tras la Huella del Camino

It is said that in these remote areas, where the impressive natural canyons of the Ebro River serve as a border between the communities of Burgos and Cantabria, also watching over the timeless, hermit-like land of Valderredible, those trackers of past religious activities—who were also knights sponsored by Saint Bernard, the Templars—had a hospital that welcomed the occasional pilgrims who, possibly coming from the nearby Cantabrian ports, reached the Castilian Plateau, undertaking that arduous stretch of the Camino de Santiago, which, to this day, also includes the arid Gothic Fields of Palencia.

It is no wonder, then, that, immersed in this astonishing world, nature, with its wisdom and eternal perseverance, has shaped fantastical environments. The traveler often encounters the unusual sight of being able to savor the mythical essence of villages that, as in the case of Orbaneja, maintain their ancient medieval facades with stubborn and proud resilience.

These facades, this local architecture, and these alleyways brimming with whispers and secrets from bygone eras, little known or unknown, along with truly breathtaking scenery, once formed an essential part of the pilgrim's visual experience. Today, they spark a sense of wonder in travelers and tourists alike, who, in a way that feels almost experimental, are immersed in a true journey back in time.

Se asegura que, en estos confines, donde los impresionantes Cañones naturales del Ebro sirven de frontera entre las comunidades de Burgos y Cantabria, velando también por esa tierra eremita, que es la atemporal Valderredible, aquellos rastreadores de actividades cultuales pasadas, que fueron también unos caballeros apadrinados por San Bernardo, los templarios, tuvieron un hospital, que acogía a los ocasionales peregrinos, que, posiblemente procedentes de los cercanos puertos del Cantábrico, accedían a la Meseta castellana, emprendiendo ese duro tramo del Camino de Santiago, que, a día de hoy, continúan siendo también los áridos Campos Góticos de Palencia.

No es de extrañar, por tanto, que, fundidos en este sorprendente mundo, la naturaleza, con su sabiduría y su eterna perseverancia han ido moldeando entornos fantásticos, el viajero se encuentre, generalmente, con la insólita visión de poder saborear la mítica esencia de unos pueblos, que, como en el caso de Orbaneja, mantienen, con obstinada y orgullosa resiliencia, su antigua fachada medieval.

Una fachada, una arquitectura autóctona y unas callejas repletas de susurros y de secretos de otros tiempos, poco o nada conocidos, que, junto a unos escenarios verdaderamente impactantes, formaban una parte esencial de la experiencia visual del peregrino y que, en la actualidad, catalizan la sorpresa de viajeros y de turistas, quienes, de alguna manera experimental, sienten estar inmersos en una verdadera regresión al pasado.
