[ENG-SPN] Oncala: Flemish Tapestries and Black Virgins / Oncala: tapices flamencos y Vírgenes Negras

Many of the Celtiberian settlements, whose fierce warriors came to the aid of Numantia when the Roman general Scipio Africanus and his legions laid siege to it, came from these enigmatic Soria Highlands, and of their ancient heritage, apart from their genes, some villages still survive that continue to proudly transmit it in the etymology of their name.Oncala, of course, is one of them.

Located on the edge of the mountain pass that also bears the same name, Oncala, like the neighboring town of San Pedro Manrique, lived in times of abundance thanks to the wealth provided by its powerful sheep farming. In the past, many of its residents were great lords of the Castilian Mesta, whose magnificent coats of arms today languish on the cracked lintels of the mansions, palaces, and manor houses they built as a testament to their wealth and power.

Furthermore, it is significant to know that the figure of a Black Virgin of the Thorn is venerated in Oncala. Her title, the Virgin of the Thorn, reminds us of other important marine figures of Soria devotion, located in strategic and important places in Soria, and whose symbolism would undoubtedly make for a delightful treatise that the specialist Jack Huynen would not shy away from. But perhaps the most relevant aspect, at least in terms of artistic richness, is to be found inside its imposing parish church, located, as the famous writer Irving Shaw would say, on the top of the hill. We can also find it just a few meters from the aforementioned figure of the Black Virgin of the Thorn, like another of those treasures, often overlooked and undersold, that are its monumental Flemish tapestries. These tapestries, significantly, are identical to those seen in the reception rooms of the Royal Palace in Madrid and, in and of themselves, constitute a monumental work of art.

Muchos de los asentamientos celtíberos, cuyos fieros guerreros acudieron en ayuda de Numancia cuando el general romano, Escipión el Africano y sus legiones le pusieron cerco, procedían de estas enigmáticas Tierras Altas sorianas y de su milenaria herencia, aparte de los genes, todavía se conservan algunos pueblos que lo continúan transmitiendo con orgullo en la etimología de su nombre. Oncala, desde luego, es uno de ellos.

Situada a la vera del puerto montañés que lleva también dicho nombre, Oncala, como la vecina población de San Pedro Manrique, vivió tiempos de abundancia con la riqueza que suponía su potente ganadería ovina, siendo en el pasado, muchos de sus vecinos, grandes señores de la Mesta castellana, cuyos soberbios blasones hoy languidecen sobre los agrietados dinteles de las casones, palacetes y casas solariegas que fueron levantando como testimonio de su riqueza y su poder.

Significativo, además, es el detalle de saber, también, que en Oncala se venera la figura de una Virgen Negra, cuya advocación, del Espino, nos recuerda a otras importantes figuras marinas de la devoción soriana, situadas en lugares estratégicos e importantes de Soria y cuyo simbolismo daría, sin duda, para hacer un delicioso tratado al que no le haría ascos el especialista, Jack Huynen. Pero, quizás, lo más relevante, al menos en cuanto a riqueza artística se refiere, ha de buscarse en el interior de su imponente iglesia parroquial, situada, como diría el famoso escritor Irving Shaw, sobre la cima de la colina y la podemos encontrar, por añadidura, a escasos metros de la mencionada figura de la Virgen Negra del Espino, como otro de esos tesoros, desestimados y mal vendidos, en no pocas ocasiones, que son sus monumentales tapices flamencos. Unos tapices, que, significativamente, son idénticos a los que se pueden apreciar en los salones de recepción del Palacio Real de Madrid y que, por sí mismos, constituyen una monumental obra de Arte.
