[ENG-SPN] Olmedo and a Knight of the Spanish Golden Age / Olmedo y un caballero del Siglo de Oro español

In the figure of that distinguished playwright of the aptly named Spanish Golden Age, Don Lope de Vega y Carpio, whose mortal remains are located in the Church of Saint Sebastian in Madrid's Litterary Quarter, we have the best chronicler—today he would undoubtedly be called Ceo—of a beloved Castilian manor called Olmedo.

If Cervantes, his contemporary and perhaps even a friend, brought the beauty of La Mancha closer through the tortuous and fantastical gaze of his knight, Don Quixote, Lope de Vega did the same with the no less interesting life of that other knight, the one from Olmedo, whose palace still exists—in fact, converted into a must-see cultural center—next to one of the city's most famous alleys (ask yourself why): Huggirls Street.

And I couldn't have chosen a better setting for a drama, where love, jealousy, envy, betrayal, and crime would be the essential ingredients for a successful thriller today—with permission from Michael Jackson and his unforgettable music video—than a city that still retains, despite everything, that special charm that makes any visitor, no matter how reluctant to give in to reverie, eventually surrender to its seduction, believing they are, undoubtedly, in another time and place.

Tenemos, en la figura de aquel insigne dramaturgo del bien llamado Siglo de Oro español, Don Lope de Vega y Carpio, cuyos restos mortales se localizan en la iglesia de San Sebastián del madrileño Barrio de las Letras, al mejor cronista -hoy se le llamaría Ceo, indiscutiblemente- de un entrañable solar castellano, llamado Olmedo.

Si Cervantes, su coetáneo y puede que hasta también amigo, acercó la belleza de la Mancha a través de la tortuosa y fantástica mirada de su caballero, Don Quijote, Lope de Vega hizo otro tanto con la no menos interesante vida de aquel otro caballero, el de Olmedo, cuyo palacio todavía existe -de hecho, reconvertido en centro cultural de ineludible visita- junto a una de las callejas -vayan preguntándose el por qué- más famosas de la ciudad: la calle de Abrazamozas.

Y no podría haber elegido mejor escenario para situar un drama, donde amor, celos, envidia, traición y crimen serían hoy en día los ingredientes imprescindibles para un exitoso thriller -con permiso de Michael Jackson y su inolvidable videoclip- que una ciudad que todavía conserva, a pesar de los pesares, ese encanto tan especial que hace que cualquier visitante, por muy renuente que sea a dejarse llevar por la ensoñación, termina por rendirse a su seducción, pensando que está, indudablemente, en otro tiempo y lugar.
