[ENG-SPN] Mezquetillas: Where El Cid and Almanzor Intersect in Legend / Mezquetillas: donde el Cid y Almanzor cruzan la leyenda

We continue through the lands of Soria, venturing once again, almost casually, into that authentic itinerary followed, for various reasons, by two antagonistic figures whose warrior destinies led them to fame, achieving immortality both in the pages of History and in those other, less prestigious, though certainly more captivating for the people, realms of legend and tradition: Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar and Al-Mansur, better known as Almanzor.

We therefore follow the path of these two great figures and approach a town that, as its very name suggests, Mezquetillas, was a medieval stronghold of Muslim Soria, which, in medieval times, dominated this area known as the Duero frontier, separating Christian Spain from Muslim Spain, which wielded its power from the Caliphate of Córdoba.

Its current apparent neglect may be misleading, as Mezquetillas still boasts an interesting cultural asset: its captivating rural architecture and a legendary history concerning its church. In the feared times of the year 1000, this church served as a small fort—hence the prominent Moorish influence on its distinctive tower—where, it is said, a dying Almanzor spent the night on his way to Medinaceli, a destination he never reached, as death overtook him along the route.

Seguimos por tierras de Soria, volviendo a introducirnos, como el que no quiere la cosa, en ese genuino itinerario, que, por diversos motivos, siguieron dos personajes antagónicos, pero cuyo destino de guerreros les llevó a encontrar la fama, alcanzando la inmortalidad, tanto en las páginas de la Historia, como en aquellas otras, con menos caché, aunque, desde luego, más seductoras para el pueblo, como son las leyendas y las tradiciones: Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar y Al-Mansur, más conocido como Almanzor.

Seguimos, por lo tanto, el camino de estos dos grandes personajes y nos acercamos a un pueblo que ya, como su mismo nombre indica, Mezquetillas, fue un bastión medieval de esa Soria musulmana, que, en tiempos medievales dominaba esta zona conocida como la frontera del Duero, que separaba la España cristiana de aquella otra España, la musulmana, que ejercía su poder desde el Califato de Córdoba.

Su aparente ostracismo actual puede resultar un detalle engañoso, pues Mezquetillas todavía cuenta con un interesante Bien Cultural, como es su interesante arquitectura rural y con una legendaria historia, referente a su iglesia, que fue, en aquellos temidos tiempos del Año Mil, un pequeño fortín -de ahí, el arabismo sobresaliente de su peculiar torre- donde se dice que pernoctó un moribundo Almanzor, camino de Medinaceli, a la que no pudo llegar, pues la muerte le sorprendió por el camino.
