There is an ancient song, from rich traditional folklore, that says that the mermaid was a beautiful woman who, due to a curse, was placed in the sea by God. In fact, and although our once powerful fishing fleet is becoming increasingly depleted, seriously threatening to disappear, it is still possible to find old sea lions, who, when you mention them, immediately cross themselves and nervously look the other way, superstitious or consciously wary. of the danger they actually represent, being the origin of the perdition of many sailors, especially in the rough waters of northern Spain, where still, after centuries, popular tradition insists on locating their habitat in the dangerous rocks. located along the entire length and width of the Cantabrian Corniche.

Given that, since ancient times, the symbolism of the mermaid has been associated with the type of femme fatale that inevitably attracts man to his doom, it is not strange that Romanesque sculpture, based on the archaic patterns of the Greek tradition represented them with the body of a bird or with a mermaid's tail, as an allusion to desires and base passions, into whose tempting nets one had to avoid falling, under penalty of losing not only one's life, but also one's soul. But, given her singular beauty and the irresistibleness of her singing, what man could, really, resist her charm?

Hay una antiquísima canción, procedente del rico folklore tradicional, que dice que la sirena era una hermosa mujer que por una maldición la puso Dios en el mar. De hecho y aunque cada vez nuestra antaño poderosa flota pesquera está cada día más mermada, amenazando seriamente con desaparecer, todavía es posible encontrar viejos lobos marinos, que, cuando las mencionas, inmediatamente se santiguan y miran nerviosos para otro lado, supersticiosa o conscientemente prevenidos del peligro que representan en realidad, siendo el origen de la perdición de muchos marinos, sobre todo, en las bravas aguas del norte de España, donde todavía, al cabo de los siglos, la tradición popular insiste en situar su hábitat en los peligrosos peñascos situado a todo lo largo y ancho de la Cornisa Cantábrica.

Dado, que, desde la más remota Antigüedad, el simbolismo de la sirena ha estado asociado al tipo de mujer fatal que atrae irremisiblemente al hombre a su perdición, no es raro que también la escultura románica, basándose en los arcaicos patrones de la tradición greco-romana, las representara con cuerpo de ave o con cola de sirena, como alusión a los deseos y las bajas pasiones, en cuyas tentadoras redes había que evitar caer, so pena de perder no sólo la vida, sino también el alma. Pero, dada su singular belleza y lo irresistible de su canto, ¿qué hombre podría, realmente, resistirse a su encanto?.
