[ENG-SPN] Melque: A Beautiful Enigma Out of Time / Melque: un bello enigma fuera del tiempo

Aside from recommending its visit as one of those thousand must-see places in Spain at least once in a lifetime, the writer Juan Eslava Galán adds, and he's certainly right, which is why I can't take a single comma away from it, that this enigmatic Mozarabic-Visigothic church of Saint Mary of Melque, which we now have the opportunity to see before our astonished eyes, is a beautiful enigma out of time.

Time, on the other hand, is necessary if we want to immerse ourselves in the subtleties of one of the most mysterious and "magical" environments in this remarkable area of ancient Toledo, which, close to the prominent mountains that also bear its name, that is, Toledo, still preserves some of the most evocative and enigmatic places, where both official history and "bandit history," that of legends, encourage every adventure seeker to leave behind their objective prejudices and allow themselves to be carried away by the turbulent rivers of speculation.

A land of antediluvian dolmens, of incredible archaeological discoveries, much of whose evidence was, for centuries, hidden by speculation, of mysterious Black Virgins, and of the presence, by no means coincidental, of that cunning religious-military order that had a habit of settling in places marked by the most ancient traditions, the Order of the Temple. This place, this truncated church, which, at one time, was one of the most important monasteries of worship in Spain, is just the tip of an iceberg of mystery, capable of seducing the imagination to boundless heights, without ever fully revealing its most ancient mysteries.

Aparte de recomendar su visita, como uno de esos mil lugares imprescindibles que ver en España al menos una vez en la vida, añade el escritor, Juan Eslava Galán y desde luego, no le falta razón, motivo por el que no le quito ni una coma, que esta enigmática iglesia, mozárabe-visigoda, de Santa María de Melque, que ahora tenemos la oportunidad de tener frente a nuestra sorprendida visión, es un bello enigma fuera del tiempo.

Tiempo, por otra parte, que hace falta que nos tomemos, si queremos impregnarnos de las sutilezas de uno de los entornos más misteriosos y ‘mágicos’ de esta notable zona de ese Toledo ancestral, que, cercana a los prominentes Montes que llevan también su nombre, es decir, de Toledo, conserva, todavía, algunos de los lugares más sugerentes y enigmáticos, donde, tanto la Historia oficial, como la ‘Historia bandolera’, la de las leyendas, alientan, a todo buscador de la aventura, a dejar atrás sus prejuicios objetivos y dejarse llevar por los revueltos ríos de la especulación.

Zona de dólmenes antediluvianos, de increíbles descubrimientos arqueológicos, muchos de cuyos testimonios fueron, durante siglos, escamoteados por la especulación, de misteriosas Vírgenes Negras y de la presencia, para nada casual, de esa astuta orden religioso-militar que tenía por costumbre instalarse en los lugares señalados por las más ancestrales tradiciones, la Orden del Temple, este lugar, esta desmochada iglesia, que, en su momento, fue uno de los monasterios de culto más importantes de España, es tan sólo la punta de un iceberg del misterio, capaz de seducir la imaginación hasta cotas desmesuradas, sin terminar nunca de confiar del todo sus más ancestrales misterios.
