[ENG-SPN] Lebeña: The Sanctuary that Defies the Centuries / Lebeña: El Santuario que Desafía los Siglos

Time passes, with its inexorable march, but when you stand before it, the centuries seem to barely touch its ancient architecture. The Church of Santa María de Lebeña, as eternal in appearance as the Picos de Europa mountains that watch over it with the fraternal affection of an old nurse, also guards its age-old secrets.

The valley that shelters it, beyond the most harrowing part of the La Hermida gorge, whose Achilles' heel is the waters of the Deva River in its joyful descent to the Cantabrian Sea, is as fertile as the breast offered to the hungry mouth of the Christ Child by the venerated image of the Virgin.

We are standing before one of the oldest and most significant sanctuaries on one of the most challenging pilgrimage routes in Spain: the Camino Lebanensis, or Way of Liébana. And this ancient 9th-century church remains what it always was: a light in the darkness and a wellspring of knowledge for all who learn to see with the eyes of the spirit.

El tiempo pasa, con su inexorable transcurrir, pero cuando la tienes enfrente, parece que los siglos apenas resbalan por su ancestral arquitectura. La iglesia de Santa María de Lebeña, tan eterna, en apariencia, como esos Picos de Europa que la guardan con el fraternal cariño de una vieja nodriza, custodian también sus milenarios secretos.

El valle que la cobija, pasada la parte más desgarradora del desfiladero de La Hermida, cuyo talón de Aquiles son las aguas del río Deva en su alegre descenso hasta el mar Cantábrico, es tan fértil como el pecho que ofrece a la hambrienta boca del Niño la venerada imagen de la Virgen titular.

Estamos frente a uno de los santuarios más antiguos y significativos de uno de los caminos de peregrinación más duros de España: el Camino Lebanensis o Camino de la Liébana. Y esta arcana iglesia del siglo IX, continúa siendo la que siempre fue: una luz en las tinieblas y un pozo de conocimiento para todo aquel que aprenda a mirar con los ojos del espíritu.
