[ENG-SPN] La Galea: The Sentinel of the Cantabrian Sea / La Galea: el centinela del Cantábrico

Along this 41-kilometer stretch of coastline between the charismatic towns of Getxo and Bakio, some remnants of those old forts still remain. Even back in the time when the ill-fated poet José de Espronceda immortalized the pirate's song, these forts watched over these shores, where today surfers brave the Cantabrian waves, without the need for the hundred cannons per side and the full wind at their backs that accompanied the feared buccaneer.

Beyond the windmills of Las Arenas—giants that Don Quixote never knew, but which, had he seen them, he would not have hesitated to confront—we have one of the best-preserved examples, although its history includes a time when the ruthless filibustering that characterized Napoleon's armies nearly reduced it to ashes, as he did with many other places throughout Spain, employing the old Russian scorched-earth policy.

This is the fort known as La Galea, whose silent walls, covered not only in persistent ivy but also in echoes and ghosts of the past, continue to witness the passage of time. And like the protagonist of a well-known novel by the Italian writer Dino Buzzati, titled "The Tartar Steppe," from its languid battlements, furiously buffeted by the north wind, the enemy is still not visible in the distance.

En esa franja costera que se extiende a lo largo de 41 kilómetros entre las carismáticas poblaciones de Getxo y Bakio, quedan todavía algunos testimonios de esos viejos fortines, que aún por la época en la que el malogrado poeta, José de Espronceda, inmortalizaba la canción del pirata, vigilaban estas costas, donde hoy los surfistas desafían las olas del Cantábrico, sin necesidad de esos cien cañones por banda y el viento en popa a toda vela que acompañaban al temido filibustero.

Tenemos, algo más allá de unos molinos de viento de Las Arenas -gigantes que no llegó a conocer Don Quijote, pero, que, de haberlo hecho, no hubiera dudado en enfrentar- uno de los ejemplos mejor conservados, aunque en su historia hubiera un tiempo en el que el filibusterismo despiadado que caracterizó a los ejércitos de Napoleón, estuviera a punto de reducirlo a cenizas, como hizo con otros muchos lugares a lo largo y ancho de España, practicando la vieja técnica rusa de la tierra quemada.

Se trata del fuerte conocido con el nombre de La Galea, cuyos silenciosos muros, repletos, no sólo de persistente hiedra, sino también de ecos y de fantasmas del pasado, continúan viendo el tiempo pasar y al igual que el protagonista de una conocida novela del escritor italiano, Dino Buzzatti, titulada ‘El desierto de los tártaros’, desde sus lánguidas almenas, furiosamente agitadas por el viento del norte, todavía no se ve, en lontananza, al enemigo pasar.
