[ENG-SPN] Hita: The Secret Alcarria Where the Archpriest Still Sings / Hita: la Alcarria secreta donde aún canta el Arcipreste

Although everyone talks about the Alcarria, but no one actually goes there, as that dilettante of lexicon, who was, in essence, Camilo José Cela, once said, the truth is that to speak of the Alcarria without strolling through one of its most historic and emblematic towns would be like speaking of the adventures of Sinbad the Sailor without considering the sea.

Hita, like Torija or Brihuega, is another of the important capitals of the Alcarria and a place where, guided by its famous Archpriest, Juan Ruiz—a figure who, after all, inevitably reminds us of that other thunderbolt dressed as a Nazarene, who, according to Antonio Machado, was the Andalusian knight, Don Guido—we can discover the birthplace of a minstrel tradition that, despite its roguishness, is nonetheless interesting and, of course, another of the great jewels of world literature.

Because here in Hita, behind walls of which only scant remains exist, the monumental Santa María Gate standing out, the wayward Archpriest, with the help of fictional characters who nonetheless became part of popular merriment, such as Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma, recorded his own Don Juanesque biography in a text that, in the past, along with other jewels of our rich heritage, such as the Poem of the Cid or Jorge Manrique's Stanzas on the Death of His Father, formed part of the cultural education of all generations in this country: The Book of Good Love.

A pesar de que todo el mundo hable de la Alcarria, pero nadie, en realidad, vaya a la Alcarria, como decía aquel diletante del léxico, que, en el fondo, fue Camilo José Cela, lo cierto es que hablar de la Alcarria, sin pasear por una de sus villas más históricas y emblemáticas, sería como hablar de las aventuras de Simbad el marino, sin tener en cuenta el mar.

Hita, como Torija o como Brihuega, es otra de las relevantes capitalidades de la Alcarria y lugar donde, de la mano de su famoso Arcipreste, Juan Ruiz, personaje, que, después de todo, no deja de recordarnos a ese otro trueno vestido de Nazareno, que, según Antonio Machado, fue el caballero andaluz, Don Guido, descubrir el solar donde naciera parte de una juglaría, que no por picaresca, ha de resultar interesante y por supuesto, otra de las grandes joyas de la Literatura universal.

Porque aquí en Hita, detrás de unas murallas de las que apenas quedan restos, destacando la monumental Puerta de Santa María, el díscolo Arcipreste, de la mano de personajes ficticios pero que se quedaron en el elenco de la alegría popular, como Don Carnal y Doña Cuaresma, dejó constancia de su propia biografía donjuanesca, en un texto, que, en el pasado, junto a otras joyas de nuestro rico legado, como el Poema de Mío Cid o las Coplas a la muerte de su padre, de Jorge Manrique, formaron parte de la enseñanza cultural de todas las generaciones de este país: El Libro de Buen Amor.
