Templars -by the way, great promoters and financiers of the construction of cathedrals- who, in addition to abandoning the rigid enthronement that characterized their Romanesque origins, shows an appreciable complicity between the figures of the Mother and the Son that she holds in her arms, which breaks the mold in favor of something eminently essential, such as the love of a mother for her child and, in addition, love for the family: the White Virgin.

Una de las características que diferencia a la escultura gótica de su inmediato precedente, la escultura románica, es, que, frente a la severidad de ésta, donde el hieratismo suele ser una constante, la expresividad del gótico se humaniza, sin que por ello, no obstante, deje de encerrar, en ocasiones, enigmas tan inquietantes, como aquellos otros, que, por ejemplo, caracterizan la famosa sonrisa de la Gioconda de Leonardo Da Vinci, cuyo fascinante misterio, continúa siendo todo un hándicap para los historiadores modernos, generando no pocos debates de índole psicológica, que, en su momento, también llamaron la atención de personajes relevantes en este ámbito, como el propio Sigmund Freud y C.G. Jung.

Si bien, es cierto que existen algunos precedentes en la escultura románica, como la famosa sonrisa de Daniel, esculpido por el Maestro Mateo en la portada principal de la catedral de Santiago de Compostela, uno de los ejemplos más evidentes y posiblemente, más cercanos, además, a la fidelidad de los parroquianos, dentro del conjunto escultural gótico y referido a no pocas catedrales españolas -como las de León, Palencia y Toledo- lo tenemos en esa figura, introducida, principalmente por los cistercienses y su brazo armado, los caballeros templarios -por cierto, grandes promotores y financiadores de la construcción de catedrales- que, además de abandonar la rígida entronización que caracterizaba a sus procedentes románicos, muestra una apreciable complicidad entre las figuras de la Madre y del Hijo que ésta sostiene en sus brazos, la cual, rompe moldes en favor de algo eminentemente esencial, como es el amor de una madre por su hijo y por añadidura, el amor a la familia: la Virgen Blanca.
