[ENG-SPN] From Numancia to Tera: A Journey to the Heart of the Unfathomable / De Numancia a Tera: Viaje al Corazón de lo Insondable

DSCN1326.JPG

Leaving the city of Soria on the N111 highway and passing by mysterious paths, often shrouded in persistent fogs that frequently obscure the full splendor of charismatic villages like Garray, where the solitary ruins of Numancia, a testament to history, still stand—the very ruins the famous hermit of San Saturio, an unforgettable figure immortalized by the writer José Antonio Gaya Nuño, loved to climb when the wind blows—the traveler reaches a truly strange place, where the depths of history are so unfathomable that they are inextricably intertwined with legends: Tera.

It has been said that an ancient monastery, Santa María, once stood near Tera. Its exact location has never been discovered, but some carved stones, apparently of pre-Romanesque origin, seem to have survived. Many years ago—so many that even the locals can't remember—these stones were reused in the facades of some of the town's important houses. Among them were some crosses, which, judging by their appearance, could well have been Visigothic in origin.
But in Tera—and here lies another added enigma—there also appears to have been a significant presence of Neolithic architectural remains, such as dolmens and menhirs.

These suffered a similar fate to the vanished Christian monastery, leaving traces within the old Romanesque church. However, the church was grossly altered over time and with changing fashions, to the point that part of an ancient menhir can still be seen embedded in one of the side walls. As Thomas à Kempis said, and as the title of the first poem published by the American poet Emily Dickinson: ‘sic transit gloria mundi’. Thus passes the glory of the world.
