[ENG-SPN] Fields of Castile / Campos de Castilla

The surrounding fields have already received the first attention from the farmer's barber's knife, and in the distance, on that same horizon line where heaven and earth seem to merge in a fraternal embrace, the thoughtful traveler wishes he could be reincarnated beneath Don Quixote's rusty basin and noble-mindedly attack those fierce giants, which, even worse than the La Mancha giants, in this case, are the windmills.

The town's streets, authentic and without paying homage to the burdensome hostility of the asphalt, remind him, on the other hand, of that other fork in the road, which, as Borges rightly guessed, ends, one way or another, leading any daring soul into an unexpected and dark labyrinth.

The church bells, barely sheltered in the shadow of the Baroque tower, pay homage to the silence, perhaps so as not to awaken—and the traveler shudders just thinking about it—the terrible Minotaur of depopulation, who watches over, from his archetypal reality, the now darkened fields of Castile.

Los campos alrededor ya han recibido las primeras atenciones del tajo barbero del agricultor y en la distancia, en esa misma línea del horizonte donde el cielo y la tierra parecen fundirse en un fraternal abrazo, el viajero, meditabundo, desearía reencarnar bajo la jofaina oxidada de Don Quijote y acometer con hidalguía a esos fieros gigantes, que, aun peor que los manchegos, en este caso, son los molinos eólicos.

Las calles del pueblo, auténticas y sin rendir pleitesía a la gravosa hostilidad del asfalto, le recuerdan, por otra parte, a esa otra bifurcación de caminos, que, como bien suponía Borges, terminan, de una u otra manera, conduciendo a cualquier atrevido a un inesperado y oscuro laberinto.

Las campanas de la iglesia, apenas cobijadas a la sombra de la torre barroca, rinden homenaje al silencio, quizás para no despertar y el viajero se estremece sólo de pensarlo, al terrible Minotauro de la despoblación, que vigila, desde su realidad arquetípica, los ahora ensombrecidos campos de Castilla.
