[ENG-SPN] Churches and Legends: Saint Michael of Palencia / Iglesias y leyendas: San Miguel de Palencia

If in the humble church of Saint James of the Knights, nestled outside the medieval walls of Zamora, on one of the banks of the Duero, it is claimed that Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, the famous warrior known as El Cid Campeador, was knighted, in Palencia they are convinced that in this curious church, also located near the banks of another river, the Carrión, and dedicated to the figure of Saint Michael, his betrothal to the irascible lady, Doña Jimena, was celebrated.

Although it is true that, in both cases, there is no historical documentation to support this, it is generally true, however, that when the river of tradition sounds, it carries at least some historical water, as an old popular saying wisely states.

On the other hand, historical, although unrelated to the vibrant figure of El Cid Campeador, were undoubtedly the devastating effects of the brutal Lisbon earthquake, an event that occurred in 1755. It affected numerous locations in Spain, including the capital of Palencia, and forced, in the case of this unique temple, the consolidation and possibly alteration of, among other elements, a tower, which, nevertheless, as appreciated by its monumentality and beauty, is striking, even from a distance.

Si en la humilde iglesia de Santiago de los Caballeros, enclavada extramuros de las murallas medievales de Zamora, en una de las riberas del Duero, se afirma que fue armado caballero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, el célebre guerrero conocido como el Cid Campeador, en Palencia están convencidos de que, en esta curiosa iglesia, situada también en las inmediaciones de la ribera de otro río, el Carrión y dedicada a la figura de San Miguel, se celebraron sus esponsales con la irascible dama, Doña Jimena.

Aunque es cierto, que, tanto en uno como en otro caso, no existe documentación histórica que lo avale, suele ser cierto, sin embargo, que cuando el río de la tradición suena es que al menos algo de agua histórica lleva, como afirma sabiamente un viejo refrán popular.

Por otra parte, históricos, aunque ajenos a la vibrante figura del Cid Campeador, fueron, sin ninguna duda, los devastadores efectos del brutal terremoto de Lisboa, acontecimiento acaecido en el año 1755, que, afectando a numerosos lugares de España, incluida la capital palentina, obligaron, en el caso de este singular templo, a consolidar y posiblemente a alterar, entre otros elementos, una torre, que, no obstante y según se aprecia por su monumentalidad y belleza, llama poderosamente la atención, incluso a la distancia.
