[ENG-SPN] Castile, Mystery, and Exile: The Hidden Journey of El Cid / Castilla, Misterio y Destierro: El Viaje Oculto del Cid
The world of legend also boasts that Hispanic hybrid, strong as Hercules, furious as Achilles, and cunning as Ulysses: that entirely historical figure who, born Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, is nevertheless better known by the powerful title of El Cid Campeador.
If it is said that Hercules, among countless other feats, confronted the Hydra of Lerma—curious, but worth remembering that in the heart of Castile there is a stately town, rich in Baroque architecture, bearing that name, whose station, for further reference, is a mandatory stop for buses traveling to and from Northern Spain—our Campeador, the intrepid Rodrigo, also faced a younger sister, but certainly just as monstrous: the fearsome serpent of Tiermes, known by the curious name of Elpha.
And he did so, moreover, on his way into exile, a journey filled with brilliant anecdotes and rich, above all, in adventures, which led him through these desolate landscapes. Set against the backdrop of the unique Sierra de Pela mountain range, with its magnificent peaks like Santo Alto Rey, this area forms a nerve center of mystery, where the borders of three distinct regions converge, all well worth exploring: Soria, Segovia, and Guadalajara.
El mundo de la leyenda cuenta también con ese híbrido hispano, fuerte como Hércules, furioso como Aquiles y astuto como Ulises, que fue ese personaje, cien por cien histórico, que, nacido bajo el nombre de Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, es más conocido, no obstante, por el potente apelativo de el Cid Campeador.
Si se dice que Hércules, entre otras innumerables hazañas, se enfrentó con la hidra de Lerma –curioso, pero es bueno recordar que, en el corazón de Castilla, existe una villa señorial, rica en arquitectura barroca, con dicho nombre, en cuya estación, para más referencias, suelen hacer parada obligatoria los autobuses que vienen y van al Norte de España- nuestro Campeador, el intrépido Rodrigo, también lo hizo con una hermana menor, pero, ciertamente, igual de monstruosa: el temible serpentón de Tiermes, conocido con el curioso nombre de Elpha.
Y lo hizo, además, camino de un destierro, repleto de brillantes anécdotas y rico, sobre todo, en aventuras, que le hizo pasar por estos desolados parajes, que, teniendo como telón de fondo la singular Sierra de Pela, con montes soberbios, como el del Santo Alto Rey, constituye un punto neurálgico del misterio, en el que confluyen las fronteras de tres singulares comunidades, que merece la pena conocer: Soria, Segovia y Guadalajara.
