[ENG-SPN] Bolmir: The Hidden Side of Romanesque Art / Bolmir: el lado oculto del románico

The erotic imagery that characterizes the themes of many corbels in this church in Bolmir also suggests, in its design, that the stonemasons who worked here and continued their journey towards Campoo and the Gothic plains of Palencia were most likely the same ones who bequeathed to a posterity that does not always appreciate them for what they are worth and, in fact, barely understands their hidden message, that other sacred site where Eros and Psyche continue to attract each other with magnetic intensity through the centuries: the Collegiate Church of San Pedro de Cervatos.

However, unlike the latter, the Romanesque church of Bolmir, dedicated to Saint Cyprian, reveals a fascinating world of beliefs and superstitions, where shadowy presences such as witches and demons lurk—supernatural beings that, however much we may find them incredulous today, were part of the everyday imagination of the medieval world.

In fact, many modern occultists continue to draw from medieval sources, which, in this sense, include both the Book of Saint Cyprian and the famous Keys of Solomon. And regarding witchcraft, we must not forget that it remains very much present in nearby places, such as Elines, where Cantabria is proud to have one of its four privileged Collegiate Churches: the Church of San Martín.

La parafernalia erótica que caracteriza la temática de muchos canecillos de esta iglesia de Bolmir, denota también, en su traza, que, con toda probabilidad los canteros que laboraron aquí y continuaron su camino hacia Campoo y los mesetarios Campos Góticos de Palencia, fueron los mismos que legaron a una posteridad que no siempre los estima en lo que valen y que, de hecho, apenas comprende su oculto mensaje, ese otro conjunto sagrado donde Eros y Psique continúan atrayéndose con magnética intensidad al cabo de los siglos: la Colegiata de San Pedro de Cervatos.

No obstante, a diferencia de ésta, la iglesia románica de Bolmir, por su advocación a San Cipriano, vuelve a poner de manifiesto, además, todo un fascinante mundo de creencias y superstición, en el que se ocultan tenebrosas presencias, como las brujas y los demonios, seres sobrenaturales, que, por mucha incredulidad que nos produzcan actualmente, formaban parte del imaginario cotidiano del universo medieval.

De hecho, muchos ocultistas modernos continúan bebiendo de las fuentes medievales, que, en este sentido, representan tanto ‘El Libro de San Cipriano’, como las famosas ‘Clavículas de Salomón’. Y en cuanto a la brujería se refiere, no hemos de olvidar, que todavía se mantiene muy presente en lugares cercanos, como Elines, donde Cantabria se siente orgullosa de tener una de sus privilegiadas cuatro Colegiatas: la de San Martín.
