[ENG-SPN] Atienza: Where Faith and the Wind Carve the Mystery / Atienza: Allí Donde la Fe y el Viento Tallan el Misterio

Like a metaphor for life, at the end of the Stations of the Cross in Atienza, the cemetery awaits us, and also that metaphorical paradise that has always been, for the pilgrim, a church, Santa María, whose construction also bears the mark of Muslim master builders, who included, on one of its portals, a prayer to Allah.

Above both, its foundations anchored on a rocky promontory, the castle of Atienza, a solitary bastion of the Castilian steppes, shelters its own ghosts in the silence of centuries, which, nevertheless, always leave in the mind the feeling that they were preludes to later storms.

Now a cemetery church, the wind, which relentlessly batters it from all sides, has altered the story of that Porta Speciosa, once its illuminated portal, transforming it into an enigma difficult to solve. It brings to the traveler's mind that enigmatic phrase by the American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft, albeit adapted to the circumstances: in this place, even stone can die.

Como una metáfora de la vida, al final del Vía Crucis de Atienza nos espera el cementerio y también, ese metafórico paraíso que fue siempre, para el peregrino, una iglesia, la de Santa María, en cuya elaboración dejaron también su impronta manos de alarifes musulmanes, que incluyeron, en una de sus portadas, una plegaria a Alá.

Por encima de ambos, anclados sus cimientos sobre un promontorio rocoso, el castillo de Atienza, baluarte solitario de las estepas castellanas, cobija a sus propios fantasmas en el silencio de unos siglos, que, sin embargo, siempre dejan en el ánimo la sensación de que fueron preludios de posteriores tormentas.

Convertida en iglesia cementerial, el viento, que la bate sin piedad por los cuatros costados, ha modificado el relato de esa Porta Speciosa, que un día fue su iluminada portada, hasta convertirlo en un enigma de difícil solución, que trae a la mente del viajero aquella enigmática frase del escritor norteamericano, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, si bien, amoldada a las circunstancias: en este lugar, hasta la piedra puede morir.
