[ENG-SPN] Aldehuela de Sepúlveda: Where the Forest Opens the Door to Time / Aldehuela de Sepúlveda: Donde el Bosque Abre la Puerta al Tiempo

To reach the church of Saint Stephen, the traveler must venture along a beautiful country lane, flanked by poplars, aspens, oaks, and perhaps even a chestnut tree. With each soft rustle of the carpet of fallen leaves that clings to their weathered boots, fueled by the dew, they feel as if they are traversing the peaceful paths of Tolkien's Shire. Yet, they know full well that, far from being in that idyllic corner of Middle-earth, they have just set foot in a village that is, at the very least, equally peaceful and quiet: Aldehuela de Sepúlveda.

He knows he can't get lost, for even the trees maintain their distance, always leaving the old Romanesque architecture visible. It's reached after rounding a sharp bend, as the poet Antonio Machado would say, and it has stood there, witnessing, like countless generations of residents, the passage of time, the arrival of new fashions, and the modification of a structure that was born a perfect sounding board.

Dedicated to the figure of the most famous stoned man in history, Saint Stephen, even the porticoed gallery has been completely altered and barely retains a trace of the original capitals. Their rough, foliate representations, however, once again reveal—leaving aside their underlying symbolism—the profound knowledge of the plant world they possessed at that time. Or, to put it another way: a profound understanding of an environment that was presumably also irrevocably affected by that metaphorical Attila's horse, which, of course, is always time and its allies, even more ferocious than erosion itself: humankind.

Para llegar a la iglesia de San Esteban, el viajero ha de adentrarse por un hermoso caminillo rural, que, escoltado a ambos por álamos, chopos, robles y quizás algún castaño también, le hacen sentir, con cada leve crujido de la alfombra de hojarasca que a consecuencia del rocío se adhiere con saña sus curtidas botas, que está atravesando los senderos apacibles de la Comarca de Tolkien, aunque sabe bien, que, lejos de hallarse en ese idílico lugar de la Tierra Media, acaba de poner los pies, cuando menos, en un pueblo igual de apacible y silencioso además: Aldehuela de Sepúlveda.

Sabe que no tiene pérdida, pues incluso el arbolado mantiene su distancia, dejando siempre a la vista la vieja arquitectura románica, que se alcanza después de dejar atrás una curva de ballesta, como diría el poeta Antonio Machado y que lleva allí, viendo, como las incontables generaciones de vecinos, el tiempo pasar, las nuevas modas llegar y modificar una estructura que nació siendo una perfecta caja de resonancia.

Dedicada a la figura del lapidado más famoso de la Historia, San Esteban, incluso la galería porticada se ha visto alterada por completo y apenas conserva rastro de los capiteles originales, cuyas toscas representaciones foliáceas, vuelven a poner, no obstante, de manifiesto y dejando su soterrado simbolismo a un lado, el gran conocimiento del mundo vegetal que tenían en esa época. O lo que viene a ser lo mismo: el gran conocimiento de un entorno, que es de suponer que también se vio irremediablemente afectado por ese metafórico caballo de Atila, que, desde luego, es siempre el tiempo y sus aliados más feroces aún que la propia erosión: los hombres.
