Hello Hive friends. Wellcome to My blog. One of the fondest memories I have of my childhood is not the visits to my maternal grandparents' house. I believe that there was born one of the great passions that have occupied my time: orchids. Although lately I have not been able to dedicate the time that this type of plants requires, I still find it pleasant to take care of them.

I came to have about 30 species. This is not such a high number compared to collectors I know but for me it became a considerable number. I collected them in different ways.
Some I found on my trips to the countryside, others were given to me as gifts, some were the product of exchanges.

For work reasons it was practically impossible for me to attend to them. This soon began to show in my collection and I decided to give them to someone who could give them the treatment they need. When I saw them in such conditions I decided to give them as a gift to my aunt. If passion has always been the plants. That is why I made the decision. She could take care of them as I was not.

It was during a week off from work. After creating space for them in different parts of the yard, I decided to do a treatment that I hadn't given them for a long time. Normally I dissolved contraceptive pills in water and watered the plants with that mixture. At that time I didn't have those tablets but I did have worm humus. I had used this organic fertilizer before with good results as well.

Creating the conditions also meant preparing some pots to put several of them in. Most of the specimens were epiphytes but there were not enough trees to put them in. I decided to make a mixture of mud brick powder and charcoal powder. With that I filled several pots and placed some plants in them.

Collecting orchids is pleasurable not only because of the beauty and exoticness of the plants and especially their flowers. This type of plant requires great care. They can be attacked by fungi, by drought when they are not placed in places that protect them from the sun.

I must say that the last attention I paid to them was very relaxing. I relived the reason why I started this hobby. I felt great satisfaction at the end of that work, with the added bonus of having given happiness to my aunt with that act.

Whenever I go back there I like to spend some time contemplating them, checking them, etc. Lately they have been blooming a bit out of season. I suppose it is due to the effect of the very unstable weather of the last few years. Even so, the beauty of their blooms is an incredible spectacle.

Among all the varieties I have had, the one I find most beautiful is a species native to my province: the Broughtonia cubensis. It has a mixture of delicacy and extraordinary beauty.

It is not easy for me to grow orchids but I am trying, although I have had them for more than a year and I have not seen them bloom yet, it is hard for me to keep their leaves well hydrated. Maybe it is that I have not been able to find a good location or maybe the high temperature in my area does not help. Yours look beautiful. Congratulations @jrobe

Hello. How good to know that we share this passion. Some varieties are delicate. It is not known in your specific case if this tip would work. I have a friend who prepares plastic bottles.
He made a hole in the lids and placed a hose used in hospitals to place IVs to patients. They have a wheel to regulate the amount of serum that goes down into the patient's vein. In his case he kept his orchids hydrated like this. He regulated the amount of water in this way, placing the bottles in a place higher than the plant.
Thanks for the visit.
