I use airbnb, but you can look at facebook sublease groups, it’d be much cheaper to take over someone’s lease if u plan to stay longer. I always use google lens to translate, locals appreciate if your effort to translate even when u don’t speak local language. I’ve never been to Bali but there’re plenty of Westerners there without speaking a word of Bahasa, they seem fine. I enjoyed Hanoi Bangkok and KL, maybe take a short trip some cities in SE Asia first and decide which one suits you the most? In KL and Phillipines a lot of locals speak good English.
