Phone Photography Contest - #129: A Record of an Ecocide (Eng – Esp)

Several days ago, an atrocious act of ecocide was committed in my city (Cumaná, Venezuela), when, without consultation and in an almost barbaric manner, trees that were 40 years old or older were cut down in a historic square (Plaza José María Vargas), and the square itself was destroyed. This is perhaps the culmination of a certain pattern of government behavior (at both the municipal and state levels) that has been taking place for some time, involving the removal of mature trees (not necessarily diseased) from various parts of the city and the replacement of soil and green spaces with concrete slabs.

Cumaná has become a generally hot city, especially in recent decades; this was not the case in the past, when, for example, the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt noted the area’s cool climate. The presence of many squares and parks with abundant vegetation has characterized the area’s architecture and biodiversity. But irresponsible actions such as the one reported here contribute to the consequences of climate change.

Registro de un ecocidio

Hace varios días se perpetró en mi ciudad (Cumaná, Venezuela) un atroz ecocidio, cuando de modo inconsulto y casi bárbaro, fueron talados árboles de 40 o más años de una plaza histórica (Plaza José María Vargas), a la vez que este espacio fue destruido. Este es quizás el punto más alto de cierta conducta gubernamental (municipal y estadal) que se viene poniendo en práctica desde hace algún tiempo, al eliminar árboles añejos (no necesariamente enfermos) de diferentes lugares de la ciudad, y sustituir la tierra y zonas verdes con placas de cemento.

Cumaná es una ciudad que se ha vuelto calurosa, en general, especialmente en las últimas décadas; no siendo así en tiempos pasados, cuando, por ejemplo, el investigador alemán Alejandro de Humboldt advertía el clima fresco de la zona. La presencia de muchas plazas y parques con mucha vegetación ha caracterizado la arquitectura y biodiversidad de la zona. Pero acciones tan irresponsables, como la denunciada, contribuye a las consecuencias del cambio climático.
