In this writing I am going to tell you about a place that I have already mentioned in a previous post, since due to the size of the place more than one publication is needed to describe all the interesting things there are in it.

It is The Necropolis of Christopher Columbus in Havana.

The Colon Cemetery is considered an open-air museum, a monumental and architectural work of great historical and cultural value. Although I have always known about this site because it is one of the oldest and most renowned cemeteries in Cuba, I had not had the opportunity to visit it and walk through it as often as I have done in the last year, and the truth is that the place fascinates me.

It may sound a bit strange to say that I am fascinated by a cemetery, but this place is much more than a place of eternal rest. Every time I visit it, though, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it is inevitable not to think about death (and that distresses me a little), but as death and life cannot be separated, despite death, life is present in the beauty that surrounds it. This is a place full of history, with majestic works of art that have endured through the years, which are part of the cultural heritage of the country. Something that hypnotizes me almost literally every time I am in front of this necropolis is its main entrance.

The Gate of Peace/ JANUA SUM PACIS

With this phrase we are welcomed by this magnificent stone gateway, which has a large central semicircular arch through which the funeral procession enters, and a large double-leaf grille that remains open from morning until dusk. On either side there are two smaller arches for people to enter. In addition to its imposing size, it is remarkable for the details and decorations with different symbols that adorn it. Above its central arch, there are two reliefs that recall two passages from the Bible, the one on the outside is the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the one on the inside is the Resurrection of Lazarus from the dead. I have always looked at them from a distance, as it is difficult to define them clearly at their height, and until I enlarged the photograph I was unable to observe them in more detail. At the highest point of the central arch are three elaborate white marble sculptures symbolizing the three Heavenly Virtues, "Faith, Hope and Charity".

As we enter the cemetery we find at every step different architectural works with beautiful designs, such as; mausoleums, dissimilar marble monuments of angels and religious symbols, chapels with large domes, detailed ironwork designs, and much more. The tombs are very varied in terms of shape, size and the materials used to build them. White marble abounds, but granite and other types of marble are also found.

Many of these tombs tell moving stories and have become popular legends and pilgrimage sites. As I wrote at the beginning, it is impossible to talk about this extensive place in a single publication, but I do want to tell one of the many legends that most Havana residents know and that moved me very much the first time I heard it. The moving story of " The Miraculous".

Amelia Goyri, " The Miraculous "

Amelia Goyri lived in the last century and was in love with a young man of lower social status than herself, so her parents did not approve of the relationship. However, neither of them stopped loving each other, and it was only with the passing of time after the death of their parents that the young people were able to marry. Shortly afterwards she became pregnant. Unfortunately, the birth was complicated and both mother and daughter sadly died. Amelia was buried in a simple tomb in this cemetery together with her baby who was placed at her feet.

Her husband was absolutely heartbroken, so much so that he visited her grave frequently every day and to attract the attention of his beloved, he would sound against the gravestone one of the rings of the same. This custom was maintained until his death. It is said that when the marble sculpture was placed on the tomb, the husband, when he left, always looked at her face, without turning his back on her. This is a simple but beautiful marble sculpture of the young Amelia holding her daughter with one arm and leaning on a cross with the other.

Finally, according to the story, the popular legend begins the day they decide to open the tomb, more than ten years after her death, to exhume her remains in the presence of her husband, and on removing the tombstone it is discovered that the two bodies were astonishingly intact and that Amelia was embracing her daughter in her arms. The tomb was closed again and has remained intact to this day.

This story soon spread throughout the city and from then on Amelia became a legend, becoming known as The Miraculous One. Her tomb is considered a sacred place, and is visited almost daily by women who ask her for the miracle of motherhood and by mothers who ask for the health of their children. Fresh flowers and offerings in her honor are always found at her grave, and it is customary that people who visit her to ask for her favor knock on one of the rings on the tombstone to attract her attention and ask her to grant them a miracle. When they say goodbye, they slowly walk away without turning their backs on her.

Walking around this place and admiring the beauty of its art is something I enjoy very much. The tranquillity and the white marble of the sculptures and tombstones convey elegance and give me a sense of peace. As a passionate of the history of my country, I really enjoy walking through the Colon Cemetery and discovering the final resting place of several personalities and heroes that have been part of the history of the nation. Besides being a place of great cultural value, it is of great historical importance, a real treasure that allows us to connect with our identity.

The Necropolis of Colon is undoubtedly a special place, which invites us to appreciate the beauty. Full of legends and stories of love and veneration. A treasure that we must preserve and honor forever.

Un gran Saludo a toda la comunidad!

En este escrito que les presento voy a narrar acerca de un lugar al que ya hice alusión en un post anterior, ya que por lo extenso del lugar se necesita más de una publicación para describir todo lo interesante que hay en él.
Se trata de La Necrópolis de Cristóbal Colon, en La Habana.

El cementerio de Colon es considerado un museo al aire libre, una obra monumental y arquitectónicas de gran valor histórico y cultural. Aunque siempre tuve conocimiento de este sitio por ser uno de los cementerios más antiguos y renombrados de Cuba, no había tenido la oportunidad de visitarlo y recorrerlo con la frecuencia que lo he hecho en este último año, y la verdad el lugar me fascina.

Quizá suene un poco raro decir que me fascina un cementerio, pero este lugar es mucho más que un sitio para el descanso eterno. Aunque, cada vez que lo visito tengo sentimientos encontrados. Por un lado, es inevitable no pensar en la muerte (y eso me angustia un poco), pero como muerte y vida no se pueden separar, a pesar de la muerte, la vida está presente en la belleza que lo rodea. Este es un lugar lleno de historia, con majestuosas obras de arte que han perdurado a través de los años, las que forman parte del patrimonio cultural del país. Algo que me hipnotiza casi literalmente cada vez que estoy frente a esta necrópolis es su entrada principal.

La Puerta de la Paz/ JANUA SUM PACIS

Con esta frase nos da la bienvenida esta magnífica puerta elaborada en piedra, que tiene un gran arco central de medio punto por dónde entra el cortejo fúnebre, y una gran reja de doble hoja que se mantiene abierta desde la mañana hasta el atardecer. A ambos lados hay dos arcos de menor tamaño para el acceso de las personas. Además de su imponente tamaño llama la atención los detalles y decoraciones con diferentes símbolos que la adornan. Sobre su arco central, hay dos relieves que recuerdan dos pasajes de la Biblia, el de su exterior es la Crucifixión de Jesucristo y el del interior la Resurrección de Lázaro de entre los muertos. Los mismos siempre los he mirado desde la distancia ya que a la altura que se encuentran es difícil definirlos con claridad, hasta que no amplié la fotografía no pude observarlos con más detalle. En el punto más alto de su arco central se encuentran tres elaboradas esculturas en mármol blanco que simbolizan las tres Virtudes Celestiales, "Fe, Esperanza y Caridad".

Al adentrarnos en el cementerio nos encontramos a cada paso diferentes obras arquitectónicas con diseños de gran hermosura, como; mausoleos, disímiles monumentos en mármol de ángeles y símbolos religiosos , capillas con grandes cúpulas, detallados diseños de herrerías, y mucho más.
Sus tumbas son de lo más variadas, en cuanto a forma, tamaños y materiales con los que se construyeron. Abunda sobre todo el mármol blanco, también se encuentra el granito y otros tipos de mármoles.

Muchos de estos sepulcros cuentan conmovedoras historias y se han convertido en leyendas populares y sitios de peregrinaje. Como escribí al inicio es imposible hablar de este extenso lugar en una sola publicación, pero si quiero contar una de las tantas leyendas que la mayoría de los habaneros conocemos y que me conmovió mucho la primera vez que la escuché. La conmovedora historia de "La Milagrosa"

Amelia Goyri, " La Milagrosa"

Amelia Goyri vivió en el pasado siglo y estaba enamorada de un joven de menor posición social que ella, por lo que sus padres no aprobaban esa relación. Sin embargo, ninguno de los dos dejó de amarse, y solo con el paso del tiempo después de la muerte de sus padres los jóvenes pudieron casarse. Poco después quedó embarazada. Desgraciadamente el parto presento complicaciones en las que infelizmente mueren madre e hija. Amelia fue enterrada en una sencilla tumba de este cementerio junto a su bebé la que le fue depositada a sus pies.

Su esposo quedó absolutamente desconsolado, tanto así que visitaba su sepulcro con frecuencia cada día y para llamar la atención de su amada, hacía sonar una de las argollas del mismo. Está costumbre la mantuvo hasta su muerte. Se dice que cuando se colocó la escultura de mármol sobre la tumba, el esposo al retirarse lo hacía mirando siempre su rostro, sin darle la espalda. Esta es una sencilla pero hermosa escultura de mármol de la joven Amelia sosteniendo con un brazo a su hija mientras con el otro se apoya en una cruz.

Finalmente, según la historia, la leyenda popular comienza el día que deciden abrir la tumba, más de diez años después de su muerte, para exhumar sus restos en presencia de su esposo, y al retirar la lápida se descubre asombrosamente que los dos cuerpos estaban intactos y que Amelia abrazaba a su hija entre sus brazos. Por lo que la tumba volvió a cerrarse y se ha conservado intacta hasta el momento.

Esta historia se difundió enseguida por la ciudad y desde ese entonces Amelia pasó a ser leyenda, convirtiéndose en La Milagrosa. Su sepulcro es considerado un lugar sagrado, y es visitado casi a diario por mujeres que le piden el milagro de la maternidad y por madres que piden por la salud de sus hijos. En la tumba siempre se encuentran flores frescas y ofrendas en su honor, es costumbre que las personas que la visitan para pedir su favor toquen una de las argollas de la lápida para llamar su atención y rogar que les conceda un milagro. Al despedirse lo hacen alejándose lentamente sin darle la espalda.

Recorrer este lugar e ir admirando la belleza de su arte es algo que disfruto mucho. La tranquilidad que se percibe y el blanco de los mármoles de las esculturas y lápidas transmiten elegancia y además me brindan una sensación de paz.

Como apasionada de la historia de mi país, me gusta mucho caminar por el cementerio de Colon e ir descubriendo el lugar de descanso final de varias personalidades y héroes que han sido parte de la historia de la nación. Además de ser este un lugar de gran valor cultural, es de gran importancia histórica, un verdadero tesoro que nos permite conectarnos con nuestra identidad.

La Necrópolis de Colon es sin dudas un lugar especial, que nos invita a apreciar la belleza. Lleno de leyendas e historias de amor y veneración. Un tesoro que debemos preservar y honrar por siempre.
