English Version

When I was a child I believed that the name of the municipality of the capital, Old Havana, was not as symbolic as it was literal. I thought it was called that because it really looked old, and not because it was the oldest part of the city, the place where it was founded and the expansion of the first town began several centuries ago. But now that I know, I am still convinced that the name continues to be more real than symbolic. And that is the feeling I have most of the time when I walk through these streets, it is not just an old city, but a space that carries the weight of the years marked like folds in every corner, in its narrow streets and in its buildings that have seen better times.

Some symbols of the city, restored more recently, also seem to carry on their shoulders the weight of the years, although with a renewed air that returns part of their splendor. Colonial buildings, open squares, old fortifications and remains of walls that still preserve fragments of history.

And that is precisely where the charm of this city lies, in that contrast with the more modern areas, which although they try to give a new air to the surroundings, do not manage to erase the atmosphere of “Old” city, which shows itself just as it is, and which imposes itself in every corner.

The people who live and pass daily through its parks and historical sites are used to this view, but I am always amazed by something different every time I go through it. I let myself be caught by its environment of peeling facades with worn graffiti like the places that hold them, somewhat rusty iron balconies where clothes hang in the sun, and cobblestone streets where one walks slowly, to remind us that here everything happens calmly and at a different time.

That is why every time I return to Old Havana I feel that I am not only in the oldest area of Havana, but in a historic place where old does not mean lost, but eternal.

Cheers, and until next time!
