Greetings and Happy New Year 2023 to the whole community.😃

In this Wednesday walk I am going to share some photos that I took when I was visiting some relatives, they are from a very busy area of Vedado, in Havana City. I am referring to the much visited corner of the intersection between 23rd and 12th streets.

En este paseo de miércoles voy a compartir algunas fotos que saqué cuando estuve de visita en casa de unos familiares, son de una zona muy concurrida del Vedado, en Ciudad de La Habana. Me refiero a la muy visitada esquina del cruce entre las calles de 23 y 12.

Corner of 23rd and 12th.

23rd Street and 12th Street are two streets that extend from their beginning to their end throughout the Vedado area, and they intersect at this renowned corner. It is a very busy place because it is the site of several commercial and gastronomic establishments of great renown over the years.
It also has a great historical and social significance, so much so that it is considered a National Monument.

It has a special place in the history of Cuba, for being where the former president Fidel Castro gave his famous speech declaring Cuba a Socialist State, after celebrating the burial of the victims of the attack on several airports in the country, which preceded the invasion of Playa Girón, in 1961.

Esquina de 23 y 12.

La calle 23 y la calle 12, son dos calles que se extienden desde su inicio hasta su final por toda la zona del Vedado, y tienen su intersección en tan renombrada esquina. Es un lugar muy concurrido por encontrarse en ella varios establecimientos comerciales y gastronómicos de mucho renombre a través de los años.
También tiene una gran significación histórica y social, tanto así que es considerada Monumento Nacional.

En la historia de Cuba tiene su lugar especial, por ser donde el otrora presidente Fidel Castro dio su famoso discurso declarando a Cuba Estado Socialista, después de celebrarse el sepelio de las víctimas del ataque que se realizó a varios aeropuertos del país, que precedieron a la invasión de Playa Girón, en el año 1961.

It is a very busy street for having several very famous gastronomic establishments such as the Cinecitta pizzeria, or the Cafeteria / Restaurant that bears the same name 23 and 12, because it is right on one of its four corners, and is now under repair.

From 12th Street you can see the entrance to the famous Colon Cemetery, declared a National Monument for its great architectural value and one of the oldest in the country.

On a large part of 12th Street, just after crossing 23rd Street, there is a boulevard, which covers both sides and has stores of different types, clothing stores, cafes, supermarkets .... That in another era (not so distant) lived better times, but with the economic crisis that the country is going through, they have deteriorated and have lost variety and quality.

Es una equina muy concurrida por tener varios locales gastronómicos muy famosos como son su la pizzería Cinecitta, o la Cafetería/ Restaurante que lleva el mismo nombre 23 y 12, por encontrarse justo en una de sus cuatro esquinas, y que ahora se encuentra en reparación.

Desde la calle 12 se pueden observar la entrada al famoso cementerio de Colon, declarado Monumento Nacional por su gran valor arquitectónico y uno de los más antiguos del país.

En gran parte de la calle 12, justo después que se atraviesa la calle 23 existe un boulevard, que abarca ambos lados y que cuenta con comercios de diferentes tipos, tiendas de ropa, cafeterías, supermercados... Que en otra época (no tan lejana) vivieron mejores tiempos, pero con la crisis económica que está atravesando el país se han deteriorado y han perdido variedad y calidad.

On both sides of 23rd Street, a few meters from this corner, you can see several cultural sites such as The Cuban Film Archive, which keeps in its archives all the material related to the country's filmography.

The Strawberry and Chocolate Center, named in honor of the well-known and award-winning Cuban film, where films are exhibited and discussed by experts in the field.

Across 23rd Street is the Charles Chaplin Cinema, which is the headquarters of the Cuban Cinematheque, and where first-run films are shown. This cinema is also one of the main venues of the Latin American Film Festival held annually in December.

There is also a shopping mall such as the well-known Tencent, very busy in other times. It is a large store that has existed since before 1959 and where a wide variety of items of all kinds were sold. Unfortunately it currently has many empty spaces and a rather poor offer.

En ambos lados de la calle 23 a pocos metros de esa equina, se puede observar varios sitios culturales como son La cinemateca de Cuba, que guarda en sus archivos todo el material referente a la filmografía del país

El centro Fresa y Chocolate, que lleva el nombre de la reconocida y galardonada película cubana, y donde se exhiben y se debaten los filmes que se proyectan por personas entendidas en el tema.

Cruzando la calle 23 se encuentra El cine Charles Chaplin que es cede de la cinemateca cubana, y donde se exhiben las películas de estreno. Este cine es también una de las principales sedes del Festival de Cine Latinoamericano que se celebra anualmente en el mes de Diciembre.

También se encuentra un centro comercial como el conocido Tencent, muy concurrido en otros tiempos. Es un amplio comercio que existe desde antes del año 1959 y donde se vendía una gran variedad de artículos de todo tipo. Por desgracia actualmente cuenta con muchos espacios vacíos y una oferta bastante pobre.

To finish my walk, a curiosity is that on the corner of 23 and 12 was taken the famous photograph of Che Guevara that has gone around the world. Its author is the famous Cuban photographer Alberto Korda.

Para terminar mi paseo, una curiosidad y es que en la esquina de 23 y 12 se tomó la famosa fotografía del Che Guevara que le ha dado la vuelta al mundo. Su autor es el famoso fotógrafo cubano Alberto Korda.
