When one hears the name of the Castle of San Salvador de la Punta, it is common to think that it was given that name for being located at one of the ends that give access to the Bay of Havana. However, the truth is that before its construction began this site was already known as La Punta. The fortification took the name of the place, which was called that by the inhabitants of the city precisely because of its location, in one of the most visible and strategic sites of the bay.

This Castle had as its objective, together with the fortifications of El Morro and La Cabaña, to protect the nascent city. Situated right at the entrance of the port, it offered a privileged view of any vessel that tried to approach the coasts. After the fierce attack on Havana by the feared pirate Jacques de Sores, it was decided to reinforce the defensive system of the town, and it became necessary to fortify the city to increase the security of its inhabitants.

The Castle of La Punta, as it is known, is built with the same rock of the place. It is small in size, essential for establishing points of vigilance, trenches, and the necessary artillery. It is surrounded by a small moat and is located at the entrance of the bay, so the view of the sea opens in all its breadth, reminding of its defensive character.

Currently it is a museum. After its restoration by the Office of the Historian of Havana, which returned to it the splendor of its beginnings, it was converted into the place where remains and architectural treasures found in vessels that in other centuries sank in this bay are preserved. After being rescued, they have been put on display so that everyone may appreciate their value. For its historical importance and what it represents in the memory of the city, it has been declared World Heritage.

This is also a promenade site for tourists, where it is usual to see fishermen in the mornings and at sunset. It is also a beautiful place for lovers: walking with the orange sun shining over the sea and the sky dyed with purple reflections is an amazing experience. Here begins the Havana Malecón, a favorite site of many for a walk at sunset or for painters and drawers to find inspiration in this paradisiacal landscape by the sea.

It is also a very busy site, since nearby converge important Havana avenues such as Paseo del Prado, San Lázaro Street, and the Malecón Avenue, in addition to one of the entrances of the bay tunnel. Several old buildings in the surroundings give it a classic and singular charm.

The Castle of La Punta is not only a fortress, it is also a symbol of resistance and beauty. Its history reminds us of the importance of protecting the city, and its present shows us a space where memory, art, and the daily life of the Habaneros come together.

Cuando se escucha nombrar al Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta, es común pensar que se le otorgó ese nombre por encontrarse en uno de los extremos que dan acceso a la Bahía de La Habana. Sin embargo, lo cierto es que antes de que se iniciara su construcción este sitio ya era conocido como La Punta. La fortificación tomó el nombre del lugar, el cual era llamado así por los habitantes de la ciudad precisamente por su ubicación, en uno de los sitios más visibles y estratégicos de la bahía.

Este Castillo tenía como objetivo, junto a las fortificaciones del Morro y la Cabaña, proteger la naciente ciudad. Situado justo a la entrada del puerto, ofrecía una vista privilegiada de cualquier embarcación que intentara acercarse a las costas. Después del feroz ataque a La Habana por el temido pirata Jacques de Sores, se decidió reforzar el sistema defensivo de la villa, y se hizo necesario fortificar la ciudad para aumentar la seguridad de sus habitantes.

El Castillo de La Punta, como se le conoce, está construido con la misma roca del lugar. Es de pequeño tamaño, lo esencial para establecer puntos de vigilancia, trincheras y la artillería necesaria. Está rodeado por un pequeño foso y se encuentra en la entrada de la bahía, por lo que la vista del mar se abre en toda su amplitud, recordando su carácter defensivo.

Actualmente es un museo. Después de su restauración por la Oficina del Historiador de La Habana, que le devolvió el esplendor de sus inicios, fue convertido en el lugar donde se conservan restos y tesoros arquitectónicos encontrados en embarcaciones que en otros siglos se hundieron en esta bahía. Tras ser rescatados, han sido puestos en exhibición para que todos aprecien su valor. Por su importancia histórica y lo que representa en la memoria de la ciudad, ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

Este es también un sitio de paseo para turistas, donde es habitual ver pescadores en las mañanas y al atardecer. Es además un hermoso lugar para los enamorados: caminar con el sol anaranjado brillando sobre el mar y el cielo teñido de reflejos morados es una experiencia asombrosa. Aquí comienza el Malecón Habanero, sitio preferido de muchos para un paseo al atardecer o para que pintores y dibujantes encuentren inspiración en este paisaje paradisíaco junto al mar.

Es también un sitio muy concurrido, pues en sus cercanías confluyen importantes avenidas habaneras como el Paseo del Prado, la calle San Lázaro y la Avenida del Malecón, además de una de las entradas del túnel de la bahía. Varias edificaciones antiguas en los alrededores le otorgan un encanto clásico y singular.

El Castillo de La Punta no es solo una fortaleza, es también un símbolo de resistencia y belleza. Su historia nos recuerda la importancia de proteger la ciudad, y su presente nos muestra dun espacio donde se unen la memoria, el arte y la vida cotidiana de los habaneros.
