A fantastic balcony facing the Bay of Havana [EN/ES]
English Version
The Castle of Santo Domingo de Atarés is one of the old fortifications that was part of the defensive system of the city of Havana several centuries ago. It was built with the objective of guarding the Cuban coasts and protecting the entrance of the bay. After Havana was invaded by the English in the 16th century, the government of Spain realized the vulnerability of the city and undertook the task of protecting it. Thus began the construction of several fortifications in key and strategic points with the objective of maintaining constant surveillance of the bay and the sea.
That is why in one of the highest points of the area, from where there was a wide view of the bay, the main center of commerce and entrance of goods, the construction of the Castle of Atarés was begun, on the so-called Loma de Soto. The location bears the surname of the owner of the land, who also decided to donate these lands so that the work could be built.
Of all the fortresses that were built in Havana, that of La Cabaña is the best known and most visited for its extension, location, and history over time. However, for me, the Castle of Atarés offers one of the most beautiful views that can be contemplated of the city.
I had never visited this place and in reality it is little known. Other fortifications usually take the spotlight, but after its restoration, carried out a few years ago on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana, this has become one of the most beautiful and welcoming museums I have visited.
The most astonishing thing is the postcard of the bay that opens before us. Under the sky unfolds a wide panorama of the Havana port with its large unloading structures and the ships and boats that move in its waters. At both ends the emblematic buildings of the city can be distinguished, its towers, the vegetation, and the urban silhouette against the horizon.
As we go up the ramp that gives access to the Castle, the city seems to move away and become smaller, while the panorama becomes wider and more majestic. It is as if from there Havana showed itself in all its greatness, with the bay under our view, guarding centuries of history.
Visiting the Castle of Atarés is not only a tour through an old fortification, it is also an encounter with the ancient history of the city. From above the view invites us to reflect on the passage of time and to value the present beauty in a unique mixture of history and landscape that makes this site an unforgettable place.
Cheers and until next time!

Hey girl ❤️ I wish there were an option for me to see all those beautiful architectures there ☺️ I know one day I will visit… still on my bucket list :) I must ask… our media platforms are giving so much information about Cuba and what's going on there—energy crisis and fuel shortages… is that all true? I truly hope that what the president of the other big country is saying is just a lot of nonsense. Stay strong ❤️
Hello dear, the international press almost never favors us much, but this time I have to say it’s true. Energy crisis, yes, fuel problems too. I would say we are going through one of the greatest crises Cuba has faced since the system changed. Inflation, economic crisis, general discontent. All of it is real, maybe they exaggerate a little when reporting the news, I don’t know what the other president says, but we do have a major crisis. Partly aggravated by external pressure, and partly by internal problems in the country. Lately, many things are being talked about.
This has made my interaction on Hive more difficult, with frequent power and internet outages affecting my work on social networks. But there’s nothing to do, this stage had to come at some point.
Thanks for your concern, I’ll follow your advice.
We’ll stay in touch!
Fuck :/
I hope it will be better soon! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, me too
