Important approaches that helps when am planting rice directly on my farm without first planting on a nursery bed
HELLO HIVE
cultivating rice can be done in so many different ways and farmers are free to choose whichever choice of planting method they prefare to use, there are three commonly used methods around my place but one which am going to dwell upon is the one that involves planting it directly on the farm without making and form of nursery cultivation.
It is very painstaking to plant twice because the first one refused to germinate well.
This method normally comes with its own risk part of which is the low probability that the rice would germinate compared to the case of planting it on the nursery before transplanting it to the main farm.
Part of those risk are the case where the land has to have just a small amount of water since planting it would require the land have no water showing above the ground level it has to be as dry as the land where you are planting your maize crop, once there is too much presence of water beyond this quantity then you are gradually exposing the rice to danger of being rotten before it even germinates.
This planting method is very good for planting upland rice that do not need much water to grow and produce.
The second problem has to deal with animals like birds and rodents that do pick up what I have planted in the ground and I have resulted to planting more than the required number of rice seeds in each hole so an increase from the normal 3-5seeds to 15-20 seeds though it is not economical as I would be using more than required but I have a guarantee that atleast four seeds might be left in each hole after they've eaten from each hole.
I can always reduce the rice once it has germinates for the holes where they end up germinating more numbers than I need.
The other method is to try and prevent the birds from finding the traces of each holes and I do this in two ways one is for me to plant the rice inside a farm that has grasses in it and then apply chemicals once it is a day from germinating or if there no grasses on the farm then I would use my leg as am planting to cover the holes so they wouldn't be able to notice where the holes are once the whole place is level leaving no traces behind.
I can also pour so rice seeds on the farm so they would be distracted by it and wouldn't mind digging what's inside the ground since they have already been served what they want without stress already.
I have to also be extra careful so that no seeds fall on the ground while planting cause this would likely trigger them into believing there is rice on my field.
There is this approach that I do not support or approve of at all but some farmers have resulted to using that, this involves mixing the rice seeds with poisonous chemicals before planting them but I see this approach as been cruel and violating this animals, no matter how much damage we believe they cause I still think we should also protect them since they also part of the ecosystem.
