Stealth Camper Van for Photo Trips

It's 5pm on May 29th, 2023, I'm sitting on a bench at one of my favourite places for evening walks and sunset photography, and I do not know how long the nice weather or the battery of my old laptop will last ... in either way I will have to move to my van which is parked about 15 minutes away at the road.

A few days ago I realized that I have been talking about my van for quite some times in my posts, so I thought I might as well make a post about it because Hive helped me buying it.

Last year I made a huge Power Down because I didn't want to wait until I have saved enough money to buy a van that I could transform into a camper van, and because since the pandemic the prices have increased quite a bit, I thought I shouldn't wait until I can't afford one anymore.

While the Power Down I was searching for a van, and searching, and searching ... and finally I found a Volkswagen Caddy that wasn't too expensive and that wasn't too old. White is not my favourite colour, but for stealth camping the best colour, I suppose. There are literally millions of white VW Caddys and other white transporters around. So, mine would just be one of many.

It's a 2014 VW Caddy III, also known as Caddy 2k. It was a cargo van, so there are only the two front seats in it - perfect to build a camper :)

My plans were big and perfect, but since I'm not a carpenter nor do I have other usefull skills, the result was nice, but way off my plans :)

Right after I bought the van I added a carpet to the floor. In Winter I found out that a thin carpet isn't enough to keep the floor warm. Maybe I'll change this one day in future, just as well as some other things ;)

After the carpet I added a little bit of insulation in the cavities of the side walls of the car, and then I lined the inside of the car with felt fabric ... not perfect in any way, of course.

My plan for the bed was simple, but due to wrong measurements it didn't fit at first, but my jigsaw did it's work very well :)

Some foam and fabric cover and my bed was ready. Under the bed is enough space for boxes with food and clothes and for other stuff I need when I'm out and about.

Except a few small stickers and the big on the roof front above the windscreen I didn't do anything to the outside of the van and when you close the curtain, which replaced the bulkhead, nobody would think that someone's sleeping inside the van ... I hope ;)

A few pillows are on the bed behind them there's my sleeping bag ready to use. When I find a good place to sleep I just take off my shoes and climb back between the seats. I wonder if in 10 years I will still be able to do that or if I have to get out of the car and use the side sliding door.

I have covers for the rear and for the side window in the sliding door, and when I close the curtain behind the front seats, no light should be seen from the outside. I don't have installed lights inside, but bought a few cheap LED lights in the hardware store, added magnets and that way I can stick them anywhere I need them. They make the inside brighter than daylight and I usually need only one.

I love this car, it's such a great help when I want to take photos of a sunrise further away from home. The Dolomites are an about 4-hour-drive away from home, and since I have the van I go there the day before, have a little hike, sleep and get up right before sunrise ... nomore driving for hours to be on time for sunrise.

I have a gas stove and can store food and water for a couple of days. I even have a portable toilet, which I never want to use 😅 and so I'm planning to make longer trips than only 1 or two nights for some time in the future.

I use it every day for commuting, shopping... you couldn't do that with a regular camper van.
There are millions of this and similar cargo vans on the roads here, and most are white 😉 Some people put only a matrass

in it to sleep and some build a complete camping van. Mine is something in the middle 😀

Ha, awesome upgrade!The idea is very cool, to have such a transport for traveling to the wild.
I know what is done in all-terrain vehicles, sleeping places with a folding sofa and a table.

At long last we get to see the White Stallion, awesomely reliable are the VW Caddy a popular delivery vehicle or been known to convert well into small camper van.

Nice finishing up the work, now enjoy the time getting away for a couple of days at a time. Have heard sheep's wool is good insulation that absorbs liquid condensation without leaving smell, something to look into.

I have used stone wool for the sides and maybe I'll insulate the floor one day ... or just keep the feet in the sleeping bag on colder days 🤣 !LOLZ

That's a reason why I have chosen a VW Caddy: they last forever, hopefully this one too 🤞

Yep, I have thought of some kind of slippers, but in Summer you don't really need anything but maybe socks and for the Winter I have thick self-knitted socks ... knitted by my wife, of course 😉 !LOLZ

We've been told that mole's bites were venomous, so please tell Woody he should take care that he doesn't get bitten, but I think they can smell that someone's waiting for them on the surface anyway.

The weather in the north was fantastic - shouldn't have come back down here because it's raining and there might not be any dry day this week ☔

Last couple of weeks before my son leaves has been a bit of a run around assisting him with preparation for his extended trip to New Zealand, mum to the rescue!

Having superb weather with cooler days which I thoroughly enjoy, nice to go for a walk without having photography in mind, simply enjoying good company watching life unfurl.

A beauty of it's own on the other side of the world, hopefully all works out and we have organized him properly with so many changes in travel it is tedious.

Dolomites my area I enjoyed thoroughly when visiting over on my two visits in the region, definitely could have spent a lot more time there as well.

Yesterday's forecast for the Dolomites was heavy rain, but the evening turned out quite nice, although not many sunset colours. The night was rainy and this morning was lovely and calm, but also a little bit colourless or better said, the colours didn't last very long.

The mountains are able to teach me patience 😉 !LOLZ

More than a month...., he loves the country, visited family and back with his friends organizing daily life.

I have had a nice hike and the shepherd I was talking about in my comment on your latest post even showed me the path over some stones through the deep muddy edge of the little lake to the photo spot 😀

It's actually a sunset spot, because the setting sun illuminates the mountains in red - Alpenglow - but in the morning I didn't have to share the place 😉

Majesty of early morning light tinged in purple, with green closer by, a beautiful spot the shepherd would know from herding in the region.

Thanks that you like the image - the actual sunrise wasn't that good because there were no clouds. Actually, the shepherd is the tenant of the mountain pasture there and he said it's allowed to camp, as long as the people take their trash with them ... it was clean all around, although the night before there were 36 tents around the lake, he said.

Most times I forget to take a video, but when do think, I upload it to YouTube and also on TikTok. If something should destroy all my computers and hard disks, I still will have these videos as backup 😉

Reflections more than make up for the clouds, shepherd has a large flock to tend up the slopes, healthy lifestyle for both.

Photo and video excellent, nice place to sleep over be up early to enjoy the quiet of the day.

I love reflections of mountains in lakes or ponds 😀

The shepherd has two German Shepherds helping him with the sheep. I wonder who is working more - the man or the dogs 😉 !LOLZ

It's really a quiet place, far away from the loud crowds. Everyone who is on such places in the evenings or early mornings or during the night, enjoys the silence.

Well, you are obviously not a thief, as they would think that there are cameras in the van that are taking photos of the area, and if they approach the van, their photos will appear in the police control room 🤣 !LOLZ

I will definitely go to the Baltic Sea again. It's a very long journey to get there, but it's not as hot as in the south, it seems to me, and it's cleaner there 😀

I will only say this. When a comparison of size between Austria and South Africa is done, you will find that SA is 15 times bigger than Austria. In fact, the whole of Austria will fit into a part a part of the Western Cape Province and SA has 8 more provinces. So your country is very small methinks 😉 !LOLZ

The sea is beautiful and I love it there, but I don't think I would still love it if I had to stay for two weeks - a couple of days or even a week is enough 😉

It's an excellent vehicle, you have everything there, it's very well equipped, I congratulate you, you have a place to take refuge when your wife is angry with you 😅, I imagine she's worried and you're taking photos and staying calm in this vehicle... home, I better not make jokes , I do not want your wife to get upset , or possibly laugh , better not to say more , an excellent vehicle bought with your work on this panel , very good , I keep working and persevering , it is the best way to get what we wish, you must be very proud of yourself, now you must propose another goal and you will surely achieve it

My wife knows that the van is my place to be alone and relax, to forget... she would certainly laugh 😀

My next goal is to become an Orca again ... or to buy a new camera 😉

I'm happy that 5 years ago I decided to join the Blockchain, otherwise I surely wouldn't have the van yet.

A real motorhome woul dbe much too expensive for me too, and I wouldn't even have a place to park such a big vehicle 😅 !LOLZ That's why I bought a cargo van and built the interiour myself ... as good as I could 😉

So... I counted one tripod and seven pillows. Now I understand which piece of equipment is the most important! !LOLZ I can imagine how lovely this VW van is, especially after your adjustments. All in all, even if it's not a perfect dream come true -- it's better to hold that bird in your hand than keep looking for a pie in the sky, right? My sincere congratulations! ofc I wish you to visit many interesting places which you could not get to without the night stop and camping. Does your van has a fridge for the !BEER, or you hide your stock inside all these pillows?

It’s strange, usually, buying a car opens up new horizons and you can travel more, which means you can take more photographs, but in your case I see everything exactly the opposite. Hi my friend,

I am on the road whenever I have time, and my camera is always with me.
I don't have much time for the Hive though, or better said I don't feel like posting.
Maybe 2024 will be better, but I don't know yet. There's so much to do at work that I don't want to turn on the computer at home, but rather go somewhere for a sunrise or sunset photo instead.

Hope you're fine too, my friend, and I am wishing you and your family a Happy New Year 2024 - may it be better than 2023, or at least I hope that life turns normal again 🍀
