The forecast for December 10, 2022, was heavy snowfall and I was looking forward to my first mountain hike in snow this Winter ❄️

At first I called this post "White & White" but on a white background even the snow in the images looks more grayish, so I renamed it to "White & not so White" 😉

Sometimes the fog and high clouds cleared a bit. Maybe you can see the trail in the lower right of the image.

My biggest concern was that the road to the starting point of my hike might be too snowy because I didn't have snow chains for my van with me. But I was lucky - it was slightly snowing and the road a bit icy, but my van didn't have any problems climbing the 16.5 km / 10.25 mi long Villach Alpine Road (website) till I reached the big parking lot at an altitude of 1,732 m / 5,682.40 ft ... and I was alone, no other car was there - great 😁

It was 5:30 in the morning and still completely dark, of course, so my head torch was a big help. The trail to the peak of the Dobratsch mountain (2,166 m / 7,106.30 ft) is on a bumpy gravel road and about 8 km / 5 mi long. Because of the usually large number of hikers, it is regularly snow groomed, making hiking easier. I wouldn't have cared because I had my snowshoes with me anyway, but of course it was easier that way. There's also another path, that is nicer and shorter but much steeper and I didn't want to hike it in Winter in the dark.

The snow on the ground was hard and easy to walk on. It was snowing every now and then and the closer I got to the peak, the more windy and colder it got.

Right below the peak there's a high transmitter tower and a mountain lodge that was still closed that morning. But the first room at the entrance is always open for people who need some shelter. I changed my wet shirt in there and had a hot tea before I went for the last few meters to the little church on the ridge above the lodge.

This is the Mountain Lodge on the peak of the Dobratsch Mountain. In the small extension of the house to the left there's a room right at the entrance to have a rest and to warm up.

This is another transmitter tower, a really small one. To the left behind it there's the second church and to the right you can see the summit cross on the peak of the Dobratsch mountain and to the right there's a weather station.

I haven't been lucky with the weather because the sky kept cloudy and the fog and high clouds dense most times, so I could forget the planned sunrise shots. I didn't mind a lot though, because I still had the whole mountain for me alone ... I don't know many things I enjoy more than having a mountain for myself, no matter the weather conditions.

It's not always about taking photos of great vistas, and so I just enjoyed the silence and took some photos of the foggy landscape below and around me and also on my way back down to my car I enjoyed the white and took a few detail shots from icy trees and the few things I saw.

I wanted to take more photos, also photos of the trail, but because all was more or less white on white, you wouldn't have seen much. So, these few more or less minimalist photos here are all I have.
Seems that not many people share what I loved that morning because only a few showed up when I was back at my van.

This post was actually supposed to be posted in 2022, but my wife and I have been in bed with severe flu for the last couple of days and today, January 1st, 2023, is the first day that I'm feeling well enough to be online again and tomorrow we go back to work.

It's 2023 - the New Year has started and I want thank you all so much for your ongoing support and friendship although I'm not so much here and my engagement level has dropped quite a bit.
And I want to wish you all a Happy and Healthy Year 2023 - may all your wishes come true and let's hope that all the troubles in the world will have an end🙏

Ultimate silence, now people and lots of snow, being out before the flu hit was actually good timing all round!

Little crooked tree in white looks determined to grow into a big tree one day, shrugging off the blight of winter.

Minimalist photography at it's best when enjoying the silence all around, happy you were able to go, weather offers different mindset this was more enclosed in the moment.

The trees at this altitude grow slower and not as tall as they would grow in the sheltered valley. If I remember right, it hasn't grown much from last time I was here.

I have had big fun hiking up and back down - no people to hear, no people around - heaven 😁 !LOLZ

Having mountain to oneself always a relief, when looking for the peace and quiet, sounds like you had an amazing hike up in almost white-out conditions.

To sit and just be, yes camera not always remembered, normally when sitting outdoors in front of the fireside listening to the call of the night.

For me the North, mountains with clouds dancing, snow, I find very relaxing when sitting in extreme heat.

Where I have grown up it was sometimes even colder in Winter and we had much more snow in the valley back then. Most people don't like the cold and so they don't get out ... means I can enjoy it all on my own without disturbing noises 😀

Unique title for the post, Hannes. The tree photos are especially beautiful. That is a wonderful thing for the lodge to keep a room open for travellers.

Nothing like a hike in the snow and fresh air to clear the cobwebs from the mind.

On all or better said on most mountains they have such shelter rooms and sometimes even little cabins that people can use freely if they overestimate themselves or their gear - it's often been a life saver.

Yep, seeing almost nothing but white was great and it was my best hike since quite some time.

we don't have snow in the valleys either, but most mountains are beautifully covered in that white stuff. Some ski ressorts don't have enough snow though. The Winters are not how they were when I was young when we had 1.5 meters in front of the house.

I'm back at work because there's a lot to do that can't wait. Otherwise it would have been better to stay at home for a few more days.

Yes, the winters when I was a child were full of snow. The snow started to melt only in March...🥰

A great adventure that you had, and all of the photos are magic as usual.
What interests me is the silence and the lack of other souls, so you must have felt like a king up there.
I am up to 2 kilometers now with the walking, but 8 kilometers are still too far for me. Especially if the gradients are steep.

Wonderful photos my friend and an outstanding adventure.

Btw. What are the square screens in the photos?
Looks like some kind of windbreakers to me?

Many years ago, this was a ski area and now it's a nature park. These fences must be leftovers from the ski area times and their only purpose can be windbreakers in my eyes too.

Greetings Hannes,

Very irritating to have the crowds around, especially during the holiday seasons and just this morning, a group of children arrived with their parents arrived near a spot where I was in nature. The one little guy ran around and screamed so loud that even the routes of the airplanes had to be changed 🤣 !LOLZ

Hopefully the mountain goat will have no flu when he pulls me up to the peak, as one slip and I will end up in hospital for a year 🤣🤣🤣

Interesting that they did not take the screens down. Maybe they still serve a purpose as windbreakers.

There are still many people skiing there or snow hiking or just hiking. The winds on this mountain can be very strong and because there's nothing around that could act as shelter they might have left these windbreakers.

Good afternoon Hannes,

we have two of the long power cuts today plus a 2.5 power cut in between that we are in right now.
Our new inverter can only handle up to 3 hours and I was not on during the first long one this morning.
The next long power cut today is 8 to 11.30 pm.

Hahaha, you will start to call like a hyena when they get a hold of you 🤣 !LOLZ

I have to give you a medal for this remark. At times they discover something new about themselves and then they get very excited. So not only will they flood our ears with their new wisdom, but they also let all of their friends know 😮

Good evening Hannes, like me you work too hard, as that is what I heard from the doctor this morning.
The bad thing is that the blood tests flagged me as critical, as my iron count is 3.8.
That's why I feel so confused and lame lately.

As you know, they suspect inner bleeding and I had the gastroscopy and the colonoscopy tests recently and they could not find the problem. Now I will be booked in for a series of tests with long names, as they want to check my inner intestine. So don't be surprised if I am not online for a few days.

Ah, the power cuts suck and now the people are planning to take action against it. So watch this space.

And many more things to tell each other for hours and hours. Never ending 🤣 !LOLZ

Good afternoon Hannes.

Wait until you are my age and hopefully if I am still around, we will talk about your doctor visits again my friend 🤣 !LOLZ

Now hear this. We waited for the whole morning to receive the e-mail confirming the appointment and the time for the tests. So I asked my wife to phone our doctor's rooms. The appointment has not been made, as the lady that is supposed to do it, is away on leave!

Here below is the evidence of my condition and look at the 3 scores marked in blue.
The * means critical and the L means low. ie, *L . The limit averages that it should be in is mentioned next to each one.

So for instance, my first one "iron" is 2.8 and it should be between 22-31.

s transferrin means that I had a ferritin transfusion of 3.27 liters. That is supposed to boost the iron, but it did not.
The absorption was only 3% instead of 20-55 %

And so I will have to continue to battle with tiredness, lethargy, confusion and few other symptoms until the problem is found and now we have to wait again for the doctors call, as my wife left an urgent message for him.
Such is life here at the moment.

Oh yes, they can talk about all things under the sun and all things under the moon 😁

yep, I know that in a couple of years the number of my doctor visits will certainly increase.

Do you remember that I told you to not only eat the soup, but also the spoon?
If you were working for the government like I am, tiredness wouldn't be a problem 😴 !LOLZ

Now jokes aside, these numbers don't sound great to say it nicely. You can't be the only one with such problems, my friend, there must be more with similar symptoms and I have no idea why they can't find the cause that's responsible. Hopefully you'll soon get the call from the doctor and you will tell me positive news soon after the tests 🙏

happy news as we at last received a confirmed booking for the test. It will be done on Monday.
So now let's hope that they find the cause of the internal bleeding.

Yes, I remember about also eating the spoon, but I cannot sleep on the job, like certain mountain goats do, so I will have to eat many spoons with the soup 🤣 !LOLZ

Not many here with the same symptoms, but maybe many in the city. They reckon that this test is concentrated on the red blood cells, and they concentrate the scans where they think that the red blood cells are bleeding. Too technical to describe, as I don't even understand it, but let's see what the results would be 🤞

and now for some sad news. A lady at the doctor's rooms where they do the tests contacted our medical aid in order for them to approve and pay for the test. The scans take 6 hours to be completed.
So the medical aid approved it, but the same with my left knee replacement that we had to cancel, the medical aid will only pay for half of the amount. They want to take the half from our medicine savings for the year and then we will have no money to buy the pills that I need to take every day.
We also don't have the money to pay the other half, and so we had to cancel the test.

But there is hope as tomorrow morning they are checking my hemoglobin and if it has dropped lower, they will admit me into the hospital. The hospital might then do the test.

Oh I think that I do earn money while I sleep, as that is what hive is there for, but it is nothing like your cushy sleeping arrangement at work, which is so much better 🤣 !LOLZ

We had a meeting this morning at the Rape Crisis Center and you will be amazed at the new project that what we are planning. But I don't want to say too much now until it is launched.
So at least others will not have to eat spoons like I do 😁

Believe me when I say that I was really looking forward to that test, as I had a feeling that they will find the cause. But at this stage no can do,

yesterday good news, today sad news and hopefully tomorrow good news again. I don't know what a low hemoglobin value means, but if it helps to get this test then let it be just as low as necessary.

Oh you don't know how good it feels to earn money while sleeping at work - you always wake up in the morning with a smile on your lips 🤣 !LOLZ

Hemoglobin is basically a red protein that transports oxygen in the blood. We will hear on Monday what will happen as our doctor will give us the results.

No go, as you know that I have a very weird imagination, so best that you rather get a spy camera to click her face when you ask her if your mountain goat horns caused her any birth pains.
