Weird Wonderful Wicked

Winding Down With Some Fun

As a new week approaches let me take you on a little wacky show of what arrives in our midst, no I'm not talking politicians they are simply stupid in our country, no more, no less!

Shovel-headed Garden Worm (Bipalium kewense) this slimy character only appears after rain, do not touch it is said the slime on their body carries neurotoxins, who wants to play with something that looks like this?

IMG_9126.JPG

Also known has hammerhead worms this invasive flatworm appears at approximately ten centimeters in length along our coastline. Weird to look at!

IMG_9127.JPG

Moving along, first time sighting a Bagworm what character is this? Caterpillar that construct their own silken bags, strengthened and camouflaged with small twigs and stalks. Creates worm’s equivalent of a protective ‘wooden cabin’, attached to the wall here, normally to a branch with a silken strand. Moth caterpillers mostly leaf-eating, group of moths called Psychidae.

IMG_9705.JPG

Wonderful part about this sighting, "Males develop into free-flying moths while females remain forever trapped by their bag. She remains wingless, eyeless and legless!" Source Oh he cannot eat, only lives a short period when leaving his bag, he has to find her to mate super quickly.... Call that a love story for Valentines Day!

IMG_9704.JPG

Read thought for today for meaning, my new friend in town the Familiar Chat - Oenanthe familiaris, little bird first on the wall then....

IMG_9688.JPG

Sat/shat on the head of the Tokoloshe our magical mythical Zulu creature similar to a Goblin in other folklore I suppose... They do put the wind up some folk to stay out my garden. One on each post of the entrance, wicked bit of fun....!

IMG_9690.JPG

Being diminutive in stature perhaps they remind me of politicians, many locals raise their beds on tins/bricks to avoid visits from the Tokoloshe. Read up about this little guy if you interested in myths.

Oh those dreadful worms! We have them here as well, though I have only ever seen two on my property. Toxic for human and animal alike. They tell us to freeze them in bags, then to dispose of them. Are they invasive to your area or native?

They are invasive species, we don't see them often but are aware not to touch.

Native to Southeast Asia, never cut them that much I know, perhaps freezing with salt might kill them, would have to research further.

The bird shots are beautiful. I don't know if that work is native to South Africa alone, because I don't think we have that in my home country.

Worm and Caterpillar are invasive species here to my knowledge. Importing plants or food crops many different life forms hitch-hike to far off places.

Oh I understand, they seem different and they have these hammer head like you describe. I've never seen that.

Not sure how far up into Africa they do go, everything moves with flow of food normally introducing animals into regions.

We saw the awful hammerhead worms here as well a while back. I sprinkled salt on it, seemed to do the trick, well I hope so!
That caterpillar is amazingly well camouflaged, but the poor female stays entrapped, no running away from the man 😉
Hope the coming week is going to treat you well Joan!

Those worms only I have only seen after rain, warm people not to cut them with spade as they regenerate from pieces. Have not tried to kill them as we seldom see them.

Caterpillar cycle of life is very different to most, attractive to see as I have heard of our more common ones that are resident here, this is not native to SA.

Also hoping for a week to do some more catching up on the desk and in the home with cooler weather for a day or two. !LUV

If I'm not mistaken they are native to Eastern North America, or one of the species that fall under the category. Nature Now

Seeing such unusual sighting normally something that catches the eye not being the norm. Always capture photography, never touch or interfere, research may have interesting insight to the lives we don't see most times.

Happy Monday, now to tuck into a week of catching up with other tasks. 🙃

Looks like the birds are the sign of spring.

That's another ugly warm I don't want to be seeing around. Looks like a snake at first sight. Surely no one would be playing with such.

Looks like SA is in the news with politics. Will hit you up on WhatsApp.

Most things are best looked at without touching, people being inquisitive must pick them up, or they would not have warnings about it now.

SA in the news, about time, things have been going array for a long time. Once again we suffer by hands of Cadres who have not realized massive change in the world has already transpired.
