Warthog Pumbaa

Empty Road Africa

Highly unlikely ever finding an empty road in Africa, always something on the go, today it is our wild African hog, WARTHOG (Phacochoerus aethiopicus). Pumbaa the meaning is not to identify the animal, but the characteristics leaning more towards ignorant, foolish, lazy and similar descriptive undertones.

Mum and Piglets ambling down the road

Kneeling down foraging roots, grass, bark off trees will include some insects and fruit, protective pads on their wrists allowing them to kneel while grazing, eyes placed high back on flattened head is better overhead vision when grazing for predators.

Warthog bachelor party in the road

Females with young move in groups called sounders, males normally only present during mating season what's new? Females will assist each other with suckling piglets, moving around very vocal with grunts, squeals and snorts!

Their nickname Pumbaa might not be quite correct considering they can run fast in a chase up to 34m/h or 50k/h when fully grown, known to get out of trouble with lions as well. Young are weak at birth, taken by serval cats or African eagles.

Mum telling Piglets 'Get a move along'

Eastern and Southern Africa when out on empty road, one will surely come upon Warthog wallowing in shallow mud pools, or being chased of farmers land helping themselves to crops.

Female giving a little nudge....

Pretty or ugly you can debate with tusks that are teeth, males have to predominant 'warts', from which their name is derived. Tusks are used between males when seasonal breeding rights occur.

Big Boy having a back scratch

Warthogs make use of underground burrows abandoned by porcupine, aarvark or similar animals. Always entering burrow tail first to ensure safety being able to defend themselves with tusks, keeping young out of sight. Poorly eyesight, using sound and smell are their strength against predators and in finding food.

Contentment written all across his face

When visiting remember most will not know what you talking about shouting out Pumbaa, that's a Disney attempt of turning animals into movie stars.

These are wonderful captures of the warthogs, Joan. I didn’t realize they were that big until I saw the video. Amazing how the teeth grow like horns.

Taken in early June when driving down empty roads, they are literally everywhere enjoying life on bended knees munching away.

Tusks are impressive, they are not massive standing around 30 inches at the shoulder, with approximate weight 120 to 250 pounds. Most enjoyable eating...

It must be a very pleasant experience to see how their families grow up being free and how the great male wild boar knows when it is time to flirt and fall in love with his females to continue with his stipulation and offspring ...how beautiful is the creation of this continuum of life.

It has been a long time since I visited a safari zoo to see the animals in their own environments, thank you for allowing me to bring those memories to my present with these images in your land.

Thanks, @joanstewart

Looking at their size you wouldn’t think they would even be able to run… wooow.Even with poor sight they are able to defend themselves. That’s interesting to know

Nicely captured, am assuming you use your lens camera? They appear as if you captured them at close range. Thanks for sharing this with us, beautiful animal world out there.

Small camera has nice zoom built in, the Male scratching his back on the tree I could have scratched the other side for him, if he stood still... 🙃

For someone in my neck of the woods, this is only something that could be seen in a Disney movie. It really makes you think about what is beauty. I find that a warthog with a strange set of teeth that protrude, is just divine. How amazing it must be to see such a creature in real life. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Cool photos! On the one hand, they are such cute pigs, but on the other hand, they look so dangerous.

These captures June this year, plenty over the years most probably the most seen animal on any trip to the bush other than monkey and baboon.

They look scarry but they are poor creatures, a prey to predators, I love phumbaa in Lion King. Are they eaten like hogs?
Thank you @joanstewart! All sorts of animals roam Africa! How blessed you are.

Looks are deceiving they turn tail and run when approached, mothers lick the piglets facial hair to make it look more intimidating than they are.

Have eaten once slow roast over open fire visiting a bush lodge years ago. In Zimbabwe 2007, where meat was scarce found slow cook made by chefs up there to be exceptionally good being fresh meat.

Wildlife is protected unless killed in culling due to large numbers on land, more often than not see them running in the bush rather than served up on a plate !LOLZ

No they run as fast as those short legs can carry them when humans approach.

Good to know. As from another part of the planet, I'm not sure if I would ever be able to see them in real life.
Thanks for sharing :)
