Time After Time Our Magic Little Town

Arrived in Warner Beach to live in a quaint two bedroom house with lovely verandah looking over the sea, railway track ran in front of the home a short walk over the bridge offered access to the tidal pool and beach. Yes Baggies Beach is well known throughout the country, this homely town welcomed us in 1980.

Currently We In Winter With Aloes In Flower

Today I suggested to my son we do a walk, we lived here before he was born, a pleasant sunny day to show him some of what the town looked like, who lived where...., much has changed! To find the house you really have to know the little lane that takes you around and down in a narrow one way, which remains the way it was when we arrived in 2 Colin Road, Warner Beach.

ColinRoadMap.PNG

Google Map of Area we chatting about Lane and Road not mentioned, marker of house evident

From a humble home, today property luxurious complex living, extremely expensive units, situated about three kilometers from where we currently live slightly inland.

Entry into Sutton Lane we parked and walked the front of Jabulani Senior Citizens Residence this has been here for many years with no history when originally developed, I would think in the 1960s. Impressive mural painted on the wall to brighten up the parking area for visitors, a block of reasonably priced flats for the elderly with stunning views over the sea.

Street Art In Theme To Match The Region

Looking down Colin Road to Kingsway the main road through the village, some of the old homesteads still stand, prime land I wonder how long it will be before they too are sold off.

IMG_7702.JPG

Big square building on left is new luxury units where house stood.

IMG_7709.JPG

Always admired this gorgeous homestead.

IMG_7710.JPG

1950s Red brick home appeal, with Jabulani to right in red and yellow paint.

IMG_7712.JPG

Original house across the road from our driveway, similar verandah to what we had in red brick.

Warner Beach was planned in 1910 by surveyor P.A. Warner as a residential area for government pensioners. When we arrived many of the houses were for people working on railways, sugar mill, schools popping up in 1909 teachers, doctors many sought to live along the coast, close to Amanzimtoti and Durban city.

Train Tickets.jpg

Train from Durban (Berea Road) to Warner Beach at this time Old landmark of Durban Station was being dismantled, new site for station, preserving only the front façade used for offices in city.

Tuesday we learned of tragedy during Sardine Run, a great loss to many, Goolam skipper of the boat (made/repaired nets and taught younger people how to fish) boat capsized on backline sadly passed away on the beach, while Sandile a part of four man netting team, washed to sea. Wednesday no boats went out onto the water paying respect to the two deceased, many search & rescue teams found Sandile, well done!

IMG_7707.JPG

Frontage of home we stayed in was a hedge now a wall, Baggies beach in front of the flats in view.

For now it is old mixed with new emotions this place we have called home. Stood by each other as a community through many years of floods, good years and lean years, emotionally standing together.

Where once small towns or villages dotted up the coast slowly grow a lot larger, the Ubuntu drive is evident keeping us together. Time after time there is magic to be found through people who are a strong community.

Closing off with apt song, missing #threetunetuesday this week. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time (On loan from YouTube)

Good morning dear friend @joanstewart, how are you?
I love a beautiful city full of beautiful memories, I like the view of the sea.
I am very sorry for what happened to the crew of the ship, a terrible tragedy

Hi dearest, it's heartbreaking to hear about the recent tragedy. Your memories of Warner Beach are so vivid wow, it's like taking a walk down memory lane with you. The community's resilience through tough times is truly inspiring and I'm hoping for better days ahead for them 🙏🙏🙏

Loved how small the community was, now expanded and developed far too much although the backbone of people are still here. Older people look out for each other meeting in the town or on beaches over the years.

I imagine what it would have been like to live there in a house with a terrace overlooking the sea, that is the place I dream of.
It was great that you went for a walk with your son and relived beautiful memories.
I am very sorry for the tragedy of the ambarcacion @joanstewart

We battled to find the house having arranged rental in Johannesburg meeting the owners, when we eventually did it was a massive surprise, now all treasured memories.

Fisherman need to be respected facing dangers going out, same as farmers, people have lost that of late simply living from grocery store to table.

It is obvious that there will be a huge difference between the one you visited years ago and the one you visit now. A lot of new things will be added. So a lot must have disappeared. hahaha

We still live here, town has changed over the forty odd years of living here, from small to more developed.

Change will happen. Because people do not live in small centers. Everyone wants to go to live in big cities. So the result is that the city is getting bigger day by day. But unity is also good because it increases convenience. @joanstewart

Cities can have lots of people, become very lonely places compared to small town living where everyone gets the opportunity to get to know each other.

Tongaat very hard hit by tornado, it started in Umgababa not far from us, went out to sea then entered again at Ballito. Clean up operations have started between election results coming out now. Big change!

It's always interesting, going back 'home' and seeing what stayed the same and what has changed. I know some years ago when I returned home to where I spent 32 years from birth, the streets seemed much narrower than I remember them and my home I grew up in was seriously postage stamp type land and layout. I'm not sure why things seemed so much bigger and different as a child.

It looks lovely there! Is the weather fairly even keel, or do they experience hurricanes/typhoons, or other such storms?

Thanks for sharing; take care and have a lovely day!🤗💜 !LADY

I grew up on the West Rand near Johannesburg which has changed slightly not drastically we always pass the house when visiting, not as often as we once did.

This house was our introduction to coastal life over forty years ago, we have
seen many floods, recently a tornado passed through. Coastal living now is far too over populated, development changing the quaint look the town had originally. Change is constant....

!LUV have a great day

Although change can be good, sometimes it's hard to see it come to a place like that. Sometimes, change isn't for the better; it just depends.

Take care and enjoy the weekend! !LADY !PIMP🤗💟

Change can be beneficial if/when done correctly, not always the case alas with the greedy. Currently our big shuffle after elections, results will have to wait to see how the country moves forward together, hopefully better than the last 10 years.

Lovely sunshine here once again, have a brilliant weekend as well !LUV

I agree with you! Unfortunately, not all those in charge/power understand that.

We had every conceivable weather type today (except snow and hail). It was a bit crazy, but in the end, sunshine did prevail! Take care and enjoy! !LADY

Many elections around the world currently or coming soon, going to be interesting! Cannot understand how people simply don't go out and vote for their rights.

Absolutely the best weather here anyone could wish for! Happy Sunday with !LUV

I agree! I had a friend who the first time Trump was running, refused to vote. She was a Republican and in reality, they way I feel for those who do what she did is that if the person who does win the election isn't what they wanted and even if they do make things worse for the people during their time in office, do not let me hear that person complaining about anything related to it! They chose not to vote; they've in essence made their bed, (as my mom would say) and now they shall have to lay in it! I just don't get why anyone would choose to put their head in the sand when it comes to their right to vote!

I'm glad you're weather is awesome! Ours will be eventually; we're just slow to get to summer this year. It's June-uary for sure here! Take care and have a wonderful week!🤗💜

Our country had something along the lines of 57 parties or individuals stand for election, sadly out of 60M only around 28M register with half that actually going to vote, I agree don't complain when the fat lady sings, leaving all to deal with when not used effectively.

Have a wonderful week, sure your warmer weather will arrive soon. 🤗

Well @joanstewart, summer may have finally made it in my neck of the woods! My car thermometer said it was 80 degrees when I left to come home. It's pleasant outside right now. The forecast is showing the next 10 days with highs mostly in the 70's, a couple of just over 80 and one or two in the mid 60's. I can live with that!

Take care and enjoy your day!🤗💜 !LADY

What a great trip down memory lane for you. It is always sad to see the original homes replaced by huge hotels and skyscrapers. It looks like a lovely area still.

Change is very evident with older homes disappearing on prime land thank goodness some are holding onto what is still in the area. Progress is not always good, nor pretty!
