Golden-tailed Woodpecker

Brief Encounter Visit

Look who I see about in my tree a Golden-tailed Woodpecker (Campethera abingoni) first time in a spot able to photograph without disturbing my visitor.

Medium in size (20 cm average) the male and female vary slightly on head plumage where the male has a reddish crown compared to females dark crown with red only toward the back of the head.

Upside down checking around..., look at how well we blend into this tree.

Finding whatever is living in the wounded trees where limbs fall during heavy winds or monkeys land too heavy, something most definitely nutritious in here!

IMG_0127.JPG

Nimbly moving between the branches searching for insects or grubs which they enjoy, tree also has lichen which does no harm to a tree or rocks we have in the garden, (another interesting story in nature), not sure if they take interest in lichen.

His bill an auger is,
His head, a cap and frill.
He laboreth at every tree, -
A worm his utmost goal.

Very happy to see this bird dining out on my tree, normally very quick in and out. My highlight of the week in bird watching.

Always get trigger happy with the camera when I am able to capture an unusual visit like this, not often they venture over the road where many trees and food are found in church gardens.

The bird looks absorbed upside down picking into the hole in the tree, amazing how free birds can be in their environment.

Love seeing the woodpeckers, they are always so fast and shy.

Exclusive viewing where the woodpecker was totally unaware he was being watched and photographed, very lucky!

Cute woodpecker. Very similar to the green and grey-headed woodpecker.

Woodpeckers look similar sometimes it is size, this bird has spots, is slightly bigger than the Cardinal with barring across the back which I have seen previously, then we have the olive-backed in our region which I have yet to see.

I love the woodpeckers. They have a lot in common regardless where they live. But the red crown is so distinctive.

Hello dear friend @joanstewart good day
This is another of those bird species that are worthy of admiration, they are very industrious and determined when it comes to building their nests in the branches of trees.
I love the vivid colors of this bird
I appreciate that you shared these beautiful images
Have a beautiful day

Enjoyed watching movement and selection on where to hunt for food here. Very pretty feathers of the woodpecker blending into a tree magnificently.

That is wonderful species, the colours are great, red, green and golden not really easy to catch such example on camera. Seeing him between the leaves it is easy to oversee too, although the colour of his head probably will make it noticeable :)

Tree is currently in flower with yellow blooms, good camouflage, red crown against bark of tree not too noticeable, only when hanging around does one see the birds features completely.

Nice capture! Would love to have some woodpeckers in my garden. But when they see my cats, they’ll probably go to my neighbours’ garden.

Nice to have visit, regular in region not very often to my garden. Cats would have to be pretty quick and nimble to get through tree to catch birds.

Great shots of the busy woodpecker. I like his long tail. The woodpeckers here don’t have that long tail.

Relative to body size, tail is not long, I love the golden GT stripes running through which is a bit of an optical illusion on length. Gorgeous bird stayed long enough this time at least to photograph.
