Matsuo Basho, ‘A Caterpillar’.

A caterpillar,
this deep in fall
still not a butterfly.

The Japanese poet Basho (1644-94) is now regarded as the supreme master of the haiku or hokku form. In this three-line poem, Basho homes in on the development of the caterpillar into a butterfly, a development that is here arrested or withheld.

Haiku are always strictly speaking about nature, but of course, the poetic significance of the butterfly still struggling to be born, to grow and take its wings, can be extended to the pathos of all undeveloped promise, in humans as in insects.

On that note, I love and leave friends in Hive for now, enjoying our Winter once again from Durban. An exceptionally cold spell went through leaving snow in areas that seldom see snowfall. No butterflies in rainy wet weather....

Thanks for visiting, butterflies deserve a place on their own, not my forte at identifying, always fun learning as we go. Butterflies on average in state of wings last only 2 to 4 weeks, change with seasons one does not realize who often you looking at a completely different species.

Lol "Yeah we get snow" make me jealous 😃

Beautiful butterfly collection through the months of the year so far.
That is some good advice you gave on planting flowers that invite them into our garden, butterflies in the garden even add to the garden's beauty.

Loved how people did snowmen all over the city of Johannesburg, really exciting to witness, last time snow fell up in the city region was 2012.

Garden is alive once again now the cold weather has left, not as many, but they will come....

2012 I was my fourth year in SA and probably the snow wasn't as much as this year's. From the photos you shared this year is quite a lot, do you know if it snowed in Bloem, Bethlehem, those places are always very cold in winter as well.

No the 2012 fall was light, this was far more, much more widespread.

Hello Joan!

What stunning, beautiful images. As luck would have it, 2 days ago I also posted about butterflies. I think it is a lemon butterfly.😉

Ohhh, you really know how to take care of the garden so that the butterflies come on their own. It is nice to have started my day contemplating these beauties and the poetic way you tell us some things.

Also, very good tips you have left to have our own beautiful green garden, visited by butterflies and helping nature to continue to flourish.
