August Winds

Stirring Up Change

Out for a walk in the park at Amanzimtoti Civic Centre and Library most enjoyable late afternoon after sudden change in weather, warming up a lot quicker than anticipated, most definitely hope this is not a sign of a hot summer approaching.

IMG_4718.JPG

Many trees shed their leaves at this time of the year going into Spring making space for the new to follow, clump of trees where Woody obviously loves to explore after a few dozen most probably visited from early morning marking their spot on every tree available.

IMG_4720.JPG

Carpet of leaves below, always upsetting to see this was spotlessly clean a week ago with visitors arriving leaving trash once again between the leaves.

Local News Big drive happening between the communities called "Tidy Towns" groups assemble going around cleaning to assist municipalities, currently running in most towns along our coast with promising results. If not you, who? Under the current ruling party little is being fixed or repaired. Ongoing problem has been 2020 floods, 2021 strike action burning and looting, 2022 even worse flooding, roads have more potholes than tar, sewerage breaking regularly, electricity black outs daily on occasion more than once a day. Should you wish to be motivated into positive thought a link to listen to Dr Imtiaz Sooliman Gift of the Givers Agri EC Congress 2023

Now back to the walk, which we do enjoy, two trees stand side by side one laden with fresh leaves the other only bearing flowers yet to sprout leaves, talk about individuals....

IMG_4724.JPG

Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) is an African member of the duck, goose, and swan family. A shelduck sub-family Tadorninae. More an ornamental bird not farmed for food, they populate most places with water throughout the land.

IMG_4725.JPG

Cuddly cute these little ones go ahead confidently being taught by parents, these are second largest water fowl in South Africa and not good to eat, thank goodness or we wouldn't have so many.

IMG_4730.JPG

Further along the river we amble noticing the Kigelia africana, or as we know the Sausage Tree with a poisonous fruit that grows Sub-Saharan Africa.

IMG_4741.JPG

Flowers are stunning in blood-red to maroon hanging in long panicles from the tree which has traditional medicinal uses.

IMG_4743.JPG

Swinging back to the river is this Cormorant or African darter? Research revealed being on the coastline they often nest together with herons and egrets, difference between the two is the darter has a straight bill, while the Cormorant a hooked bill, these are Cormorant out in the late afternoon sun.

IMG_4740.JPG

Returning to the car Woody by now shooting blanks still has to go on the large rocks!

IMG_4749.JPG

With the Aloe Flowers all drying out we leave once again with a wish to you and yours to stay safe and take a walk it is extremely healthy for body and mind.

Cormorants and African darters must create a picturesque scene by the water. And ending the stroll with dried aloe flowers? What a perfect touch! 🦆🌼

A very thoughtful hike, nice photos of the trees and the flower, it has an intense red.

I had a laugh reading about the ducks, I'm glad for them that they can't be eaten.

Greetings thanks for this nice walk. @joanstewart

Some water fowl depending on what they eat could end up killing you, so not such tasty meat after all no how big and plump they look.

Thanks for visiting and have a great day.

Such a beautiful walk. Really lucky to have that close by for you to spend your walking breaks in! Stuck in the city with few parks and natural areas is not ideal. Especially with the August winds and the grass fields burning in Gauteng. Nasty stuff.

Stunning photographs of the birds and flora! Thanks for sharing. Stay well.

There is a link in there to the medicinal uses of the tree, Western medicine still has a lot to learn from indigenous peoples. 🙂

Rain over night I am smiling now to start planting some seedlings, time is right.

For sure. Western medicine in its reductionist mindset is limited and restricted. Such a sad case really.

Same here! Been a week and I am starting to see my little plants sticking their heads through the ground.

I'm testing a new method of planting into cardboard boxes, once they large enough to go into the garden prepare areas I think they will cope.

Reasoning, another monkey deterrent, having them in the courtyard where I will see or hear them coming or going.... 🙃

That is really a big problem I am not even thinking about! Luckily where I live now no such apparent problems (yet!). Waiting to see how the garden will devlope.

Hopefully, it doesn't turn out a very hot summer for you but you all deserve a very hot summer for enjoying a snowfall winter after I left. I will be here waiting to read about you lamenting how hot the summer is. 😜

Not nice when our environment is unappreciated and littered, it worse in Nigeria.

With regard to those trees, I prefer to be that big one full of leaves 😃

As for a walk taking wait till I get to Cotonou, you wouldn't be keen on taking a walk on Nigerian streets.

As I reply, I hope you on a taxi going back home to Cotonou to enjoy a good beach walk, life is for living, not in filthy cities that is for sure!

When the heat returns not today it rained through the night, hooray, the air conditioner will work full time once again, while I hide from the sun.

Safe journey home !LUV

Yes am close to the border as I reply, lot of stops and hassles as usual.
I have lots of work to do on my laptop Hopefully tomorrow I should be free for a beach walk 😃

Definitely filthy city is not for me!

Great it, rained over here as well, in Lagos but toward Cotonou is sunshine.

Have a good one 🤗

Nothing beats going home where you have some comfort knowing it is a lot safer.

Will chat once you settled, possibly after a beach walk 😅

Enjoy, nothing beats the fresh air on the beach. At the moment not a place to be here, more sandpaper blast with the strong winds passing through with a chill once again.

Strong possibility of snow in Lesotho again this weekend, yes a couple of days warm, now back to cooler weather...., not complaining!

The weather is changing here also, the rainfall has dropped which I find to be a cooling temperature suitable for me, though my cousin told me yesterday that we are still going to have rain in September. I am not looking forward to those hot temperatures.

@joanstewart A very beautiful park, as for the trees you mention, so is nature so amazing, while some plants bloom in all their splendor others by their change of cycle are shedding their foliage, and both changes occur in the same incredibly amazing space.

Our plants tend to shed right at the end of Winter, making way for Spring. Many trees will flower on bare branches before the leaves reappear for Summer. Sub-tropical is very different in how the seasons change.

Beautiful walk @joanstewart 😊
Let’s hope indeed it isn’t a sign of a hot summer to come.
I love autumn… all the colourful leaves 🍁 🍂 I go to New England again to view them in October… it will be great 😎

The dark red flowers are stunning 🌺
Have a lovely evening!

If we want to bring tourism back to the coast which most rely on, we all need to roll up our sleeves and work toward. 😌
