Remembrance - the action of remembering the dead.

Cenotaph _(means empty tomb) on Whitehall, London a plain memorial with no symbols to any particular creed, culture or nationality, reminding not only the Great War and WWII but all men who have lost lives due to conflict. Only inscription on the tomb is "The Glorious Dead".

Respect is shown at the 11th hour on the 11th day in the 11th month since 1918, over a century now on Armistice (Latin for to stand (still) arms.) Day. Needless to say since time immemorial war may have existed, do we ever learn?

Poppy Beaded By Our Local Ladies

Pondering of late, does mankind live with short term, or no memory of horrors brought about by war, currently many suffer the fate by warring nations.

To my memory I do not recall any time during human history of there being no war, so do we have a way of switching off our memory to the pain and suffering inflicted on each other.

Short history of my own, my Grandfather arrived in South Africa to fight the Boer War, remained and married, first photo of him in collage. Second is of my Aunt Margaret who was oldest in family of four children, their Mother between my Dad being the youngest, both served throughout the years. My Gran passed away during that time (Grand father passed many years earlier), Aunt in photography notified by Father of her death through mail as reflected in collage which I have, devastating news trying to keep contact during WWII.

1900-2000.jpg

Currently I have the letters and diaries through these years a constant reminder about people who fought for our 'freedoms'. This never ended here in South Africa with our brothers being conscripted to war against our own people, Angola war, unrest in region is not something we should be complacent about, tribe against tribe, people against people.

My oldest brother served in the navy through his years of conscription then stood in reserve to his dying day. My brother slightly older was placed in Pretoria to serve his time serving others becoming a chef, everyone we knew went, many never returned, objectors were imprisoned for duration of training period.

Let us remember all those in conflict past and present for one day of a year in peaceful remembrance and silent respect!

It is incredible that as beings who reason and think, we cannot have a conversation about our differences, or different interests, and not always have to resolve it with a violent conflict.

Argentina is also a country that has had to defend its sovereignty against many invasions, throughout history we have been in war many times, even in my adolescence I experienced the war we had against the United Kingdom

I was unaware of this beautiful action of silence on 11-11-11 for peace and the memory of those who are no longer here.

World is at war on so many levels, dialogue between people is sorely lacking!

Everyone shouting louder than the next, most times simply a money making war machine driven by the rich.

11-11-11 remembered in many countries throughout the old British Empire or Commonwealth countries. Durban Cenotaph, Cape Town War Memorial, Johannesburg Cenotaph Vandalized as one blatantly witnesses disrespect within the current day situation, no one talks anymore.

I believe in remembering the dead, and with November being the month of remembering the departed souls by the Catholic church, I suppose all of these interlinks one way or the other. You have a great family.

Many will still uphold the traditional gathering to remember, sad that most of the memorials here in South Africa have now been defaced by the youth. Perhaps not knowing history they unaware that many men of all colours volunteered to go to both wars from South Africa.

Greetings @joanstewart , reading your content and photographs of the year 1918, that was a short time ago, leads me to reflect on how quickly time and life passes us by, to waste it in conflicts and wars. Very brave your family. A hug.

I do not believe the men where brave, more like doing the honourable thing at the time, standing to defend the rights for everyone, to hopefully live free from bondage under draconian rulers that still appear.
