The whistling heron (Syrigma sibilatrix) are a really nice bird species, they always seem to be watching me with curiosity and wonder, when I come across them and have the opportunity to photograph them... They are regularly large birds and rarely flee far in the presence of humans, so it is easy to take pictures of them... It is not that it is an abundant species in my region (north-central Venezuela) but for a decade, the presence of breeding couples during our rainy season months has increased notably... This particular couple was perched on the branches of a dry tree. The two birds were dedicated to making faces at each other, which is why I assume that their behavior has to do with some type of courtship prior to mating. However, as soon as they noticed my presence, they both toned down their amorous attitude and began to watch me... Good heavens, I am a nosy guy, even interrupting the lives of birds! 😂...

Las gazas silbadoras (Syrigma sibilatrix) son una especie de aves francamente simpáticas, siempre parecen estar observándome con curiosidad y asombro, cuando me encuentro con ellas y tengo la oportunidad de fotografiarlas... Son aves regularmente grandes y rara vez huyen lejos ante la presencia humana, así que es fácil hacerles fotos... No es que sea una especie abundante en mi región (centro norte de Venezuela) pero desde hace una década, la presencia de parejas reproductoras durante nuestros meses de temporada de lluvias, se ha incrementado notablemente... Esta pareja en particular, se encontraba posada en las ramas de un árbol seco. Las dos aves se dedicaban a hacerse carantoñas una a la otra, razón por la cual presumo que su comportamiento tiene que ver con algún tipo de cortejo previo al apareamiento. Sin embargo, apenas se percataron de mi presencia, ambas disminuyeron su actitud amorosa y se dedicaron a observarme... ¡Cielos santos, sí que soy un tipo entrometido, incluso interrumpo la vida de las aves! 😂...

They have a beautiful song, very similar to a whistle, although they also frequently croak loudly. I observed this behavior, which seems to be courting, in the morning, with the sun already relatively high above the horizon. It is also the first time I have observed this behavior, although I have seen this species many times before.

Tienen un canto hermoso, muy parecido a un silbido aunque también graznan con fuerza de manera frecuente... Este comportamiento en el que parecen estarse cortejando, lo observé en horas de la mañana, con el sol ya relativamente alto sobre el horizonte. También es la primera vez que observo este comportamiento, aunque si he avistado esta especie anteriormente muchas veces.

The area where I observed this pair belongs to a rural property just half a kilometer from the edge of town. I could hear other birds singing further away. I hope to return often to see and photograph them again.

El área en donde observé esta pareja pertenece a una propiedad campestre a penas a medio kilometro de los márgenes del pueblo. Pude escuchar otras aves cantando más lejos, espero poder volver con frecuencia y volverlas a ver y fotografiar.
