One day I was sitting on a cement bench in a small plaza far from the town center. I had a camera in my hand and was carefully observing an old bicycle leaning against a wall a few feet away. My intention was, obviously, to take a picture of it. But I was also enjoying looking at it and imagining little stories related to it; I was even already thinking of a caption or title for the hypothetical photograph I was about to take. But just as I was about to raise my camera and point it, a young, female voice interrupted me, saying, "Hello, Mr. Linares, I'm Valentina, your friend Pedro's daughter, and I'd like to know how you learned to take photographs." My immediate, instinctive, and unthinking response was, "I kept quiet," I learned to take photos because I kept quiet, little girl!... 😂

Un día me encontraba sentado en una banca de cemento en una pequeña plaza lejos del centro del pueblo. En ese momento me encontraba con una cámara en mi mano y observaba detenidamente una vieja bicicleta recostada en una pared a pocos metros de mi. La intención era, obviamente, hacer una foto de esa vieja bicicleta. Pero también estaba disfrutando observarla e imaginarme algunas pequeñas historias relacionadas con ella, incluso ya volaba en mi mente algún comentario propio o título para la hipotética fotografía que estaba por tomar. Pero justo cuando me disponía a alzar mi cámara y apuntarla; una voz juvenil y femenina me interrumpió diciendo: "Hola señor Linares, soy Valentina, la hija de su amigo Pedro, y quiero que me diga cómo aprendió usted a hacer fotografías". Mi respuesta inmediata, instintiva y sin pensarla siquiera por un instante fue: ¡"Me quedé callado", aprendí a hacer fotos porque me quedé callado niña!... 😂

Immediately after my inappropriate and abrupt response, both the girl and I burst out laughing. So the matter didn't have any further consequences, except for me trying to explain to Valentina that I don't actually know much about photographic technique and that I'm just a guy with a vague understanding of aperture, shutter speed, composition, and that sort of thing. But the girl seemed to like what I was saying and listened to my long, evasive rant. So at one point I also said to her, "I was silent, Valentina, I really was silent, and that's when the photos appear before our eyes, it seems"...

Inmediatamente después de mi inapropiada y abrupta respuesta, tanto la chica como yo dejamos escapar carcajadas. Así que el asunto no tuvo mayores consecuencias, salvo por mi mismo atentándole explicar a Valentina que yo en realidad no conozco demasiado sobre técnica fotográfica y que simplemente soy un tipo con vagos conocimientos de apertura, velocidad de obturación, composición y esas cosas. Pero a la chica pareció gustarle lo que yo estaba diciendo y se quedó escuchando mi larga perorata de evasivas. Así que en un momento dado también le dije: "Me quedé en silencio Valentina, en verdad me quedé en silencio, y es allí cuando las fotos aparecen ante nuestros ojos, me parece"...

And so it was that day, instead of me teaching Valentina anything, I learned myself that my way of taking photographs is simply another product of the years I've spent trying to be less complicated, to lighten the load I've carried on my shoulders for years, which once seemed useful, but in the end was simply a burden. I haven't spoken to Valentina again, but I see some photos on her social media that indicate she's slowly "observing in her own silence." And also, at the end of last year, I saw her on a sloping street talking to a cat and holding her cell phone in her right hand, and she was so engrossed that she didn't even see me walk by. So, it seems she's on the right track after all...

Y fue así como aquel día, en lugar de yo enseñarle alguna cosa a Valentina, fui yo mismo quien aprendió que mi manera de hacer fotografías es simplemente una producto más de los años que llevo intentando ser menos complicado, de aligerar este equipaje que desde hace años llevaba sobre mis hombros, el cual antes me parecía útil, pero a la postre eran simplemente un lastre... No he vuelto a conversar con Valentina, pero veo en sus redes sociales algunas fotos que indican que poco a poco va "observando en su propio silencio". Y además, a finales del año pasado la observé en una calle inclinada conversando con un gato y sosteniendo su teléfono móvil en su mano derecha, y estaba tan concentrada que ni siquiera me vio pasar a su lado. Entonces, parece que va por buen camino después de todo...

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7}
