My father was a joyful guy, a lover of wine, art, sports, good tobacco, and good food. Sometimes he said controversial things, but he always spoke his mind and usually did so in a kind manner...

Dad really liked dogs; he also loved horses and was an excellent rider. But above all, he loved having dogs and interacting with them. In fact, he was a Jack Russell Terrier breeder, and we still have four of these little dogs at home. They have outlived Dad, who passed away a little over seven years ago. Two of those dogs, by the way, were at the foot of his deathbed, and an hour before passing, he was still petting one of them with his hands, which were already almost out of strength. Dad always taught my sisters and me to love dogs, and I guess that is why we all have dogs as pets at home...

Mi padre fue un tipo alegre, amante del vino, del arte, de los deportes, del buen tabaco y la buena comida. Algunas veces decía cosas controversiales, pero siempre decía lo que pensaba y, por lo general, lo hacía de manera amable...

A Papá le gustaban mucho los perros; amaba también los caballos y era un excelente jinete. Pero, por encima de todo, amaba tener perros e interactuar con ellos. De hecho, fue criador de Jack Russell Terriers y aún en casa tenemos cuatro de estos perritos, los cuales han sobrevivido a Papá, quien falleció hace poco más de siete años. Dos de esos perros, por cierto, estaban a los pies de su lecho de muerte, y una hora antes de expirar aún acariciaba a uno de ellos con sus manos ya casi sin fuerzas. Papá siempre nos enseñó a mis hermanas y a mí a amar a los perros, y es por eso que todos tenemos perros como mascotas en casa, supongo...

But what I remember most about Dad regarding dogs are some of his phrases dedicated to these animals, repeating them with a certain frequency when he had a bit too much whisky 😂... He had a slightly shocking phrase that went something like: "The more I know people, the more I love my dogs," but he also had a very beautiful one that said: "You have to have at least one dog, because when everything else fails, your dog will always be there giving everything for you" 😢🙏...

Pero lo que más recuerdo de Papá con respecto a los perros son algunas de sus frases que dedicaba a estos animales, repitiéndolas con cierta frecuencia cuando se excedía con su whisky 😂... Tenía una frase un poco chocante que decía algo como: "Mientras más conozco a la gente, más quiero a mis perros", pero también tenía una muy bonita que decía: "Hay que tener por lo menos un perro, porque cuando todo lo demás falla, tu perro siempre estará ahí dándolo todo por ti" 😢🙏...

I think maybe it is because of everything my father taught us that when I see dogs on the street, I always photograph them, approach them, greet them, talk to them, and —when they allow me to— pet them. And well, also because dogs are just like that, "infinitely beautiful," and they have the best looks I find on the streets... And I just remembered that Dad also used to say: "There must be dogs in heaven; if not, then it is not an entirely good place" 😂...

Yo creo que quizás es por todo eso que nos enseñó mi padre que, cuando miro perros en las calles, siempre los fotografío, me acerco, los saludo, les hablo y —cuando ellos me lo permiten— los acaricio. Y bueno, también porque los perros son así, "infinitamente hermosos", y tienen las mejores miradas que encuentro en las calles... Y acabo de recordar que Papá también decía: "En el cielo tiene que haber perros; de no ser así, entonces no es un lugar del todo bueno" 😂...
