Opening the door of your house at 6:30 AM and finding a guy kneeling in the middle of the street taking pictures to a stray dog, while conversing with himself or even with the dog, is something that might seem strange in any small town in my country, like this one where I live... But over the years I have become "part of the landscape" in the town's streets, so many neighbors simply greet me and stay watching. Others even inform me of the name of the dogs I take pictures (in this strange town, people give names to the stray dogs as well as to the ones they raise in their houses).

Abrir la puerta de su casa a las 6:30 AM y encontrarse con un tipo hincado en medio de la calle tomando fotos a un perro callejero, mientras conversa consigo mismo o incluso con el perro, es algo que podría parecer extraño en cualquier pueblo pequeño de mi país, como por ejemplo este en donde vivo... Pero con el paso delos años ya me he convertido en "parte del paisaje" de las calles del pueblo, así que muchos vecinos simplemente me saludan y se quedan observando. Otros inclusive me informan del nombre de los perro a los cuales les hago fotos (en este pueblo extraño,la gente da nombres a los perros callejeros al igual que a los que crían en sus casas).

Those of you who follow my posts (thanks for that guys) already know that I live and take pictures almost daily in Montalbán (Carabobo State, Venezuela) a town located in a valley nestled between mountains in the north-central mountain range of the country. As a consequence, we have perhaps a hundred cloudy mornings per year. I'm not sure how it happens, but the density and occurrence of fog is even greater in the rainy season (at the pinnacle of which we are between July and August by the way). Then, when the dense fog covers everything, it's the ideal time to go out for street photography.

Aquellos que siguen mis publicaciones (gracias por eso chicos) ya saben que vivo y hago fotos casi a diario en Montalbán (Estado Carabobo, Venezuela) un pueblo situado en un valle enclavado entre montañas de la cordillera centro-norte del país. Esto trae como consecuencia que tengamos quizás hasta un centenar de mañanas nubladas por años. No estoy seguro de como ocurre, pero la densidad y la ocurrencia de la niebla es incluso mayor en la temporada lluviosa (en cuyo pináculo estamos entre Julio y Agosto por cierto). Entonces, cuando la densa niebla lo cubre todo, es el momento ideal para salir a hacer fotografías de calle.

But in addition to foggy streets and people whose silhouettes look like specters in the distance, we also have a lot of stray dogs here. My father, who was not a native of here but born in Caracas, used to say things like: "In Montalbán there seem to be more dogs than people" or "In all my life traveling through Venezuela I have never seen a town with so many dogs in the streets"... And he used to say it with pleasure, because until the moment of his death he had dogs. In fact, he died with one of our dogs named "Maura" (who still lives with us) lying at his feet.

Pero además de calles con niebla y personas cuyas siluetas parecen espectros a lo lejos, también tenemos aquí una gran cantidad de perritos callejeros. Mi padre, quien no era nativo de aquí sino nacido en Caracas, solía decir cosas como: "En Montalbán parece haber más perros que personas" o "En toda mi vida recorriendo Venezuela jamás he visto un pueblo con tantos perros en las calles"... Y lo decía con agrado, pues hasta el momento de su muerte tuvo perros. De hecho, murió con una de nuestras perras llamada "Maura" (la cual aún vive con nosotros) echada a sus pies.

But we have cats too!... Holy heavens, my dear and tender cats, it seems they don't attract as much attention from people as dogs do... Here it is common that the local dog packs are somehow "adopted by the neighbors" and it can even be said that they have pseudo-established territories. But with cats it's different when they are out on the streets. I imagine this is due to their more independent nature and their ability to move over rooftops and other structures. So, the neighborhood relationship is "less intimate" with cats as I perceive it. Also, cats seem to be in smaller numbers on the streets. However, recently I am seeing them in incresing numbers- This is all difficult to really determine, as many of the cats and dogs observed by me on the streets, have a fixed home. So they are on the streets simply because their humans allow them to be. But that is also something that has been customary in this town for as long as I can remember. So changing that behavior may perhaps be difficult.

¡Pero también tenemos gatos!... Oh cielos, mis queridos y tiernos gatos, pareciera que no llaman tanto la atención de las personas como lo hacen los perros... Aquí es común que las manadas de perros locales sean de alguna manera "adoptadas por los vecinos" y hasta puede decirse que tienen pseudo territorios establecidos. Pero con los gatos sucede distinto cuando están por las calles. Me imagino esto se debe a su naturaleza más independiente y a su capacidad para movilizarse por encima de tejados y otras estructuras. Entonces, la relación del vecindario es "menos intima" con los gatos según percibo. Además, los gatos parecen estar en menor número en las calles. Sin embargo, recientemente estoy viéndoles en mayor cantidad... Todo esto es difícil de determinar realmente, pues muchos de los gatos y perros observados por mi en las calles, tienen un hogar fijo. Así que simplemente están en las calles porque sus humanos se lo permiten. Pero eso también es algo acostumbrado en este pueblo desde que tengo uso de razón. Así que cambiar esa conducta quizás pueda resultar cuesta arriba.

Over the years doing street photography I have learned to approach these animals with the intention of getting decent photos. With dogs it's quite easy, even some of them already know me and I even go out a couple of times a week to give them dog kibble carrying a bag (Mental note: Make a post about when I feed dogs and cats in the streets).... With cats it's a bit more complicated as they are more nervous and distrustful in nature, plus they can climb walls and trees with astonishing speed and thus avoid being photographed. But I've found that making "misu, misu, michi, michi" sounds (I'm starting to sound fucking weird) gets their attention and calms them down enough to take some pictures.

Con los años haciendo fotografía callejera he aprendido a acercarme a estos animales con la intención de lograr fotos decentes. Con los perros es bastante fácil, inclusive algunos de ellos ya me conocen e incluso suelo salir un par de veces a la semana a regalarles croquetas para perros llevando una bolsa (Nota mental: Hacer un un post de cuando alimento perros y gatos en las calles)... Con los gatos es un poco más complicado ya que son de carácter más nervioso y desconfiados, además pueden escalar paredes y árboles con una velocidad pasmosa y así evitar ser fotografiados. Pero he descubierto que hacer sonidos de "misu, misu, michi, michi" (ya comencé a sonar raro carajo) capta su atención y les hace tranquilizar lo suficiente como para hacer algunas fotos.

All of the pictures in this post were taken during my morning walk today... Such is the abundance of these adorable kids on the streets, that it took me just 90 minutes to take a lot of pictures (I have many more, I'll post them later)...
