When I return from my long walks in the mountains west of Montalbán, I can easily choose to enter the town again through any of the streets whose ends connect with the dozens of paths and passages that lead to the bed of the small river that marks the end of the valley and the beginning of the ascent to the hills... That's how mid-morning last Monday I ended up returning to the village through “Rivas Street” (📷 01) whose view immediately made me feel that I would find a few interesting things to photograph walking some of its blocks... Then I decided to go ahead and leave behind the mountains and the gallery forest which separates the village from the pastures and hills (📷 02)...

Cuando regreso de mis largas caminatas por las montañas al Oeste de Montalbán, puedo optar fácilmente por ingresar al pueblo nuevamente a través de cualquiera de las calles cuyos extremos conectan con las docenas de senderos y pasadizos que van a dar al cauce del pequeño río que marca el final del valle y el comienzo del ascenso a las colinas... Así fue como a media mañana del pasado lunes terminé volviendo al pueblo por la "Calle Rivas" (📷 01) cuya visión de buenas a primeras me hizo sentir que encontraría unas cuantas cosas interesantes para fotografiar caminando algunas de sus cuadras... Entonces decidí seguir adelante y dejar atrás las montañas y el bosque de galería que separa el pueblo de los pastizales y colinas (📷 02)...

I couldn't resist taking a picture of another one of those huge old “International” trucks (📷 03) which was parked on the left side of the street. Apparently these vehicles were in very common use in the last third of the last century when the orange industry was booming in our town, so many of them are still operational and I can see them almost daily in our streets even though we no longer have orange plantations due to pests and the loss of profitability of that crop... But what really caught my attention in that street was the presence of my friend Rafael Tarazona's old mule, which apparently was tied to a lamp post a couple of blocks away (📷 04)... I like to take street photos including these animals which are used by some people to move to their land in the mountains and to bring and carry supplies constantly...

No pude evitar hacer una foto de otro de esos enormes y viejos camiones de marca "International" (📷 03) el cual se encontraba aparcado a la izquierda de la calle. Al parecer estos vehículos eran de uso muy común en el ultimo tercio del siglo pasado cuando la industria de la naranja estaba en su auge en nuestro pueblo, así que muchos de ellos siguen operativos y puedo verlos casi a diario en nuestras calles a pesar de que ya no tenemos plantaciones de naranja debido a las plagas y a la perdida de rentabilidad de ese cultivo... Pero lo que realmente llamó mi atención en esa calle fue la presencia de la vieja mula de mi amigo Rafael Tarazona, la cual al parecer estaba atada a un poste de alumbrado un par de calles más allá (📷 04)... Me gusta hacer fotos callejeras incluyendo estos animales los cuales son usados por algunas personas para movilizarse a sus terrenos en las montañas y traer y llevar insumos constantemente...

I walked a few meters in the direction of Rafael's mule, but the voice of my friend “Cheo” greeting me from his small carpentry workshop caught my attention and after returning his greeting I took a couple of pictures (📷 05 and 06) while listening to him recommending me to look in his backyard at one of his huge woolly goats (📷 07) and an old mare (📷 08) which I would surely want to photograph... And of course I did! 🤣

Caminé unos pocos metros en dirección a la mula de Rafael, pero la voz de mi amigo "Cheo" saludándome desde su pequeño taller de carpintería llamó mi atención y después devolverle el saludo le hice un par de fotos (📷 05 y 06) mientras le escuchaba recomendarme mirar en su patio trasero una de sus enormes cabras lanudas (📷 07) y una vieja yegua (📷 08) a las cuales seguramente querría yo fotografiar... ¡Y claro que que lo hice! 🤣

I left Cheo working in his carpentry shop but not without thanking him for allowing me to photograph his goat and his old mare. When I returned to the street Rafael's mule was still there tied to the post (📷 09) and a few seconds later he and his sister appeared on the corner approaching the animal (📷 10)... By the time I reached the mentioned corner, Rafael was having breakfast placidly sitting on the edge of the street next to his mule (📷 11)... Every time I find Rafael he is eating! 🤣... We greeted each other and then Rafael asked to bring little Daniel (his grandson) for me to take some pictures together (📷 12) and others of the kid riding the mule (📷 13 and 14).... Now that's what I call being a lucky photographer! 😀🙏... These are the moments that bind me very deeply to my town and its customs, I love its simple people, I like to meet those who are more humble and uncomplicated, I find myself very comfortable among them...

Dejé a Cheo trabajando en su carpintería no sin antes darle las gracias por permitirme fotografiar su cabra y su vieja yegua. Cuando volví a la calle la mula de Rafael seguía allí atada al poste(📷 09) y pocos segundos después él y su hermana aparecieron en la esquina acercándose al animal (📷 10)... Para el momento en que llegué a dicha esquina, Rafael se encontraba desayunado plácidamente sentado en la orilla de la calle junto a su mula (📷 11)... ¡Siempre que encuentro a Rafael él está comiendo! 🤣... Nos saludamos el uno al otro y luego Rafael pidió que le trajeran al pequeño Daniel (su nieto) para que yo le hiciese algunas fotografías juntos (📷 12) y otras del chico montado en la mula (📷 13 y 14)... ¡A esto le llamo tener suerte de fotógrafo! 😀🙏... Estos son los momentos que me ligan muy profundamente a mi pueblo y sus costumbres, amo su gente sencilla, me gusta encontrarme con quienes son más humildes y simples, me encuentro muy cómodo entre ellos...

After wishing an excellent trip to the mountains to Rafael and little Daniel, I walked towards Comercio Avenue and took this picture (📷 15) where you can see Rafael's mule tied to the post and a little further in the background I could see my friend Giovanny holding the hand of his old mother called “Omaira”, one of our most appreciated matrons who is very close to turn one hundred years old... My way along Commerce Avenue was also full of delightful anachronisms like that old Jeep of my friend Edgar (📷 16) crossing at the same corner where he has crossed for as long as I can remember...

Después de desearles un excelente viaje hacia las montañas a Rafael y al pequeño Daniel, caminé hacia la Avenida Comercio he hice esta foto (📷 15) en donde se ve la mula de Rafael atada al poste y un poco más al fondo pude observar a mi amigo Giovanny llevando del brazo a su anciana madre llamada "Omaira", una de nuestras más apreciadas matronas quien está muy ceca de cumplir un centenar de años de vida... Mi camino por la Avenida comercio también estuvo repleto de anacronismos deliciosos como ese viejo Jeep de mi amigo Edgar (📷 16) cruzando en la misma esquina en donde ha cruzado desde que yo tengo uso de razón...
