Tengo gatos conmigo desde hace apenas unos cuatro año atrás, cuando alguien abandonó a mis gatitas Ela y Mía casi recién nacidas en el umbral de la puerta de mi garaje. Desde entonces un nuevo tipo de “adicción” surgió en mí, hasta el punto de que hoy tengo 7 gatos viviendo en casa.

I have had cats with me since only about four years ago, when someone abandoned my almost newborn kittens Ela and Mia on the threshold of my garage door. Since then a new kind of "addiction" has grown on me, to the point that today I have 7 cats living at home.

Pero varios años antes de que eso ocurriera, ya era frecuente ver un enorme gato de pelaje blanco y naranja sobre los tejados de mi casa y las de los vecinos. En realidad nunca le presté demasiada atención salvo por las veces en las que armaba trifulcas peleando con otros gatos y profiriendo estremecedores maullidos entre combates.

But several years before that, it was already common to see a huge orange and white furred cat on the roofs of my house and those of the neighbours. I never really paid much attention to him except for the times when he would get into fights with other cats and utter shuddering meows between bouts.

Pero cuando comenzamos a tener más gatos en casa, ese “gato grande” comenzó a husmear con más frecuencia por los alrededores de nuestros patios y era frecuente observarlo parado en las cornisas y los aleros mirando a nuestra manada desde arriba.

But when we started having more cats in the house, this "big cat" began to sniff around our yards more frequently and was often seen standing on the ledges and eaves watching our herd from above.

Con el paso del tiempo fue habitual verle durante las tardes, pero siempre se mantenía alejado y receloso, aunque creemos que antes de esterilizar a nuestra gata Ela, ella se escapó con aquel intruso y de allí tuvimos una camada de gatitos hace un par de años atrás. Y eso lo suponemos porque los cuatro bebés gatos eran de colores muy parecidos a los de este gato vagabundo que frecuentaba nuestros tejados y jardines. Esa fue la razón por la cual comenzamos a llamarlo “Pá” que es un diminutivo cariñoso de “Papá”.

As time went on it became common to see him in the evenings, but he was always aloof and wary, although we think that before we had our cat Ela neutered, she ran off with that intruder and from there we had a litter of kittens a couple of years ago. We guessed that because the four baby cats were very similar in colour to this stray cat that frequented our roofs and gardens. That was the reason why we started calling him "Pá" which is an affectionate diminutive of "Papá" (father).

Desde principios de este año Pá ha ido cambiando su actitud hacia nosotros los humanos que habitamos en la casa, en especial conmigo pues soy quien con más frecuencia interactúa con él.

Since the beginning of this year Pá has been changing his attitude towards us humans who live in the house, especially with me as I am the one who interacts with him most often.

Seguí llamándole por el nombre que le colocamos entre nosotros, hasta que un buen día comenzó a maullar cariñosamente respondiendo a mi llamado. Luego, un día como cualquiera, Pá bajó hasta una pared la cual divide nuestros patios y es bastante baja, lo suficiente para que yo pueda alcanzar su parte alta con muy poco esfuerzo. Esa fue la primera vez que Pá se dejó acariciar por mí dejando a un lado su hasta entonces acostumbrada cautela.

I kept calling him by the name we had given him between us, until one fine day he began to meow affectionately in response to my call. Then, one day, just like any other day, Pá went down to a wall which divides our courtyards and is quite low, just enough for me to reach the top of it with very little effort. That was the first time Pá allowed himself to be caressed by me, leaving aside his hitherto customary cautiousness.

Recuerdo haber quedado sorprendido por la cantidad de heridas frescas y cicatrices que tenía en su cuello y parte del rostro. También por las protuberancias y deformaciones de la gruesa piel de su cabeza y cuello, que hacían sentir al tacto alguna semejanza con un casco de guerra abollado.

I remember being surprised by the number of fresh wounds and scars on his neck and part of his face. Also by the protuberances and deformities of the thick skin on his head and neck, which made me feel some resemblance to a dented war helmet.

Ese día comprendí que Pá era un gato callejero y que con mucha frecuencia se veía envuelto en violentas peleas territoriales con otros gatos machos del vecindario. Esta es una conducta típica de los gatos callejeros y eso eleva a tal punto el nivel de riesgo para su salud que según estuve leyendo es raro que bajo esas condiciones superen los 5 años de vida. No así los gatos caseros que pueden sobrepasar los 18 y hasta los 20 años con frecuentemente.

That day I realised that Pá was a stray cat and that he was very often involved in violent territorial fights with other male cats in the neighbourhood. This is a typical behaviour of stray cats and this raises the level of risk to their health to such an extent that, according to what I was reading, it is rare for them to live more than 5 years under these conditions. Not so with house cats who can frequently live to 18 or even 20 years.

Desde entonces Pá y yo hemos establecido una buena relación y es frecuente que salte sobre un viejo depósito de agua que está en nuestro patio y comience a maullar pidiendo su dosis de afecto diario (y también algunas croquetas para gatos).

Since then Pa and I have established a good relationship and he often jumps on an old water tank in our backyard and starts meowing for his daily dose of affection (and also some cat kibble).

Varios meses atrás estuve pensando seriamente en capturar a Pá y llevarlo con nuestra veterinaria para una revisión completa y una cura integral de sus heridas. Pero apenas intenté sostenerlo con ambas manos recibí una franca mordida en una de ellas y Pá salió disparado para no retornar a nuestra casa durante varias semanas. Tantos días pasaron que hasta pensé que podría haber fallecido.

Several months ago I was seriously thinking of capturing Pá and taking him to our vet for a complete check-up and a thorough dressing of his wounds. But as soon as I tried to hold him with both hands I received a sharp bite on one of them and Pa ran off, not to return to our house for several weeks. So many days passed that I even thought he might have died.

Pero una madrugada nuestros perros (una pareja de Jack Russells Terriers) comenzaron a ladrar desaforadamente hacia un rincón del patio interior de nuestra casa (en donde ellos tiene un espacio amplio y seguro). Salí y entonces apunté mi linterna hacia aquel rincón y para mayor sorpresa… ¡allí estaba Pá!... Engrifado y enardecido disparando con sus garras hacia los hocicos de Thor y Mancha (así se llaman mis perros) al mismo tiempo que abría sus fauces y hacía ruidos amenazantes mientras mostraba sus afilados dientes. Tal era la fiereza que demostraba aquel gato, que ninguno de mis perros parecía haber osado acercar su hocico a él, supongo que por miedo a ser alcanzado por un formidable zarpazo.

But one early morning our dogs (a couple of Jack Russells Terriers) started barking wildly towards a corner of the inner courtyard of our house (where they have a large and safe space). I went outside and then pointed my torch into that corner and to my surprise... there was Pa!.... Enraged and enraged, firing his claws at the snouts of Thor and Mancha (that's the name of my dogs) as he opened his jaws and made threatening noises while baring his sharp teeth. Such was the cat's ferocity that none of my dogs seemed to have dared to bring their snouts near him, I suppose for fear of being hit by a formidable claw.

Así que de inmediato los conminé a entrar en una habitación anexa al patio cerrado, la cual hace las veces de perrera y de almacén para algunas cosas de poco uso. Los Jack Russell no son perros fáciles, son pequeños pero extremadamente fuertes e independientes, mantenerlos a raya es toda una proeza de amor y paciencia. Pero son encantadores, llevo más de un cuarto de siglo criándolos.

However, I know how tenacious my dogs are and how bad-tempered they are. So I immediately ordered them into a room adjoining the enclosed courtyard, which serves as a kennel and storage room for a few things of little use. Fortunately they complied after more than a few threatening instructions from me delivered in a loud voice. Jack Russells are not easy dogs, they are small but extremely strong and independent, keeping them in line is a feat of love and patience. But they are lovely, I have been breeding them for over a quarter of a century.

Una vez encerrados mis perros, Pá literalmente “voló” hasta la parte alta de una de las paredes y subió al tejado para después correr raudo en dirección al patio trasero, el cual era el más frecuentado por él durante sus incursiones anteriores y en donde estaría a salvo de mis perros.

Once my dogs were locked up, Pá literally "flew" to the top of one of the walls and climbed onto the roof and then ran off in the direction of the backyard, which he had frequented most often during his previous forays and where he would be safe from my dogs.

A la mañana siguiente Pá estaba ahí, echado sobre el depósito del agua bostezando. Entonces me acerqué y acaricié su maltratado cuello y sus cachetes (eso le encanta)… Desde entonces opté por ayudar a Pá solo en la medida en la que él lo permita, en especial si eso me sirve para ahorrarme algún otro mordisco de su parte. Le di a comer algunas croquetas e hicimos las pases esa vez quizás para siempre.

The next morning Pa was there, lying on the water tank yawning. So I went over and stroked his battered neck and cheeks (he loves that)... From then on I chose to help Pa only as much as he would allow me to, especially if it would save me another bite from him. I fed him some croquettes and we made the passes that time perhaps forever.

Ahora, de vez en cuando, cuando camino por los jardines de casa, suelo escuchar el maullido de Pá avisando que está en el tejado. Entonces yo suelo saludarlo y el comienza a caminar por los bordes de las viejas tejas y se asoma a mirarme y a contestar mi saludo con maullidos y contorsiones de gato consentido. Después a caminando hasta la pared que está al lado del depósito de agua y se lanza sobre este… Allí suelo alimentarlo y hacerle masajes de cuello, pero por nada del mundo he tratado de capturarlo nuevamente desde aquella mordida certera en mi mano.

Now, from time to time, when I walk through the gardens at home, I usually hear Pa meowing to let me know he is on the roof. Then I usually greet him and he starts walking along the edges of the old roof tiles and peeks out to look at me and answer my greeting with meows and contortions of a spoiled cat. Then he walks over to the wall next to the water tank and pounces on it... There I usually feed him and massage his neck, but I haven't tried to catch him since that accurate bite on my hand.

Es común que Pá aparezca siempre con nuevas heridas, inclusive una vez llegó con una pata delantera hinchada y al parecer fracturada. Pero la fortaleza y capacidad de recuperación de este gato parece seguir siendo formidable a pesar de su edad y a los pocos días aparece nuevamente bastante recuperado, aunque con cicatrices.

It is common for Pá to always appear with new injuries, even once he arrived with a swollen and apparently fractured front paw. But the strength and resilience of this cat seems to remain formidable despite his age and within a few days he appears quite recovered, albeit with scars.

Pero sé que Pá se está haciendo viejo y eso me preocupa, yo creo que debe sobrepasar ya los 10 años de edad y eso es muchísimo para un gato cuyas costumbres implican la vida en la calle entre trifulcas y defensas de territorio. Así que me mantengo pendiente de acogerlo entre nosotros apenas él de señales de no poder seguir adelante siendo el “gato Alfa del vecindario”…

But I know that Pá is getting old and that worries me, I think he must be over 10 years old and that's a lot for a cat whose habits involve life in the street between fights and defending his territory. So I'm keeping an eye on taking him in as soon as he shows signs of not being able to continue being the "Alpha cat of the neighbourhood"...

Ya tengo un enorme galpón que colinda con uno de nuestros patios y puede servir para acoger a Pá sin que tenga que convivir directamente con nuestra manada (pues Ela y Mía no son precisamente gatas amistosas y dóciles y suelen defender su espacio juntas y créanme, son verdaderas fieras en miniatura).

I already have a huge shed that adjoins one of our patios and can be used to welcome Pá without him having to live directly with our herd (as Ela and Mia are not exactly friendly and docile cats and tend to defend their space together and believe me, they are real miniature wild beasts).

Ya he puesto agua y croquetas a Pá en ese lugar que tengo pensado para que pernocte o descanse cuando comience a sentirse viejo, pero hasta el momento solo lo he encontrado allí un par de veces. Supongo que con el tiempo lo frecuentará más seguidamente.

I have already put water and kibble for Pa in that place I have in mind for him to sleep or rest when he starts to feel old, but so far I have only met him there a couple of times. I guess he'll be frequenting it more often as time goes by.

Y bien, esta ha sido a grandes rasgos mi historia con “Pá”, ese cabezón y pendenciero gato callejero, el cual ha develado paulatinamente una tipo de ternura y de complicidad poco común… Sea como sea, ya "Pá" es “parte de nuestra manada”…

So, this has been my story with "Pá", that big-headed and quarrelsome stray cat, who has gradually revealed a kind of tenderness and uncommon complicity... Anyway, "Pá" is already "part of our pack"...
