The old dam in the northwest of Montalbán (Venezuela) town (📷 01), just where the mountains begin to rise, was created in the mid-twentieth century as I heard my grandparents and parents always narrate. It is a small dam, because our river is narrow and even today it tends to dry up in some very dry years. But for those times its flow was enough to satisfy the needs of the town's population and even to irrigate some fields on both sides of its course. This dam and the aqueduct attached to it fulfilled their function until the beginning of this century, when the combination of various factors such as lack of government maintenance, contamination by unscrupulous people, indiscriminate logging of the forests that feed the basin up the mountain and annual fires, ended up reducing its functionality to the minimum expression...

La vieja presa en el noroeste del pueblo (📷 01), justo en donde comienzan a alzarse las montañas, fue creada a mediados del siglo XX según escuché narrar a mis abuelos y padres siempre. Es una presa pequeña, pues el cause de nuestro río es angosto es incluso hoy por hoy suele secarse en algunos años muy secos. Pero para aquellos tiempo su caudal corría todo el año y bastaba para satisfacer las necesidades de la población del pueblo e incluso para regar algunos terrenos de siembra a lado y lado de su recorrido. Esta presa y el acueducto anexo a ella cumplieron su función hasta principios de siglo, cuando la suma de diversos factores como falta de mantenimiento gubernamental, contaminación por parte de personas inescrupulosas, la tala indiscriminada de los bosques que alimentan la cuenca montaña arriba y los incendios anuales, terminaron por disminuir la funcionalidad de esto a su mínima expresión....

However, in recent days I learned thanks to the social networks of the local mayor's office that some repair work had begun on the aqueduct tank and even the road (📷 02 and 03) which leads to this place had been repaired to facilitate the arrival of materials and work crews. So I decided to get up early and take advantage of a morning to make a long exploratory hike to the site...

Sin embargo, en días pasados supe gracias las redes sociales de la oficina de la alcaldía local qué se habían comenzado algunos trabajos de reparación en el tanque del acueducto e incluso se había reparado el camino (📷 02 y 03) que lleva hacia este lugar para facilitar el arribo de materiales y cuadrillas de trabajadores. Así que decidí levantarme temprano y aprovechar una mañana para hacer una larga caminata exploratoria al lugar...

The road leaves behind the paved streets of the town and enters into more wooded and country areas along a gentle slope; it is a pleasant route for exercise and thanks to recent maintenance work it is clean and safe to travel. After a little less than 1 kilometer I could see the old office of the drinking water company (📷 04), which is still as abandoned as it has been since the early 2000's when the staff that worked there left to never come back. To tell the truth, the only noticeable change is the new roof over the main tank of the aqueduct (📷 05) and a relatively large stream of fresh water falling into the tank (📷 06) which by the way does not seem to come from the river as it is in the opposite direction to the river. So it is surely an inflow of water from deep underground wells in lower areas of the valley. The good thing about this first look, was that I confirmed that finally and after so many years of neglect, some of our local authorities are working on solving part of the problem of availability of drinking water in our town...

El camino deja atrás las calles pavimentadas del pueblo y se adentra hacia áreas más boscosas y campestres a lo largo de una suave pendiente; es un trayecto agradable para ejercitarse y gracias a los trabajos de mantenimiento recientes está limpio y luce seguro para transitar. Después de poco menos de 1 kilómetro pude observar las viejas dependencias de la oficina del la compañía de agua potable (📷 04), las cuales siguen tan abandonadas como lo ha estado desde principios de los 2000 cuando el personal que allí laboraba se marchó para no volver más. A decir verdad, el único cambio perceptible es el nuevo techo sobre el tanque principal del acueducto (📷 05) y un relativamente caudaloso chorro de agua fresca cayendo dentro del tanque (📷 06) el cual por cierto no parece venir del río pues está en dirección contraria a este. Así que seguramente se trata de un surtido de agua proveniente de pozos profundos en áreas bajas del valle. Lo bueno de este primer vistazo, fue que confirmé que finalmente y después de tantos años de abandono, algunas de nuestras autoridades locales están trabajando en solucionar parte del problema de disponibilidad de agua potable en nuestro pueblo...

I was surprised to see that all the pipes coming from the dam were not pouring water into the main tank of the aqueduct (📷 07)... So I assumed that the repair works had not yet reached a stage where this was possible... I left the huge concrete tank behind and walked onto the path (📷 09) that would eventually lead me into the forest and within it to the riverbed and the small dam. A couple of hundred meters further on I found the filtering and sand removal structure (📷 10) which had a new and apparently recently installed manual valve (📷 11), this confirmed to me that the repair work also included supplying the aqueduct tank with water from the dam...

Me extrañó ver que la totalidad de ductos provenientes de la presa no estaban vertiendo agua en el tanque principal del acueducto (📷 07) Así que supuse que los trabajos de reparación aún no habían llegado a una fase en la que esto fuese posible... Dejé atrás el enorme tanque de concreto y me adentré en el sendero (📷 09) que finalmente me llevaría al bosque y dentro de este al cause del río y la pequeña presa. Un par de centenares de metros más adelante encontré la estructura de filtrado y eliminación de arena (📷 10) la cual tenía una nueva y al parecer recién instalada válvula manual (📷 11), esto me confirmó que los trabajos de reparación también incluyen el proveer el tanque del acueducto con agua proveniente de la presa...

I learned through the social networks of our local mayor's office, that unscrupulous people had tried to start taking as their own parts of the wooded land around the river (📷 12) and that they would have to be expelled by the authorities on threat of being sued by the municipality for environmental damage... Fortunately, the “entrance” to the narrow path leading to the dam, which is surrounded by a grove of dense bamboo of a low species, was immaculate as I remembered it from my last visit (📷 13)...

Supe por las redes sociales de nuestra alcaldía local, que personas inescrupulosas habían intentado comenzar a tomar como propias partes del terreno boscoso alrededor del río (📷 12) y que las mismas habían tenido que ser expulsadas por las autoridades so pena de sufrir una demanda por parte del municipio por daños al medio ambiente... Afortunadamente la "entrada" al angosto sendero que lleva a la presa, el cual está rodeado por un bosquecillo de tupidos bambúes de una especie de poca altura, estaba inmaculada tal como yo la recordaba desde mi ultima venida (📷 13)...

After a hundred meters inside the nice vegetal tunnel (📷 14) you can already spot the old pipes coming from the dam which are maybe about 80 years old but still resisting the passage of time apparently quite well (📷 15 and 16) So it is almost certain that they will be working again soon.... 💦

Después de un centenar de metros dentro del lindo túnel vegetal (📷 14) ya se avistan las viejas tuberías provenientes de la presa las cuales tendrán quizás cerca de 80 años de antigüedad pero siguen resistiendo el paso del tiempo al parecer bastante bien (📷 15 y 16) Así que es casi seguro que pronto estarán trabajando nuevamente... 💦

A few meters below the wall that supports the pipe, there are still two huge rocks (📷 17 and 18) uncovered thanks to the flow of the river when it overtopped the dam or by the jet of the relief valve (📷 20) that used to remain open in the rainy season. When I was a teenager, I liked to come here in times of low flow and go down to the riverbed (📷 19) to follow it until reaching the town jumping from stone to stone with all the energy of youth... How things have changed!... This time I didn't even dare to go down to the dry riverbed! 😂

Pocos metros más abajo del muro que soporta la tubería, siguen estando dos enormes rocas (📷 17 y 18) descubiertas gracias al caudal del río cuando sobrepasaba la presa o por el chorro de la válvula de alivio (📷 20) que solía permanecer abierta en temporada de lluvias. Siendo yo un adolescente, me gustaba venir aquí en épocas de poco caudal y descender al cauce del río (📷 19) para seguirlo hasta llegar al pueblo saltando de piedra en piedra con toda la energía propia de la juventud... ¡Como han cambiado las cosas!... ¡Esta vez ni siquiera me he atrevido a descender al cauce! 😂

One of my super powers acquired with the arrival of my middle age is to be “claustrophobic” 😂, so the narrow passage (📷 21) formed by a hill and the structure of the dam, seemed to me a not pleasant place at all. And after passing through there, I found myself standing at the edge of the water repository (📷 22) immediately activating another one of my super powers which is to feel “dizziness” 😂... Good heavens, I love walking in nature, but I sure am allergic to all kinds of risks! 😂... Well, but I have to say that it was all totally worth it, as the sight of the water reservoir (📷 23 and 24) formed between two steeply sloping hills (📷 25) was lovely for me to watch....

Uno de mis super poderes adquiridos con la llegada de mi edad madura es ser "claustrofóbico" 😂, así que el angosto pasadizo (📷 21) formado por una colina y la estructura de la presa, me pareció un lugar nada agradable. Y luego de pasar por allí, me encontré de pie al borde del repositorio de agua (📷 22) activando de inmediato otro de mis super poderes el cual es sentir "vértigo" 😂... ¡Santos cielos, amo pasear por la naturaleza, pero sí que soy alérgico a todo tipo de riesgos! 😂... Bién, pero tengo que decir que todo esto valió la pena totalmente, pues la visión del reservorio de agua (📷 23 y 24) formado entre dos colinas de pronunciada pendiente (📷 25) me resultó encantadora de observar...

I carefully descended from the edge of the dam (📷 26) and wandered back into the narrow vegetation tunnel that led me there (📷 27) to finally reach the clearing on the road back to the village (📷 28)... Right in front of the abandoned offices of the drinking water company, the view of the almost flat space with the shade of large mango trees (📷 29) mentally transported me back to my childhood, when I used to come here to camp or even attend Boy Scout meetings... Yes, certainly this was a very suitable place for that and I think it still is.

Descendí con cuidado desde borde de la presa (📷 26) y me adentré de nuevo en el angosto túnel vegetal que me llevó hasta allí (📷 27) para finalmente llegar al claro en el camino de retorno al pueblo (📷 28)... Justo en frente de las oficinas abandonadas de la compañía de agua potable, la vista del espacio casi plano con la sombra de grandes árboles de mango (📷 29) me transportó mentalmente a mi niñez, cuando solía venir aquí a acampar o incluso asistir a las reuniones de niños exploradores... Sí, ciertamente este era un lugar muy adecuado para eso y creo que lo sigue siendo.
