My father would sometimes respectfully comment on some of my street photography, saying something like, "You like taking a lot of dystopian photos," and over the years that statement stuck with me... "Dystopia" wasn't the only word Dad used to describe some of my photos; he would also use more ambiguous terms like "distorted" or "crooked," and he didn't mean it in a derogatory way. On the contrary, he liked these kinds of photos because they were closely related to the type of painting he enjoyed creating and viewing (Dad painted in oils on canvas and occasionally on wood; he also carved wood and even served as a critic or juror at local art exhibitions and similar events)... So, coming from my father, this reference to some of my photos was more of an interesting and motivating compliment...

Mi padre, en ciertas ocasiones, acostumbraba a decir con respeto a algunas de mis fotografías callejeras algo así como: Te gusta hacer muchas fotos distópicas" y con el paso de los años esa afirmación quedó grabada en mi mente... "Distopía" no era lo único que Papá utilizaba para describir a algunas de mis fotos, sino que también podía usar términos más ambiguos como "contrahechas" o "torcidas", y no lo decía de manera despectiva, por el contrario, le gustaban este tipo de fotos ya que las mismas tenían mucho que ver con el tipo de pintura que a él le gustaba hacer y ver (Papá pintaba al oleo sobre tela y ocasionalmente retablos, también tallaba madera e incluso fungía como crítico o jurado en exhibiciones artísticas locales y eventos por el estilo)... Así que, viniendo de mi padre, esta referencia a cita parte de mis fotos, era más bien una interesante y motivador halago...

From my own particular way of thinking and understanding my photographic work, I often try to categorize some of my street photographs within a broader concept of "dystopia." Mentally, I include photos that go beyond simply depicting a space, reflecting a harsh and complex reality, or even an ugly vision, as many of these are. I broaden this spectrum to include photos with complex, irrational, or challenging compositions. I also include some photos with blurriness, complex technical flaws, and so on. But what is undeniable and constant here is that these photos have some kind of meaning and message for me, and I believe for those who view them as well.

Yo, desde mi particular manera de pensar y entender mi trabajo fotográfico, con frecuencia intento encasillar algunas de mis fotografías callejeras dentro de un concepto más amplio de "distopía" y mentalmente incluyo fotos que van más allá de un espacio reflejando una realidad dura y compleja, o incluso una visión desprolija como lo son muchas acá, y amplío el espectro de esto a fotos con composiciones complejas, irracionales o desafiantes, también incluyo en esto algunas fotos con desenfoques, complejas falencias técnicas y así por el estilo. Pero lo indudable y constante aquí en esto, es que esas fotos tienen algún tipo de significado y mensaje para mi y creo que para quien las observe también...

My 80-year-old mother, a retired teacher, loves my landscape photos and, in general, all those "relatively beautiful" photos whose elements and concepts fall within the standard of pleasing aesthetics. However, she does have some reservations about my dystopian street photography, although she perfectly understands my intention in taking these photos and what I want to convey through them... But, regarding my two younger sisters—one a retired reporter and the other a retired administrator, both currently running their own livestock and dairy businesses—their opinions on this type of photography are frankly hilarious 😂 and they don't hesitate to say things like, "We know when you've suffered some kind of dehydration and heatstroke, because you start posting really strange photos" 😂... But I find that very funny...

Mi madre, una matrona de 80 años y profesora retirada, ama mis fotos de paisajes y en general todas aquellas fotos "relativamente bonitas" cuyos elementos y conceptos estén dentro del estándar de una visión agradable. Pero sí que tiene ciertas reservas para con este tipo de mis fotos callejeras de carácter distópico, aunque entiende perfectamente cual es mi intención al hacer fotos así y lo que quiero transmitir a través de ellas... Con respecto a mis dos hermanas menores, una reportera retirada y la otra administradora también retira, y ambas actualmente con sus propios negocios de ganado y productos lácteos, sus opiniones respecto a este tipo de trabajos fotográficos hechos por mi, francamente bordean lo hilarante 😂 y no se privan en decir frases jocosas como: "Sabemos cuando has sufrido algún tipo de deshidratación e insolación, porque comienzas a publicar fotos realmente extrañas" 😂... Pero a mi me parece eso muy gracioso...

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7}
