Hello friends at #hive!... How are you all doing?.... Perhaps those of you who follow my posts here have noticed an unusual "bug abundance" in my recent posts (which used to be mostly about street photography and stories).... Well it's true, I've been "filling up with bugs" and that has a lot to do with the onset of the rainy season and the miserable heat and extreme humidity that come along with it..... It seems that this unbearable weather is making bugs pop up everywhere!

¡Hola amigos en #hive!... ¿Que tal están todos?... Quizás aquellos que siguen mis publicaciones aquí, se han percatado de una inusitada "abundancia de insectos" en mis publicaciones recientes (las cuales solían ser en su mayoría sobre fotografía callejera e historias)... Bien es cierto, me he estado "llenando de bichos" y eso tiene mucho que ver con el comienzo de la temporada de lluvias y el miserable calor y humedad extrema que vienen incluidos junto con ella.... ¡Parece que este clima insoportable hace que los insectos aparezcan por doquier!.

The story of this is a bit more complicated than it seems, as it turns out that about fifteen years ago I became interested in macro photography and especially insect photography... and... Have I told you that I suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder?... Well, I do tend to become obsessed with something from one moment to the next and without any explanation or reasonable reason.

La historia de esto es un poco más complicada de lo que parece, pues resulta que unos quince años atrás comencé a interesarme por la fotografía macro y muy especialmente por la de insectos... y... ¿Les he contado acaso que sufro de trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo?... Bien, pues sí suelo obsesionarme con algo de un momento a otro y sin explicación ni motivo razonable.

Let's continue with my story then: I think it was between 2008 and 2009 when I started taking pictures of insects in the region where I live. At the same time I started to invest long hours in taxonomy websites, virtual collections, species lists and the like. My intention was to classify each species I photographed.... Believe me, I managed to find the ID of many of them!

Sigamos con mi historia entonces: Creo que fue entre 2008 y 2009 cuando comencé a hacer fotos de insectos de la región en donde vivo. Al mismo tiempo comencé a invertir largas horas en paginas de taxonomía, colecciones virtuales, listas de especies y afines. Mi intención era la de clasificar cada especie que fotografiaba... ¡Créanme, logré dar con el ID de muchas de ellas!.

I also got in touch with dozens of arthropod specialists, entomologists and the like in Venezuela and other parts of the world.... That's how I ended up spending my weekends (because at that time I was working in a company from Monday to Friday) photographing insects and I used to go to bed very late with my nose to my PC trying to find their scientific names.

También llegué a contactar con docenas de especialistas en artrópodos, entomólogos y similares en Venezuela y en otras partes del mundo... Así fue como terminé invirtiendo mis fines de semana (pues en aquel entonces trabajaba en una empresa de lunes a viernes) en fotografiar insectos y solía acostarme a dormir muy tarde con las narices en mi PC intentando dar con sus nombres científicos.

So it was that after a while, a hobby that was initially intended to "relax and deal with stress" ended up becoming a "slight problem" ("slight" is an understatement, if you ask my wife she will tell you that I went crazy and took pictures even of flies and ants in our kitchen).... But that's something I'm used to doing with almost everything!.... I get passionate about things, I do them, I keep doing them, each time with more and more enthusiasm and suddenly, BAM!... I stop doing them for no reason!

Así fue como luego de un tiempo, una afición cuya intención inicial era la de "relajarme y lidiar con el stress" terminó por convertirse en un "ligero problema" ("ligero" es un eufemismo, sí le preguntan a mi esposa ella les dirá que enloquecí y tomaba fotos hasta de moscas y hormigas en nuestra cocina)... ¡Pero eso es algo que acostumbro a hacer con casi todo!... Me apasiono con las cosas, las hago, las sigo haciendo, cada vez con más ahínco y repentinamente ¡ZAS!... ¡Dejo de hacerlo sin motivo alguno!.

Well, fortunately, after a couple of years of "unhealthy addiction to photographing and classifying bugs" I stopped doing it.... But I've relapsed! haaaa haaaa haaaa haaaaaaa! :) ... And again my wife is watching me with a frown on her face as she passes by my studio and sees all these butterfly pictures on my PC screen!... But that's good for you, because I can share these pictures!... Besides, I'm older now and I need more sleep, I also endure less time in the inclement sun!... So I guess this time everything will be more manageable...I just hope my old entomologist friends won't notice me again taking these pictures!... haaa haaa haaa haaa... :)

Y bien, afortunadamente, después de un par de años de "insana adicción por fotografiar y clasificar bichos" dejé de hacerlo... ¡Pero he recaido! haaaa haaaa haaaaa! :) ... ¡Y nuevamente mi esposa está observándome con el entrecejo fruncido mientras pasa por mi estudio y ve todas estas fotos de mariposas en la pantalla de mi PC!... ¡Pero eso es bueno para ustedes, porque puedo compartir estas fotos!... ¡Además, ahora estoy más viejo y necesito dormir más, también soporto menos tiempo bajo el sol inclemente!... Así que supongo que esta vez todo será más manejable...¡Solo espero que mis viejos amigos entomólogos no se percaten de estoy de nuevo haciendo estas fotos!... haaa haaa haaa... :)

All the pictures in this publication were taken between yesterday and today, so they are "fresh butterflies". I also included a picture of a nice caterpillar and another one of a weevil (this one as a bonus shot at the end of the article)... Here the diversity is enormous and I know from experience that I will be able to take pictures of insects whenever I want until about the first days of December, when the rains have stopped and the dry season begins.

Todas las fotografías de esta publicación fueron realizadas entre ayer y hoy, así que son "mariposas frescas". También incluí una foto de una linda oruga y otra de un gorgojo (esta como "bonus shot" al final del articulo)... Aquí la diversidad es enorme y sé por experiencia que podré hacer fotografías de insectos cada vez que lo desee hasta aproximadamente los primeros días de Diciembre, cuando las lluvias hayan cesado y comience la temporada seca.

At the moment I haven't felt like starting to look into the ID of the ones I'm photographing this year.... But I'm sure at any moment I'll check my records and I'll be able to find information there to identify some... Hopefully I won't get bogged down in hours and hours of searching again!.... ;)

Por los momentos no he sentido deseos de comenzar a indagar acerca del ID de las que estoy fotografiando este año... Pero seguramente en cualquier momento revisaré mis registros y podre encontrar información allí para identificar algunas... ¡Espero no volver a enfrascarme en búsquedas de horas y horas!... ;)

I started this year going out to take insect photos only with my Tokina ATX-PRO 100mm f/2.8 d MACRO lens which allows me to take very attractive and quite detailed photos... However the 100mm focal length of this lens makes it necessary to be relatively close to the insect being photographed, but some species of butterflies are much more nervous than others and photographing them at 30 or 40 cm distance is not possible. So for the photos in this article, I also took with me and used from time to time my AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens which allows me to shoot with its 300mm focal length at about 1,5 mts from the subject.... That helps a lot, although the sharpness of the details tends to diminish a bit in some photos.

Comencé este año saliendo a hacer fotos de insectos solamente con mi lente Tokina ATX-PRO 100mm f/2.8 d MACRO el cual me permite fotos muy atractivas y bastante detalladas... Sin embargo los 100mm de distancia focal de este objetivo, hacen que sea necesario estar relativamente cerca del insecto fotografiado, pero algunas especies de mariposas son mucho más nerviosas que otras y fotografiarlas a 30 o 40 cm de distancia no es posible. Así que para las fotos de este articulo, también llevé conmigo y utilicé de vez en cuando mi lente AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR el cual me permite disparar con sus 300mm de distancia focal a unos 1,5 mts del sujeto fotografiado... ¡Eso ayuda mucho!, aunque la nitidez de los detalles suele disminuir un poco en algunas fotos.

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.

NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografiar capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape 3.6.3.
