From noon yesterday until well into this afternoon, we have had heavy rains here in Montalbán, and these have been accompanied by the already common and respective power outages, absolute failures in internet services, some landslides on the highways that obstructed one of the accesses to the town, and even a small river increased its flow and caused some havoc in nearby farms and hamlets. These are the consequences of continuous rain for practically 36 hours in a town which, for some time now, has not been fully prepared to face this type of event. And if we add to this the remaining psychological impact on people since the past seismic event of last June 24th, it is easy to understand why the streets of the town today at noon seemed lonely, quiet, and too wet and worn out. So, the only thing I could think of doing to avoid boredom and a possible attack of depression was to go into my studio and dedicate myself (thanks to having a small gasoline power generator) to looking at, processing, and editing photos from the first months of the year, when we were still in the dry season and the surrounding landscapes offered more cheerful views to photograph...

Desde el mediodía de ayer hasta bien entrada la tarde de hoy, hemos tenido intensas lluvias aquí en Montalbán, y estas han venido acompañadas de los ya comunes y respectivos cortes de energía eléctrica, fallas absolutas en los servicios de internet, algunos derrumbes en las carreteras que obstruyeron uno de los accesos al pueblo e incluso un pequeño río incrementó su caudal e hizo algunos estragos en granjas y caseríos cercanos. Son las consecuencias de lluvias continuas durante prácticamente 36 horas en un pueblo el cual, desde hace ya tiempo, no está del todo preparado para afrontar este tipo de eventos. Y si a esto se le suma el impacto psicológico remanente en las personas desde el pasado evento sísmico del pasado 24 de junio, es fácil entender por qué las calles del pueblo hoy al mediodía parecían solitarias, calladas y demasiado húmedas y desgastadas. Entonces, lo único que se me ocurrió hacer para evitar el tedio y un posible ataque de depresión fue entrar en mi estudio y dedicarme (gracias a tener un pequeño generador de energía a gasolina) a mirar, procesar y editar fotos de los primeros meses del año, cuando todavía estábamos en estación seca y los paisajes de los alrededores regalaban vistas más alegres para fotografiar...

While looking at and working on these photos, I couldn't help but think things like, "Wow, how I miss dry days!" or even, "Geez, at almost 55, I can't help but hate days with heavy rain, when everything is damp and gray!" 😂... Well, it seems I'm finally getting old!... And I say this because, until about 15 or 20 years ago, I really loved rainy days. I mean, I used to wear waterproof boots and appropriate clothing to go for walks in the countryside in the rain, climb mountains, and (unbelievably) do crazy things like riding a motorcycle through the downpours. But all that has changed, I admit. And perhaps it's not about my physical condition, which is still relatively good, but about my emotional state, I suppose, and about observing and becoming increasingly aware of the problems and shortcomings in this town and, consequently, in many of its inhabitants. This is something that undoubtedly changes the way you act and react to such a complex daily life...

Mientras miraba y trabajaba en estas fotos, no pude evitar pensar cosas como: «¡Vaya, cómo extraño los días secos!» o incluso: «¡Cielos, a mis casi 55 años, no puedo evitar odiar los días con fuertes lluvias, cuando todo está húmedo y gris!». 😂... Bueno, ¡parece que finalmente me estoy haciendo viejo!... Y digo esto porque, hasta hace unos 15 o 20 años, realmente amaba los días lluviosos. Es decir, solía usar botas impermeables y ropa adecuada para salir a caminar por el campo bajo la lluvia, escalar montañas y (por increíble que parezca) hacer locuras como andar en motocicleta bajo los aguaceros. Pero todo eso ha cambiado, lo admito. Y tal vez no se trate de mi condición física, que todavía es relativamente buena, sino de mi estado emocional, supongo, y de observar y ser cada vez más consciente de los problemas y deficiencias de este pueblo y, en consecuencia, de muchos de sus habitantes. Esto es algo que sin duda cambia la forma de actuar y reaccionar ante una vida cotidiana tan compleja...

It's curious, but this photographic look at what I call a "RECENT PAST" has also made me travel back to the first days of January of this year, when the events that occurred made the vast majority of the local population feel frankly hopeful. However, few things have changed in the town since then. I mean things like basic services, the availability of medicines in medical centers and hospitals, the fuel supply, the feeling that inflation continues to devour the value of the little money we earn, and so on... Perhaps the only fact of "consolation" that ordinary people have here is that there is no longer the risk of being detained and/or imprisoned for complaining in public, or that it no longer happens that people, uniformed or not, can treat us with contempt and constantly intimidate others for their political preferences, or confiscate your mobile phone, your vehicle, or anything... Yes, those kinds of things haven't happened since January of this year, that's true. But it is also true that everyone expected improvements in the quality of life of ordinary people, and that has not happened, or is happening very, very slowly; at least that's how it is here in this town, which can literally "shut down" due to a few hours of heavy rain...

Es curioso, pero esta mirada fotográfica a lo que llamo un «PASADO RECIENTE» me ha hecho volver también a los primeros días de enero de este año, cuando los eventos ocurridos hicieron que la gran mayoría de la población local se sintiese francamente esperanzada. Sin embargo, pocas cosas han cambiado desde entonces en el pueblo. Me refiero a cosas como los servicios básicos, la disponibilidad de medicamentos en las medicaturas y hospitales, el surtido de combustible, la sensación de que la inflación sigue devorando el valor del poco dinero que ganamos y así sucesivamente... Quizás el único hecho de «consolación» que tienen las personas de a pie aquí es que ya no existe el riesgo de ser detenido y/o encarcelado por quejarse en público, o que ya no ocurre que personas, uniformadas o no, puedan tratarnos con desprecio y amedrentar constantemente a otros por sus preferencias políticas, o decomisar tu móvil, tu vehículo o cualquier cosa... Sí, ese tipo de cosas ya no pasan desde enero de este año, eso es cierto. Pero también es cierto que todos esperaban mejoras en la calidad de vida del común de las personas y eso no ha ocurrido, o va ocurriendo de manera muy pero muy lenta; cuando menos así es aquí en este pueblo, el cual puede literalmente «apagarse» a causa de unas cuantas horas de lluvia intensa...

Anyway, hopefully the rest of the rainy months will not bring us too many gray days, because this small town, its streets, its fields, and its people might already be in need of blue skies, with fresh winds, sun that illuminates without burning the skin, and better things happening to everyone...

Como sea, ojalá el resto de los meses de lluvia no nos traigan demasiados días grises, porque puede que ya este pequeño pueblo, sus calles, sus campos y su gente estén necesitando cielos azules, con vientos frescos, un sol que ilumine sin quemar la piel y mejores cosas ocurriendo para todos...
