This is a photographic series based on images of rural properties south of the town of Montalbán (Carabobo St., Venezuela) during the mornings when very dense fog settles in the valley where the municipality is located. This is a recurring phenomenon throughout much of the year in this region and—as always when it comes to fog—offers an excellent atmosphere for capturing this type of photography, which can range from abstract to minimalist depending on the visual elements utilized.

Esta es una serie fotográfica basada en imágenes de los predios rurales al Sur del pueblo de Montalbán (Carabobo St., Venezuela) durante las mañanas en las cuales nieblas muy densas se asientan en el valle en donde está ese municipio. Este es un fenómeno recurrente durante buena parte del año en esta región y -como siempre cuando se trata de nieblas- ofrece una atmósfera excelente para capturar este tipo de fotos que pueden ir desde lo abstracto hasta lo minimalista según sean los elementos visuales que se aprovechan...

Due to the virtually complete disappearance of the horizon in these weather conditions, it's necessary to take advantage of and rely on things in the foreground to achieve interesting photographs. In my case, I tend to rely heavily on the barbed wire fences always present along the sides of the road and on the road itself as the main elements to highlight the images. Obviously, the best approach here is to capture everything in RAW and try to achieve a photo relatively faithful to what is seen with the naked eye, then make adjustments with restrained processing that respects the soft contrasts, subdued colors, and visually uncertain backgrounds typical of photos taken in the thickest fog.

Ante la prácticamente absoluta desaparición del horizonte en estas condiciones climáticas, entonces es necesario aprovechar y apoyarse en las cosas que se tienen en primer plano, con la finalidad de logar fotografías interesantes. En mi caso, suelo apoyarme mucho con las alambradas siempre existentes en las orillas del camino y en el camino mismo como elementos principales para protagonizar las imágenes. Obviamente, lo mejor aquí es capturar todo en RAW y procurar lograr una foto relativamente fiel a lo que se ve al ojo desnudo, para después hacer ajustes con un procesado comedido que respete los contrastes suaves, los colores atenuados y los fondos visualmente inciertos, propios de las fotos hechas en medio de las nieblas más densas.

I usually shoot this type of photography using very bright lenses, usually with fixed focal lengths and wide apertures. The important thing here is to be able to maneuver as best as possible in these low-light conditions. For this particular series, I used a 100mm fixed lens, which might seem inadequate due to its limited angle of view. But the truth is that, knowing where to position yourself, you can achieve satisfactory results, taking advantage of all the available light.

Acostumbro a hacer este tipo de trabajos fotográficos utilizando objetivos muy claros, por lo general de focal fija y con amplias aperturas de diafragma. Pues, lo importante aquí es poder maniobrar lo mejor posible en estas condiciones de poca luz. Para esta serie en particular, utilicé un objetivo fijo de 100mm, cosa la cual podría parecer inadecuada debido a su limitado ángulo de visión. Pero la verdad es que, sabiendo donde posicionarse, se pueden obtener resultados satisfactorios, aprovechado toda la luz disponible.
