Today I had one of those mornings that my father used to call "comedy mornings"... I woke up around 5:30 AM and a few minutes later I was in the kitchen making some coffee and thinking about what to make for everyone's breakfast at home (today it's my turn to make breakfast)...

Hoy he tenido una mañana de esas las cuales mi padre llamaba "mañanas de comedia"... Me he despertado cerca de las 5:30 AM y pocos minutos después me encontraba en la cocina preparando un poco de café y pensando en que hacer para el desayuno de todos en casa (hoy me toca a mi hacer el desayuno)...

Just a few minutes after waking up I noticed the high ambient temperature. These have been really hot days and it is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 34°C with a higher thermal sensation due to the high humidity level and the almost total absence of wind.

Apenas unos minutos después de despertar me percaté de la alta temperatura ambiental que había. Estos han sido días verdaderamente calurosos y no es extraño que las temperaturas sobrepasen los 34°C con una sensación térmica mayor debido al alto nivel de humedad y la casi total ausencia de viento.

I watched my wife leave the room stretching her arms to wake up as she walked towards the bathroom. A few minutes later she appeared in our kitchen, greeted me with a good morning, poured herself a cup of coffee and without any compunction said: "We have a small pot of water in the dishwasher pipe, try to check it today"... I remained silent and without answering anything about it, but internally I was terrified to imagine myself lying inside that tiny space trying to fix a pipe with an absolutely unbearable temperature and with almost no air to breathe in there. So I just answered: "It's so hot today, the news says it's going to be hotter than yesterday".

Observé a mi esposa salir de la habitación estirando sus brazos para desperezarse mientras caminaba en dirección al baño. Pocos minutos después hizo acto de presencia en nuestra cocina me saludó dando los buenos días, se sirvió una taza con café y sin remilgo alguno dijo: "Tenemos un pequeño bote de agua en la tubería del lavaplatos, procura revisarlo hoy"... Yo me quedé en silencio y sin responder nada al respecto, pero internamente me aterroricé de tan solo imaginarme tumbado dentro de aquel minúsculo espacio intentando arreglar una tubería con una temperatura absolutamente insoportable y sin casi aire para respirar allí. Así que tan solo respondí: "Vaya calor tenemos hoy, el noticiero dice que será un día más caliente que ayer"...

A few minutes later my youngest daughter (25 years old) appeared on the threshold of the kitchen door and without saying good morning or even asking for my blessing (a very ingrained custom in our country, by the way) she told me point blank: "Dad, my scooter is sounding a little strange, remember to check it today".... For a moment I was tempted to ask if I was being a victim of one of those "hidden camera" programs where the accomplices start acting in an absurd and unbearable way until the victim explodes, but I restrained myself and set out to pack breakfast for my mother and go to take it to her house, which is right next to ours and they share backyards, so just "cross the yard" and be there at my mother's house right away.

Pocos minutos después apareció mi hija menos (25 años) en el umbral de la puerta de la cocina y sin dar los buenos días ni pedir siquiera mi bendición (una costumbre muy arraigada en nuestro país, por cierto) me dijo a quemarropa: "Papá, mi scooter está sonando un poco extraño recuerda revisarla hoy"... Por un momento estuve tentado a preguntar sí acaso estaba siendo victima de uno de esos programas de "cámara escondida" en donde los cómplices comienzan a actuar de manera absurda e insoportable hasta hace estallar a la victima, pero me contuve y me dispuse a colocar en viandas el desayuno para mi madre e ir a llevárselo a su casa, la cual está justo al lado de la nuestra y comparten patios traseros, así que es tan solo "cruzar el patio" y estar allí en la casa de mi madre de inmediato.

As I crossed between our courtyards I could not help but be amazed at the intense heat that could be experienced despite it being a relatively early morning hour. I didn't want to imagine how high the temperature would be then as noon and afternoon approached. Surely today we will break another heat record in town (we have already broken several records this year).

Mientras cruzaba entre nuestros patios no podía dejar de asombrarme por el intenso calor que se podía experimentar a pesar de ser una hora relativamente temprana de la mañana. No quise imaginarme cuan alta sería la temperatura entonces al acercarse el mediodía y la tarde. Seguramente hoy se batirá otro récord de calor registrado en el pueblo (ya este año llevamos varias marcas superadas).

Upon entering my mother's house, I immediately noticed her sitting in her dining room sipping her coffee. After saying good morning to me and blessing me (my mother is a kind of "matron" strictly attached to good manners and good customs, she is also a retired teacher, so she can be a bit bombastic when she speaks, but she is a very tender woman of solid convictions).... She said to me in a sweet but taxingly compromising voice: "The grass is high and some tree branches need to be trimmed, you should do it today"... Fuck it, I almost fainted from the shock!... It seems that everyone in my family is in cahoots to make me work today!... Don't they realize that we are in the middle of a damned "heat dome"?

Al entrar en casa de mi madre, de inmediato la observé sentada en su comedor bebiendo un sorbo de café. Después de darme los buenos días y bendecirme (mi madre es una especie de "matrona" apegada estrictamente a los buenos modales y las buenas costumbres, además es profesora retirada, así que puede resultar un tanto ampulosa cuando habla, pero es una mujer muy tierna aunque de sólidas convicciones)... Ella me dijo con voz dulce pero taxativamente comprometedora: "El césped está alto y hay que podar algunas ramas de los árboles, deberías hacerlo hoy"... ¡Al carajo, casi me desmayo de la impresión!... ¡Parece que todos en mi familia están confabulados para hacerme trabajar hoy!... ¿Acaso no se percatan que estamos en medio de un condenado "domo de calor"?.

Obviously, I limited myself to "just thinking" these things, because even at 52 years old, answering my mother in an abrupt way would have "painful" consequences... I remember that a couple of years ago we were having breakfast together and unconsciously a swear word escaped me while we were talking, then, in some magical way "my mouth appeared placed practically under my right ear" 😂😂😂... She had slapped me at such a speed, that I couldn't even make a defensive movement!... Then I burst out laughing, for if there is anyone I can put up with anything, it is my mother...But she is undoubtedly a "retired teacher" to watch out for! 😂

Obviamente, me limité a "tan solo pensar" esas cosas, pues aún a mis 52 años, contestar de manera abrupta a mi madre tendría consecuencias digamos "dolorosas"... Recuerdo que hace un par de años atrás estábamos desayunando juntos e inconscientemente se me escapó una palabrota mientras conversábamos, entonces, de alguna manera mágica "mi boca apareció colocada prácticamente debajo de mi oreja derecha" 😂😂😂... ¡Me había abofeteado a una velocidad tal, que ni siquiera pude hacer un movimiento defensivo!... Entonces me eché a reír, pues si hay alguien a quien puedo soportarle cualquier cosa, es a mi madre...¡Pero indudablemente ella es una "profesora retirada" a la que hay que tenerle cuidado! 😂...

In response to my mother I just nodded and said: "Yes, maybe I will do it today or maybe tomorrow", then I accompanied her while she ate her breakfast and then I went back to my house, went into my room, put on my old tennis shoes and an equally old cap, hung up my camera and went out to the street and towards the small river which runs along the western border of the town... I wasn't going to stay there at home at the mercy of "all those people scheduling chores for me! 😂... And when I arrived at the bank of the small stream, I dedicated myself to take pictures in its waters, which were isolated from the sunlight thanks to the big trees growing on its banks... A few minutes later my cell phone began to ring, I took it out of my pocket and saw that it was a video call from my eldest son who lives in Bogotá (Colombia)... I pressed the icon to answer him and immediately said: "And what do you want, do you need me to go paint your apartment or wash your car?... 😂😂😂 Then he said: "Fuck, the heat is making you crazier than you already are" and cut the communication...😂

En respuesta a mi madre tan solo asentí y dije: "Sí, quizás lo haga hoy o quizás mañana", entonces la acompañé mientras tomaba su desayuno y luego retorné a mi casa, entré a mi habitación, calcé mis viejos tenis y una gorra igual de vieja, colgué mi cámara y salí despachado hacia la calle y rumbo al pequeño río el cual corre a lo largo del limite oeste del pueblo... ¡No iba a quedarme allí en casa a merced de "toda esa gente programando tareas para mí! 😂... Y cuando llegué a la orilla del pequeño riachuelo, me dediqué a hacer fotografías en sus aguas, las cuales estaban aisladas de la luz solar gracias a los grandes árboles que crecen en sus orillas... Pocos minutos después mi móvil comenzó a sonar,lo saqué de mi bolsillo y vi que se trataba de una vídeo llamada de mi hijo mayor el cual vive en Bogotá (Colombia)... Pulsé el icono para contestarle y de inmediato le dije: ¿Y a tu que quieres, acaso necesitas que vaya a pintar tu apartamento o a lavar tu auto?... 😂😂😂 Entonces él dijo: "Carajo, el calor te está volviendo más loco de lo que ya eres" y cortó la comunicación... 😂

And so this is the story of how I ended up taking pictures under the shade of trees on the banks of a river west of my town, and turning them into my entry for today's #monomad challenge!!!.

Y entonces esta es la historia de como terminé haciendo fotografías bajo la sombra de los árboles en las orillas de un río al Oeste de mi pueblo, para luego convertirlas en mi entrada para el reto #monomad de hoy!.
