Until the end of the 20th century a huge portion of flat land and mountains to the northeast of the Montalbán valley belonged to the so-called “Hacienda Montero”, but over the years much of that property was divided and transformed into a group of smaller properties belonging to different owners. Also, the old roads that were backing up the original hacienda were widened and transformed into wider roads mostly for agricultural use. Through these roads you can reach different places of interest in the surroundings of the town, the farthest point that can be reached is the hill “Marquero” about 8 kilometers from the central part of the town. But these roads are also an excellent option to walk in the vicinity and enjoy the rural landscape which always offers excellent views and at the same time the sensation of seeing a little of what daily life was like in these places some decades ago. This is a place I have known since I was quite young and I can assure you that little has changed since then.... I invite you then to follow along in this publication and get to know “La Monterosa” through my photos and my written lines...

Hasta finales del siglo XX una enorme porción de tierras planas y montañas al noreste del valle de Montalbán pertenecía a la denominada "Hacienda Montero", pero con el paso de los años gran parte de esa propiedad se fraccionó y se fue transformando en un conjunto de propiedades más pequeñas pertenecientes a diferentes dueños. También los antiguos caminos que atrasaban la hacienda original fueron ampliados y se transformaron en vías más amplias destinadas al uso agrícola en su mayoría. A través de estos caminos se puede llegar a diferentes lugares de interés en los alrededores del pueblo, el punto más alejado al cual se puede llegar es el cerro "Marquero" a unos 8 kilómetros del casco central del pueblo. Pero estos caminos también son una excelente opción para recorrerlos en las cercanías y disfrutar del paisaje rural el cual siempre ofrece vistas excelentes al mismo tiempo que la sensación de estar mirando un poco como era la la vida cotidiana en estos lugares hace algunas décadas atrás. Este es un lugar el cual conozco desde que era bastante joven y puedo asegurar que ha cambiado poco desde entonces... Les invito entonces a seguir adelante en esta publicación y conocer "La Monterosa" a través de mis fotos y mis líneas escritas...

You get here by walking north from the town's Central Plaza (Plaza Bolivar) along Carabobo Street, which ends directly at the beginning of the wide dirt road that crosses the valley of “La Monterosa” from one end to the other. The landscape is basically rural, as most of this land is being used for cattle raising, pasture and other related crops. The fact of being in the middle of the dry season makes the color scheme of the landscape go beyond the monotonous greens of the rainy season. Then a universe of ocher, yellow, blue and white tones intertwine to give the observer interesting and bucolic visions... The best time to visit this place is shortly after sunrise, with enough light to see the road well and at the same time take advantage of the favors of the golden hour, which is especially good for taking pictures as I like.

Se llega aquí caminando hacia el Norte de la Plaza Central (Plaza Bolívar del pueblo por la Calle Carabobo, la cual termina directamente en donde inicia el amplio camino de tierra el cual atraviesa de punta a punta el valle de "La Monterosa". El paisaje es básicamente rural, pues la mayoría de estas tierras están siendo usadas para la cría de ganado, siembra de pasto y otros cultivos afines. El hecho de estar en plena temporada seca hace que el esquema de colores del paisaje vaya más allá de los monótonos verdes de cuando es temporada de lluvia. Entonces un universo de tonos ocres, amarillos, azules y blancos se entrelazan para regalar al observador visiones interesantes y bucólicas... La mejor hora para visitar este lugar es poco después del amanecer, con la luz suficiente para ver bien el camino y al mismo tiempo aprovechar los favores de la hora dorada, lo cual es especialmente bueno para hacer fotografías tal como a mi me gusta.

Despite being mostly private land, most of the gates are not padlocked and you can pass through without any problems. The people here are used to giving right of way to strangers and locals alike, since these lands were divided more or less anarchically and the roads ended up being practically shared. Besides, the local people like to talk and as soon as you greet them they stop to talk about the weather, the landscape, their animals or whatever comes to mind... This allows you to move freely around the place without any inconvenience and you can take pictures from many different angles. You just have to be careful with some bulls that may be in a bad mood or with some dogs belonging to houses in the area which can become aggressive if you get too close... By the way, in this visit to this place I noticed the presence of several species of birds in the fields, so next time maybe I will bring a more powerful lens than my modest 18-200mm zoom which I was carrying that day...

A pesar de tratarse de terrenos privados en su mayoría, la mayoría de los portales no tienen candadnos y se puede pasar sin problemas. Las personas aquí suelen estar acostumbradas a brindar derecho de paso a propios y extraños, pues estas tierras fueron divididas de manera más o menos anárquica y los caminos terminaron siendo prácticamente de uso compartido. Además, a las personas del lugar le gusta hablar y apenas uno les saluda se detienen a conversar sobre el clima, acerca del paisaje, acerca de sus animales o de cualquier cosa que les venga a la mente... Esto permite que uno se desplace con cierta libertad por el lugar sin inconvenientes y se puedan hacer fotografías desde ángulos muy diversos. Solo hay que tener cuidado con algún toro que pueda estar de mal humor o con algunos perros pertenecientes a casas de la zona los cuales pueden ponerse agresivo si uno se acerca demasiado... Por cierto, en esta visita a este lugar me percaté de la presencia de varias especies de aves en los campos, así que la próxima vez quizás traiga un lente más potente que mi modesto zoom 18-200mm el cual llevaba ese día...

I love to see tractors preparing the land for crops, I like to watch them turn and turn making furrows, I like to watch the birds flying behind their trail to eat insects, I like to watch the tractors especially in dry season and appreciate the dust that rises in their path, it is the kind of rural scenes that captivates me, so it is not surprising that this day I spent almost an hour taking pictures of this old tractor going back and forth across the plain where in the future grass will be planted. The people here are fortunate to have rivers nearby and also deep wells to draw water from, so they can take advantage of the dry months to cultivate roubles with controlled humidity and avoid the risk of excess humidity during the rainy season.... I have always thought that places like this one in Montalbán should be exploited as points of something that I would call “Agricultural Tourism” because I know that many people in remote places like to immerse themselves in this type of rural environment. Unfortunately, the projects with intentions of projecting the municipality as a touristic place, have never paid off as expected.

Yo amo ver tractores preparando la tierra para los cultivos, me gusta verlos girar y girar haciendo surcos, me gusta mirar las aves volando detrás de su rastro para comer insectos, me guata mirar los tractores en especial en temporada seca y apreciar el polvo que se levanta a su paso, es es el tipo de escenas rurales que me cautiva, así que no es de extrañar que ese día estuviese casi una hora haciendo fotografías de este viejo tractor yendo y viniendo por la planicie en donde a futuro se sembrará pasto. Las personas aquí tienen la fortuna de tener ríos cerca y también pozos profundos de donde extraer agua, así que pueden aprovechar los meses secos para cultivar rublos con humedad controlada y evitar los riesgo de excesos de humedad durante la temporada de lluvias... Siempre he pensado que lugares como este en Montalbán deberían ser explotados como puntos de algo que yo llamaría "Turismo agrícola" pues se que muchas personas en sitios alejadas, gustan de sumergirse en este tipo de ambientes rurales. Lamentablemente, los proyectos con intenciones de proyectar el municipio como un lugar turístico, nunca han rendido frutos según lo esperado.

After forcing myself to “stop watching the tractor making furrows” (oh my, sometimes I tend to be like a child) I drove away from the main road down a narrow path where I happened to run into an old friend of my father, Mr. Victor, who has a small property here... Victor was on his way to town to do some shopping, but after the “almost obligatory” talk about the weather, the crops and the cattle, plus a couple of anecdotes he had with my father, Victor told me that right next to his property (about 800 meters from where we were) there is a lot with a ruined building that has a “For Sale” sign painted on the wall, and he told me that behind that lot there is a small lagoon covered with aquatic plants from whose edge you can see the mountains very well and you can take nice pictures... I thanked him for the tip and continued on my way to that place!....

Después de obligarme a mi mismo a "dejar de ver el tractor haciendo surcos" (oh cielos, a veces suelo ser como un niño) me alejé del camino principal por un camino angosto en donde casualmente me encontré con un antiguo amigo de mi padre, el Sr. Víctor, quien tiene una pequeña propiedad aquí... Víctor se dirigía al pueblo a hacer unas compras, pero después de la "casi obligatoria" charla sobre el clima, las siembras y el ganado, además de un par de anécdotas vividas con mi padre, Víctor me dijo que justo al lado de su propiedad (a unos 800 metros de donde estábamos) hay un lote con una construcción en ruinas que tiene un letrero de "Se vende" pintado en la pared, y me dijo que detrás de ese lote hay una pequeña laguna cubierta de plantas acuáticas desde cuyo borde se aprecian muy bien las montañas y se pueden hacer fotos lindas... ¡Le agradecí por el dato y seguí mi camino hacia ese lugar!...

I arrived at the place suggested by Victor and climbed up to the edge of the lagoon. Truly the view of the nearby mountains is beautiful and I imagine this is a place that would be good to visit on a foggy morning to do some very interesting photographic work. Again I saw some nice birds, I think next time I will bring my trusty old 300mm lens with me so I can make a more accurate bird record.

Llegué al lugar sugerido por Víctor y subí hasta el borde de la laguna. En verdad la visión de las montañas cercanas es hermosa y me imagino que este es un lugar el cual sería bueno visitar en una mañana con niebla para hacer un trabajo fotográfico muy interesante. Otra vez observé algunas lindas aves, creo que la próxima vez traeré conmigo mi viejo y confiable lente de 300mm y así poder hacer un registro de aves más preciso.

After visiting the small lagoon and enjoying the view of the mountains, I decided to start my way back home, but when I got back on the road, I noticed several huge “bucare” trees full of orange flowers nearby... And if there is something I like almost as much as tractors, it is bucares!... So I took the opportunity to spend some time under those trees and take some pictures...

Después de visitar la pequeña laguna y disfrutar de la vista de las montañas, decidí emprender el regreso a casa, pero al salir de nuevo al camino me percaté de la presencia cercana de varios enormes árboles de "bucare" repletos de flores anaranjadas... ¡Y si hay algo que me guste casi tanto como los tractores, son los bucares!... Así que aproveché para estar un rato bajo esos árboles y hacer algunas fotos...

The bucares are quite large trees, it is common to see individuals that exceed 30m in height. But besides their size, the most charming thing about the bucares is their wonderful habit of losing all their foliage with the arrival of the dry season and covering their branches with lots of orange flowers ... It is wonderful to look at them from afar as well as being close to or under them!....

Los bucares son árboles bastante grandes, es frecuente ver individuos que sobrepasan los 30m de altura. Pero además de su tamaño, lo más encantador que tienen los bucares es su maravillosa costumbre de perder todo su follaje con la llegada de la temporada seca y cubrir sus ramas con gran cantidad de flores anaranjadas... ¡Es maravilloso mirarlos tanto de lejos como estando cerca o debajo de ellos!...

I made my way back quite fast, as it was almost noon and the ambient temperature was close to 34°C (90°F). However, as always in this place, there were a lot of interesting things happening around... I hope you liked this tour, see you soon again here on #Hive with more places to visit... 😉
